I thought they were basically a social media based punters club

Even the name suggests that

Real media like Brian de Lore who was the catalyst in the whole Messara thing getting off the ground must be peeved

Especially when the BGP spend their money with overseas bookies!!!  What message does that send?

But let's not "be toxic and disaffected" - let's be positive.

The award is for TR related social media content as well and particularly ...

"new and innovative methods of storytelling and audience engagement."

It's not a technicality. It's an absence of any thing remotely demonstrating excellence in the way of Contribution to Media, Digital & Content in thoroughbred racing.

"NZTR is seeking entries from a variety of content providers and would welcome examples of new and innovative methods of storytelling and audience engagement."

I can't see how the above article could even begin to meet that criterion for the award and if the NZTR board has any gumption, and that is the best they have, I think they should decline to make the award this year because of no suitable entries.

Interesting how they award a group who bet with offshore entities.  Are they providing any funding to BGP?

Is who providing funding to BGP? What do you mean?

A fair bit went to NZ racing this day.

They are racing horses. Giving to worthy charities. Seriously punting. Getting 100s on course spending money. Getting new people involved. What more do you want? Who is doing more for NZ racing?

The group admins can’t control who the group bets with nor is there anyway knowing who is betting with who, sure some will bet offshore but the bulk of posts on the page either just mention the horse and race number or post a tab option.

Even if they are betting offshore at least they are generating interest in racing and bring atmosphere to courses with the syndicates etc. Its up to the tab to entice them to bet with them. For a while ladbrokes were offering them promos, how hard would it be for the tab to flick them a few bets on special options to generate interest and get people betting with them?

The tab seem more interested in trying to keep my wife on the active accounts list when she has no interest in racing rather than enticing actual punters.

These boys are outstanding would have loved to have had an idea like that and been part of a group when I was in my 20s

Heard the rap song when RDYT posted it on cafe no wonder he posted it, there is a line in the rap that includes him Ted giving us the smokies

Some horse that Da Kause Best I’ve ever seen better than Frankel

I think they may well be sponsored by one of the corporates

How good is it to be young and bulletproof

That rap song is just brilliant

Looking at that video

The G.O.A.T looks like a typical Parramatta supporter A Wooden Spooner!!!

Not surprised he has labelled himself as the GOAT when you get a $50 poker Multi that nearly hits a mill you can call yourself what ever you want

Yes they've set up a club...and huge big ups for getting young guns in

But that ain't 'media'

You look at the above statement, and you can't help but think it was written with BGP in mind

Good on them for the initiative they have shown in bringing young people to racing, but a media award for starting up a social media punters club??

I think you and Curious have taken my comment as a negative against BGP.  My understanding is they have a subscription model and the funds are centralised.  I may be wrong.  Given the sizable amount they have to bet with they approached agencies for a deal or an agency approached them.

NZRB (NZTAB) did not come to the party.  Ladbrokes (or another overseas bookie) did.  I heard they were challenged by the NZTAB regarding their betting overseas.  BGP got round this by having an admin in Australia doing the betting.

Obviously the return to NZ racing is less under this arrangement - assuming of course they are average punters!

So NZTAB ignores them and NZTR awards them.  Now that is an interesting dynamic and perhaps a pointer to the announcement this week.  Pot and Frying Pan come to mind.

Don't both NZRB and NZTR spend large amounts on audience engagement and storytelling themselves?  Aren't three of the other finalists on the industry payroll?

Surely PJ could have been a finalist with the competitions he runs over multiple websites.

Thanks for the clarification, My understanding is that they don’t run betting syndicates that often and the ones that I have seen have all been through the tab and mostly with a decent group on course.

It would be interesting to know if the tab offered the same deal to them in terms of free bet promotions that Ladbrokes did or just moaned. It’s wouldn't have been hard for the tab to match there offer.
