Stella Frost had won all her 3 heats for Doody Townley , and started off 24yards , so still deserved the win anyway . ImTheMightyQuinn promoted at Auckland 2011 ( Interdominion was supposed to be run at Addington , but there was damage from the horrid earthquake they had that year) Smokin Up with Lance Justice returning a positive. and 2021 Boncel Benjamin , nearly the rank outsider of the field with his junior driver and mug 'learner trainer' Grimson stole the race after Expensive Ego wandered around like a Sea-sick sailor to stop Benjamin getting past him up the Menangle straight 🤣. That 2021 Interdom Grand final had Luke McCarthy with a strong hand . Training Expensive Ego and also these 3 stars > He steered the fav 'King of Swing' into 5th, 'Alta Orlando' ran 3rd for his Nz owners( which include John and Robert Dunn ) and 'Spirit of St Louis' ran 8th for his whole swag of Kiwi and Aussie owners. This year next month (heats are in 2 weeks time) Luke will try and defend the Title of Interdominion Champion he DID win last year with DON HUGO at Menangle. and for his NZ owners he has BEACH BALL to try and win something with too. Leap To Fame will Thwart that attempt , as will be Albion Park Grand Final this year, but good luck running 2nd Luke !! 😎 Ranga NOT running 2nd at BOAY yet anyway 🏆 6 Points for your correct 6 horses today Ranga. nice work . on the money 😉 Quote

Auckland 2019 was only one past 14 years. Ranga has made a great list of drivers 🏆 *** so I will try and find a horse for them to drive in a Grand Final at Auckland 👍😁 Scott Phelan : On The Cards David Butcher : Triple Eight (of course DB won an Auckland Grand Final with ELSU once.) Tony Herlihy : Sicario or Pembrook Benny ( and 2nd with Christopher Vance for Roy in the photo below ) Matty White : not sure Todd Mitchell : Just an Excuse Mark Purdon : has won the Interdominion (with Smolda and Lazarus at Perth) and Mark Hanover at AKLD. Zac Butcher : Mach Shard a 2nd Placegetter. Morrie McKendry : A G's White Socks Peter Ferguson : not sure Andrew Neal : Barry Purdon : would of been in a fair few Robert Dunn : Mango : Alta Serena for owner John Green and the Hughes training team Tony Shaw : not sure won here in Brisvegas with Yulestar 2001. an amazing Victory. Scott Phelan got a place on HolmesDG Tony Herlihy 2nds on Chokin and Christopher Vance and 4 x Trotting Finals wins Peter Ferguson Kates First David Butcher Win and 4th with Elsu ,also drove Changeover 4th ,Winforu 2nd Brabham 5th and Gaellic Skipper. Morrie Mack Kylies hero and some good Trots drives ,David Moss ,Sovereignty ,Mountain Gold BPurdon several drives won Trots with Night Allowance Mango drove Franco Ice and Luxury Liner Mattie White Lombo Navigator Mark Purdon...legend ...I think 3 Pacing , 4 x Trots Great memories....Maybe NZ would have more multiple winners with mobile starts and without the 24 yard handicaps etc 1 Quote

Bingo Gamma ! I felt so pleased that Jim Cole won with Clouding Over on Friday night ! His wife there as usual and co-owners ! Cos of the horses low rating it often number 1 so gets stuck on the rails and battles away. Jim often drives her...53 starts ,1 x win and 14 places. Last few starts Morrie Mack back on and drawn 2 it got in the running line and out in middle of track in straight. Perfect drive for win 2. Back in a day I used to follow a few Cole trotters including Dionne Hanover who led to turn over 2200 and battled away. I always throw Clouding Over into my trifecta for place. A friend told me he liked it on Friday ,before the race, I smiled but inwardly I thought.....well NO chance of winning ,maybe 3rd or 4th. 1 Quote

