Is this kind of pointless? 

 

- Wouldn't the winner of an Open handicap be highly likely to walk into a Wellington Cup field in NZ  given the status of the sport in NZ/dearth of stayers/demotion of race status at the moment?

- Is there that many horses that miss out on a start in the Wellington Cup at any rate?

- Not to mention that NZTR have done their darnedest to kill Country racing and thus cups thinning out the pool for such a promo.

Unfortunately the Wgtn cup is just another inflated open handicap that is not worth 250k , and i grew up on the wgtn cups . Don't see what it will achieve , can't recall any horses that have missed a start that were up and coming stars . Again just a sad indictment of the state of NZ's staying ranks .

Also as you say now trying to promote country racing whilst slowly whittling away at their legs , They haven't got a clue which direction they are going in , far less which direction they want to go .
