Journalists Wandering Eyes Posted April 20, 2022 Journalists Share Posted April 20, 2022 Hard-knocking graded winner Midnight Bourbon (Midnight Lute–Catch the Moon, by Malibu Moon) died suddenly Sunday at Churchill Downs. The 4-year-old died from an “acute gastrointestinal situation,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. The story was first reported by the Daily Racing Form. The colt breezed earlier that morning, covering five furlongs in 1:01.20, and became ill shortly after. “Just a horrible loss to the barn,” Asmussen told the TDN. “A lot of people loved this horse, and rightfully so.” A half-brother to GISW Girvin, Midnight Bourbon was purchased by Winchell Thoroughbreds for $525,000 at Keeneland September. His lone graded win came in last year's GIII Lecomte S., but he has hit the board in 10 other graded events, including runner-up efforts in the GI Preakness S. and GI Pennsylvania Derby last year. The bay was last seen finishing fifth in the G1 Dubai World Cup Mar. 26. His lifetime record stood at 16-2-6-5 with earnings of $3,557,970.
