TOM’S D’ETAT (h, 7, Smart Strike-Julia Tuttle, by Giant’s Causeway), sent off 4-5 favorite in his 2020 debut, swept to the front late to hand fellow Grade I- winner Improbable (City Zip) a 3/4-length defeat in Saturday’s Oaklawn Mile S. at Oaklawn. Far back early as Pioneer Spirit (Malibu Moon) rolled through opening fractions of :22.90 and :46.09, Tom’s d’Etat launched his bid exiting the backstretch and was in high gear while several paths wide turning for home. In full flight late, last fall’s GI Clark winner collared Improbable in the final strides to collect his first victory of the season. Final time for the eight-furlong test was 1:35.83. Lifetime Record: 17-10-2-1, $1,326,572. O-GMB Racing; B-SF Bloodstock LLC (KY); T-Al Stall Jr.
