Quality mare Consensus has reached the end of her 2017-18 campaign.

Quality mare Consensus has reached the end of her 2017-18 campaign.

Consensus has been withdrawn from Saturday’s Gr. 1 Doomben Cup and is on her way home for a winter break.

The Postponed mare performed with merit in Sydney in the autumn, finishing fourth in the Gr. 1 Ranvet Stakes and sixth behind Winx in the A$4 million Gr. 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes. She was a last-start eighth in the Gr. 2 Hollindale Stakes on the Gold Coast.

“She ran really well in her two races in Sydney, but we were just a bit disappointed with the run on the Gold Coast,” trainer Stephen McKee told www.theinformant.co.nz.

“She wasn’t far away from them (4.45 lengths from the winner), but it was just a bit below her best. So she won't be running on Saturday and she’ll come home for a spell now. She’s done well in this campaign.”

The winner of the 2016 Zabeel Classic, Consensus didn’t win a race this season but finished second on three occasions including the Gr. 1 Captain Cook Stakes and Haunui Farm WFA. She also ran fourth in the Ranvet, the Zabeel Classic and the Gr. 3 OMF Stakes. Her 10-start campaign netted more than $160,000 in prize-money for her connections.

Lovely mare. Not a Winx but we'd all love to have just one like that.

Yes she wasn't quite a match for Winx but with an ounce of better fortune we might have doubled or quadrupled our stake in the QEII.  Overall a frustrating year however two G1 placings and $160,000 in stakes but no wins.  As a seven year old next year it will be interesting to see if she retains her enthusiasm.  One thing she does share with Winx is age and seven year old mares at the top level are unusual and have the potential to go off racing a bit.  I am sure Mr Waller will be eagle eyed watching for signs.  I guess his dread would be for her too be badly beaten(or beaten at all) prior to signing off.  The pressure must be unbelievable.

Good luck for next season Reefton,

Thanks.  Appreciate the good wishes. Bloody hard to get a good horse but it spoils you too in that the others you have shares in end up with unrealistic expectations(which they invariably do not fulfill)

I reckon it is the same effect in NZ sport.  Because we have the All Blacks booting everyone's a#*e when the netballers or league or whatever don't do so well we get pretty down on them.