Are you talking about Cardigan Bays driver Peter Wolfenden. Also won at Addington when Rondel [ trainer Peter Young] won one of the most sedate races ever ! The One and Only . the late great Mr Peter Wolfenden MBE. and yes wins with Cardy and Rondel . An Interdominion , National , and world Champion Hero , was Cardigan Bay . and still NZ's best ever ? Here's a story about him , some might know , but shows how LUCK is important with horse racing too. 1962 and Cardigan Bay having set the NZ record of 10 straight wins , including the NZ FFA and Auckland Cup , was set on the Long journey to Perth for the Interdominion. Too far for Wolfie to go while working his AKLD team , so the horses was untrusted to a good Sydney horseman in Bill Wilkins. Bill steered Cardigan Bay to impressive Heat wins for the first 2 rounds off his 12 yard handicap. But DISASter struck. A stupid Aus stable hand jogging him during the week before the 3rd round of heats got himself tipped out of the cart and Cardy bolted and fell heavily on cement 😭. dislocating a hip and gouging his legs. so badly , they were gunna shoot him . At the last minute a local trainer Ted Grieg said he would 'Suspend' Cardy in a stall for a month and nurse him to recovery. with the aide of his teen stable hand named Merv Butterworth !! the future owner of double NZ CUP winner Copy That . on ya Merv !! their efforts help Cardy to repair . after 4 months he went home to NZ. (footnote that Interdominion was clean swept by JAMES SCOTT (NSW) who ran track records and won all 3 Heats and Grand Final off the backmark of 24yards. so a very well deserved win anyway for trainer/driver Perc Hall) 1963 and Cardigan Bay Wolfie off the scene himself for 4 months after a savage kick to the face that needed surgery earlier in the year, but got Cardy back on track in the Spring and ran 5th to LORDSHIP in a soggy NZ Cup. Wolfie determined his star should avenge his Bad-Luck in Perth the year before and go to Adelaide for the Interdominion. This time he had to start off 24yards , through the heats and Final on a 550m circumference track. no mean feat. But Wolfie is a Gun and steers Cardy around the field to impressively win his First 2 rounds of heats. In the first heat Cardy had so narrowly dodged a 3 horse fall that his wheel had 8 broken spokes and broken stay. Wolfie had avoided tragedy by millimetres , and won the Heat with the badly buckled wheel in an amazing stroke of good fortune. BUT DISASter struck again. A huge crash in the 3rd round heat that Cardy couldn't dodge this time, saw Cardy belting around with a smashed Sulky and everyone held their breathe, knowing what happened in Perth the year before. Some spectators caught the champ though and as Wolfie assessed him soon after was delighted to find him virtually unscathed somehow. wow that must of been heart-stopping stuff for a moment. In the Grand Final , Disaster struck . 🙄 but this time 4 of his rivals were put out of the race in a huge crash. Wolfie missed it and had worked forward 3 wide earlier to get a sit near the leaders in his usual amazing driving ability, and in the home straight Wolfie Drove Extremely HArd for him, overhauled felow NZ er Waitaki Hanover ( Doody Townley) who had led them up in the Grand Final. Doody had won the South Australia Derby with his other horse (TACTILE) as well , to have a great carnival. So it was the UPS and the DOWNS for Wolfie and Cardy . But Champions ALways !!!! and they got the job done. Thanks for reading ! 1 Quote
TAB For Ever Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago I read it Gamma and I spot the error to prove it...Lordship won the NZ Cup in 1962 and 1966...Cardy won it in 1963. You mention the good horse Waitaki Hanover which for some seasons was trained by Wolfie also. In later years Wolfie trained a brilliant Victor Supreme who ran 2nd in Interdom Final to Golden Reign [ A ]. But both Victorv Supreme and the 3rd horse were later disqualified after positive swabs. Wolfies son Glen drove VS. Then later on I was excited to join a big synd in a Wolie trained horse. Peter won a couple of races on this promising horse named after an Olympic Gold Medalist but thru unsoundness it was moved to Chief Stipe Gale .It won 3 x races quite quickly then entered in Interdom as a 6 win horse. It ran mid field driven by Nicole Molander. Nicole had driven a trotter Lanson to 4th in Trotters final the year before then the next year won a consolation race on Lanson. The year Rondel scored its upset win over the favourite Sapling , the sedate pacers final was upstaged at Addington by No Response's remarkable finish to win the Trotters final. Rondel was the mingling of the owners names. Quote
TAB For Ever Posted 12 hours ago Posted 12 hours ago Golden Reigns win in 1995 was with Chris Alford as driver...he recently drove our young trotter in Auckland....I told him ,do your best Aussie and he smiled !! I guess you had to be there ! the third horse ,along with VS [a mare] disqulified later was Young Mister Charles.Chokin was put up to 2nd { AGH] Victor Supreme was a good breeder with some good winner like the Stephen Reid pair Victors Delight and Utmost Delight [ Jewels winner].Anothe handy winner was Supremacy which after being a shy breeder has had two recent winners at Auckland including 2yr old Buddy Guy. The 19995 Final had some top horses in it incl Blossom Lady , BeeBee Cee and Master Musician. Also a neighbour of ours ,real small time breeder Alex McDonald who trained Lento a handy mare. Alex didnt train many ,he used to play rugby on wing for Taieri. Another wing on same road was Sid Brown who played for Taieri and Otago. He owned Foreal an Interdom contender at some stage plus Field Marshall a top horse. Sid currently has Sparkle running around Auckland. He and his Dad Jim sold the Pie and Chips at the 1965 Interdoms at Forbury. How time flies...thats 60years ago ! 1 Quote

Then Cardigan Bay won the Interdominion also in the 62-63 season in the early months of 1963 in Australia. THEN, Later that year Cardigan Bay won his NZ Cup (off an incredible 54 yards handicap) also in 1963 so NO error. Gammalite Posted 5 hours ago Author Posted 5 hours ago Cardigan Bay , couldn't defend his hard -earned Interdominion Title with Victory unfortunately. In the next series also run on a very small track at the Melbourne Showgrounds 1964 . The Interdominion Council handicapped him out of it on a very imposing 48yards 🙄. 2 local front markers ran the Quinella in the Grand Final . with NZ grabbing 3rd with TACTILE (the prolific Derby winner from the previous season ) now trained and driven by gun kiwi Bob Cameron . Tactile started off 12 yards . 5th in Melbourne was the Champion NZ mare ROBIN DUNDEE off 12 yards ( who went on to Dead-heat win the following season at Forbury Park in Dunedin for Doody Townley. and Cardigan Bay finished a fairly close 6th . the 3 great NZ horses winning a heat each but beaten by the Handicaps in the Grand Final behind winner 'Minuteman' off the front. Wolfie had waited for Robin Dundee to Cart him up into the race , but she had suffered a bone injury during the running so Townley couldn't get her to run up to her very best. and Cardy got held up.
