Jackfrost's DISGRACEFUL WHIPPING!!!

I agree Ashoka, back in the 80's before I trained at Flemington, I enjoyed a business relationship with the late, great Roy Higgins. Now Roy was not shy when using the persuader however Roy told me, [and I never forgot] he didn't use the whip if he had led and felt his horse was a beaten force, he used the whip sparingly anyway as he believed 90% of horses gave their best in competition and it was always a last resort....the modern rider as soon as they turn for home go the piston whip, why I have no idea, no one to teach them?......to watch those grand old horsemen of the past is a joy, hands and heels and if challenged pull the stick slowly and try to get that little extra.

Roy was a legend, I'm proud we were friends, and I loved his riding style and the open affection he had for the horses....Roy wasn't shy to show that also, the photo of Roy pashing Light Fingers [Mother] is legendary.....Thanks.

barryb,

“I’m absolutely gutted, I can’t believe it,” Higgins told www.theinformant.co.nz tonight. “I should be out celebrating with everyone else, but that’s the last thing I feel like doing.

“Amanda and I are back at our motel and me, I have to admit all I can do is feel sorry for myself.

“Once I’ve ridden at Te Aroha on Wednesday that will be it for the rest of the year. That will mean missing the Great Northern meeting, Pakuranga, National Jumps Day – whatever’s left of the season.

“It’s very hard to take, from celebrating my biggest win and thinking what it means for my career, then to be hit with this.

“I’ve put heart and soul into making a go of it over the past couple of years. It’s not easy based down in Invercargill and being the only committed jumps jockey in the whole of the South Island.

“But I’ve really pushed myself, I’ve travelled where ever I’ve had to and felt like I was making a contribution. The way I feel right now though, I’m wondering why I bothered.”

The above is taken from the Informant article available on this website and clearly backs up what "Thomass" has said. I both admire and appreciate the dedication and ability displayed by Mr Higgins but sincerely hope that someone this jockey trusts has a quiet word to him about both his whip action and his attitude towards the welfare of his mounts.

All the best.

Ashoka

perfectly said, Ashoka! The tone of his remarks is self-centred and 'woe is me' without acknowledging thew whipping was totally unnecessary

Does not back up a single thing Thomass has said, please advise us all how many other whip fines or stand downs  Higgins has had this yr?

They will sure show an indifference toward the Horse as an animal, don’t bother looking I know the answer.

A spur of the moment over exhuberance  and some of you are calling him a horse thrasher. That’s like claiming Thomass is a great punter because he tips one winner pre race.

Case closed.

barryb,

The poster "Weasel" has, above, succinctly summed up what my post demonstrated. Mr HIggins is being called a "horse thrasher" because he thrashed a horse. Whether he has done this before is irrelevant to the matter at hand, at this stage. "Thomass" averred that the jockey had shown no remorse. The accuracy of that statement is eloquently evidenced in the words of the jockey himself.

Your arrogant, ignorant post does you no credit.

So you are prepared to label Higgins a thrasher based on a Newspaper article that doesn't covey emotion, I would rather form my opinion on the facts before me rather the media's.

The facts are he has no real history of horse thrashing as you so put it, Thomass stated that Jumps Jockey's have little regard for horses, based on what?. This is just another of T's dream theories that have zero basis of fact.

Case reopened ...Thomasss never tips a winner pre-race LOL

And it highlights the appalling attitude of some of these jumps Jocks who often have gung ho indifference to these horses

"He showed little remorse"

The above is what appeared in your posting. Please note the use of the word "some", which changes the meaning of the sentence from what you have stated. The fact that Mr Higgins showed "little remorse" is evident from reading his own words, as previously pointed out in this thread. You initiated the phrase "horse thrasher" in this thread and I have continued its use as it is an accurate description of what Mr Higgins did on this occasion.

I am deeply concerned that an animal that provides me with pleasure and excitement, and is also a sentient being in its own right, can be treated in the manner displayed by this rider on this occasion without the rider acknowledging that he has transgressed.

not only did he not acknowledge the animal, he "showed little remorse" ..except for himself!! Thats why he's been given some time to think about his actions/attitude.

If it had been me running the stipes he'd be proesecuted for cruelty.

Exactly right Weasel, he got 8 weeks which is a huge penalty to endure.

I agree Ashoka many animals provide me with pleasure and excitement,  and  often they make it to my frying pan or my smoker after that pleasure has subsided & I get to be pleasured a 2nd time.

and why you attack Ashoka also offends, his posts have always been done with a high degree of thought and decorum. IMO.

Ashoka is happy making statements that have little basis & struggles to listen to others points of view, great family member of Thomass.

I eat fish and meat alright, but I respect all animals,

I respect all animals as well, I handle the fish I catch with extreme care, otherwise they taste like shit. We always keep our chicken seperate from other meats & never over cook steak.

Thank God for democracy then as I don't find his posts of little basis, in fact the opposite, for at least the past 5 years or so......on the other channel to begin with, he also offered another opinion and not always in agreement, which makes the world go around. As for the racism that was raised I can't argue on that as I wasn't privy to the offending post, suffice to say, racism has always been a problem in NZ, and yet you wouldn't have a rugby team without the Maori and Islander content/players, what a useless team the AB's would be if it was a Pakeha only make up, easy beats I say....so leave racism out of our wonderful racing site that is BOAY, please, act like decent human beings and grow up.
