Chief Stipe
If you can tolerate the American Ads the live broadcast on ESPN is a good watch.
Rowley Mile
It was hard to watch, the weather saw to that, but what a lovely horse the winner is, I feel he won't get 2400, they should stop him now, he's the best 3yo in the States.......the jocks colours says it all really, he rode to the conditions...... Chief Stipe
I think he will get a mile and a half. Sitting one out and going head to head for most of the race with a very good horse and still holding the others out without giving ground when they loomed.....a tough horse. He might need a softer run with a sit for the Belmont. He got neither in the Kentucky Derby nor the Preakness.
Ashoka
Rowley Mile and Chief Stipe, Am I right in thinking that Mike Smith still had a handful of horse as they went to the line? I could not see how hard Justify was ridden in seeing off Good Magic, but my immediate thoughts on seeing the final metres was that the jockey had "protected" his horse at the finish. Has the previous race record of this horse shown that he can "settle" in the running or does he always run as a seeming "adrenaline junkie"? I would appreciate your opinions on my comments. Thank you. Ashoka
Chief Stipe
From what I have seen of his previous races is he does settle. He is very relaxed pre-race as well. He won his first race over 1400m in 1:21 and change and seemed to do it on his ear. Has a very high cruising speed.
Rowley Mile
I don't think he had that much left to be honest, his opposition was moderate, in the Belmont they seem to produce a staying type from the wings so to speak.....maybe wrong, and hope in some ways that's the case as a triple crown means so much.....let's see? curious
Can't win the Belmont IMO.

curious
Because I think his best performances are at 7-9f and deteriorate the further he goes. 1 1/2 miles depending on the competition that actually lines up is probably beyond him at this level. Chief Stipe
https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/227642/justify-bright-after-preakness-victory It is possible that he still isn't as fit as he could be. Mainly speed on the sire side but there is staying blood on his dam side.
Ashoka
Chief Stipe, I think that it is entirely possible. I stand by my opinion that Mike Smith did not fully extend Justify in winning the Preakness Stakes. I ask that anyone who thinks that I am incorrect on this matter, to have a look at the photograph of the finish and to note the jockey's body position, particularly the positioning of his hands, as they cross the line. Doubters...you have your instructions. I anticipate an evisceration (mine). Cheers. Ashoka
Chief Stipe
My view is that any horse that can sit outside another for so long and still hold on plus pick himself up again when others come at him is a tough horse. He ran 1:55.9 for the 1900m on a soft sloppy track doing all the work. The race record is 1:53 held by Secretariat (there is some of his blood in Justify). So 1900m equates to a 2:02 2000m which would win most Cox plates. Now there are differing opinions but some say the Preakness is the hardest to win as there is only two weeks between it and the Kentucky Derby. There is 3 weeks to the Derby. Also if you look at the Kentucky Derby the opening sectionals on a sloppy track were 22 and 45 seconds which are phenomenal sectionals. Justify again raced one out head to head with the leader. Left them at the turn and the rest were floundering. Sure the final time was slow at 2:04 but comparative with other Derby wins on a sloppy track. If you look closely he isn't on a tight reign outside the leader showing he relaxes great. He's a big horse too weighing in at 575kg - 50kg's more than American Pharoah. I wouldn't be surprised if he runs better on a firmer track.
Sir Galivant
Win or not JUSTIFY has given us a reason to watch another TRIPLE CROWN attempt. Chief Stipe I agree I can see him being a better horse on the firmer ground .... do you know when the BELMONT FIELD is out ?
Ashoka
Chief Stipe, "He won his first race over 1400m in 1:21 and change and seemed to do it on his ear." Presumably, this was on a firm track. If it wasn't, then this conversation is no longer moot. I know...I am really setting myself up to get a good kicking in three week's time...and for no discernable reason. This is what horse racing does to me...and I wouldn't have it any other way. Cheers. Ashoka

Ashoka Ashoka, I agree, and although I'm used to a good kicking, I base my opinion on sectionals, the final sectionals to be exact, I think the last 400 of one of his opponents will be quicker, and that horse too will be better suited to a fast track and not a sloppy....bring it on, and I'll share my liniment with you if we get it wrong!
