Greyhound racing to continue in Victoria

Greyhound Racing Victoria CEO Alan Clayton said today that GRV, Greyhound Clubs Victoria and all 13 race clubs were committed to continuing with race meetings for the foreseeable future.

Mr Clayton said GRV’s decision to continue racing – with attendance restricted at race meetings to licensed trainers (or trainers’ representatives) with runners engaged, catchers and essential staff – had the support of Government and was in line with advice from the Chief Health Officer.

“We have taken on board advice around curbing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting the wellbeing of industry staff and participants and while race meetings will be off limits to the general public, our racing will continue,” Mr Clayton said.

“GRV and our clubs are taking the matter seriously and are consulting on a daily basis as more information and medical advice is received.”

Mr Clayton said racing would continue as scheduled at this point with reviews of the racing calendar taking place regularly as part of the ongoing management of the industry.

However, all off track entertainment has been cancelled.

“Our priority is the health and wellbeing of our participants and staff and the welfare of our dogs,” Mr Clayton said.

“As long as we comply with the Chief Health Officer’s advice and directions, and our dogs are fit and healthy, then we will continue to hold race meetings and give our participants the opportunity to earn a living.”
