billy connolly Posted Friday at 02:17 AM Posted Friday at 02:17 AM Good eulogy from Bellew. Imagine if the Brothers had have crossed Zabeel with those good race mares, progeny could've been anything. Quote

Bred and trained many terrific horses. They did use several champion NZ sires such as Savabeel , Mellay ,Gatekeeper , O'Reilly ,Noble Bijou ,plus Grosvenor [son of Sir Tristram] and Flying Spur. They didn't go to mug sires ! 1 Quote

They didn't go to mug sires ! Yes, but they wouldn't use Zabeel because they reckoned he was too expensive (200k from memory) at the time. They tried the Star Kingdom line of sprinting stallions at a time when Zabeel was at his peak which weakened their breed somewhat in my view. Grosvenor was from the Sir Ivor/Sir Tristram sire line as was Zabeel but Zabeel had the prepotent maternal sire line of Northern Dancer/Nureyev. These bloodlines coupled with the fact that Zabeel wasn't over-raced would've further strengthened the Dennis breed IMO, but I'm no breeding buff. Quote
