Tim Layden, an award-winning sports journalist who was a senior writer for 25 years with Sports Illustrated, has signed an exclusive agreement with NBC Sports Group to produce longform articles, major-event stories and columns, as well as video work for NBC Sports’ television and digital platforms. His work will build upon his previous work with NBC Sports, which includes video essays that have aired during marquee NBC Sports events like the GI Kentucky Derby, Breeders’ Cup, Olympic sports, the NFL, NHL and NASCAR. His first article, covering life after football for recently retired NFL players, is available at www.NBCSports.com.

“It’s been so rewarding to work with the incredible NBC Sports team on television essays for the past two years,” Layden said in a statement. “This is a terrific opportunity to expand my role with NBC Sports to include the type of writing and journalism that I’ve worked on for my entire career, and to extend it across the entire breadth of NBC Sports’ unparalleled multi-platform portfolio.”

During his tenure at Sports Illustrated, Layden covered 14 Olympic Games, 10 NCAA Final Fours, and three Super Bowls. His beat also included horse racing, track and field, swimming, alpine skiing and producing many longform features. Prior to Sports Illustrated, Layden worded at the Schenectady Gazette (1978-1986), Albany Times Union (1986-1988), and Newsday (1988-1994).
