Roman
How do they determine who broodmare of the year is for Pacers and trotters? Is it based on progeny wins for the season? Or money? Or just if they have one star racehorse they win it? In my opinion it should be based on how many of their progeny win in a season

Of people putting forward who they thought was the best and the majority of votes was the winner for each section. Not sure if. this is the way it is decided still, but probably the best way as always subjective and could be seen to be biased otherwise. Midfrew
I sat on this committee for a decade. Criteria was virtually non-existent. Generally, in times past the Cup or Dominion winner dam had an inside run. There was only one award. Now one for each gait. These days is more about impact/quality in the season from the dam/her family, rather than volume of wins. You can see the 2020/21 season nominees on page 83 of The Breeders Sept 21 Breeding Matters, www.thebreeders.co.nz , the middle Breeding Matters on the website front page. Career broodmare Excellence is recognised annually by The Breeders with this year's winners at pages 88 (Spendid Dreams) and 89 (Chiola's Lass) of the January 22 Breeding Matters also on the website, left-hand link, also with the Flowpaper page reader.
