Special Agent
All of this was sticking out a mile before the announcement was made. I was starting to think I was the only one who heard all this disaster uttered by our Racing Minister, thanks for the quotes Curious. I am a bit sick of listening to all of these so called intelligent people making announcements and NOBODY challenging anything on the day at the time. It seems to me that all in attendance at these events sit there like Noddy just nodding away in apparent agreement. I also don't buy into the thought that this was the best deal going. How the hell can we deduce that when we are totally unaware of what other offers were on the table??!! Go back and look at quotes Centaur and co have regurgitated and, if staying in the industry is important to you, Google the happenings when John Allen was changing our world. It is clear that John Allen was not challenged and the reports are almost identical in whatever year it was (maybe 2015) to those of today. Shit along the lines of our new strategic partnership with Paddy Power or whoever will benefit our industry by way of technology and revenue will increase exponentially. For goodness sake wake up - history is repeating!! New Zealand is unique and overseas ideas are not our way forward. As for those in charge of our destiny now ... where will they be in five years time? In the next high paying job with the NZ Racing Industry funding the rentals, farm or pending retirement. Just because you love this industry it doesn't stop the people who make decisions on our behalf NOT GIVING A FUCK!!

Special Agent
As for the pokies, the income from these is so important for funding our industry and community groups. I know there are problem gamblers who waste away their much needed money on these machines. (Some of us waste away our much needed money on racehorses.) The number of problem gamblers in this country is very small, and some of these problem gamblers visit casinos and buy Lotto products too. What about those who are not problem gamblers and enjoy a flutter, including the odd spin on a pokie machine? Why this toadying to minority groups. Where do the experts envisage this lost pokie revenue coming from?
Chief Stipe
The strategic partnering arrangement provides an upfront payment to TAB NZ, as well as a five-year period of annual minimum guaranteed payments. Supported by this new partnering deal, the TAB NZ Board has guaranteed an immediate and significant uplift in distributions to the Racing Codes for the next five years, to the following minimum levels: $170m for 2023/24 (+36% compared to current financial year) $175m for 2024/25 (+40%) $180m for 2025/26 (+44%) $185m for 2026/27 (+48%) $200m for 2027/28 (+60%) “These are a significant uplift on the $125m distribution for the current financial year,” Mr Stewart says. Chief Stipe
Just now, Chief Stipe said: $170m for 2023/24 (+36% compared to current financial year) $175m for 2024/25 (+40%) $180m for 2025/26 (+44%) $185m for 2026/27 (+48%) $200m for 2027/28 (+60%) Right so firstly we subtract the $17m for funding the RIB - assuming their costs are going to stay the same. Which they won't. $153 for 2023/24 $158 for 24/25 $163 for 25/26 $168 for 26/27 $173 for 27/26 Do we also subtract the $5m that goes to Gambling Harm prevention? Chief Stipe
Mmmmm I wonder who has won the contract for the roll-out of facial recognition technology for the TAB outlets?
The Centaur
So where are the details of the "deal". We were promised the details when the minister approved the deal. What did NZTR know about the deal when they blatantly tried to persuade the minister. Now from NZTR we have... “Now that the approval has been given, NZTR intends to confirm the framework and test it against all budgets and industry priorities before making a formal announcement of our initiatives and stakes increases on 15 June at Karaka on the eve of the 2023 National Weanling and Broodmare Sale.” So they are happy as Larry like a boy in a lolly shop now can increase salaries and carry on as before. After all aren't we all supposed to be gullible.
Special Agent
This is disgusting the way we are treated like idiots. Indirectly we are paying their wages. I am sick of their words that say nothing ... approval, intend, confirm, framework, test, priorities, formal, initiatives ... they are talking teletubby.

Just listened to David Bennett the National racing spokesman being interviewed by Sean Plunkett a few days ago. Clearly both were confused about the intricacies of the deal but Bennett's statement that he wasn't privy to the details is alarming. Surely the opposition should be able to function in a democracy. They should have been told particularly given the TAB's long history and public involvement with the TAB.
