PARADISE WOODS (m, 5, Union Rags–Wild Forest, by Forest Wildcat), who had gone winless since September 2017, proved herself all over again with a tour de force victory in the GII Santa Margarita S. Saturday at Santa Anita. Last entering the winner’s circle after a 5 1/2-length conquest of the GI Zenyatta S. as a sophomore, she was third in that year’s GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff and a close second in the GI La Brea S. She hadn’t come close in her next four outings, but showed some signs of life when third at 14-1 in the GI Beholder Mile S. last out here Mar. 30. Breaking a bit outwardly as the 3-5 chalk in this spot, the bay was kept well off the rail by Mike Smith as she tracked from second through splits of :23.37 and :47.35. Taking charge in hand three furlongs out, the only question soon became how far, and she cantered in nine lengths to the good of La Force (Ger) (Power {GB}) while well in hand. The final running time was 1:51.95. Lifetime Record: GISW, 14-4-2-3, $945,890. O-Wygod, Wygod or Sarkowsky; B-Herman Sarkowsky (KY); T-John Shirreffs.
