  1. Paul Makin (right), pictured with Luca Cumani, died aged 82. Photo: AAP Article Author AAP8:40PM27 May 2019 2 Comments Paul Makin, most famous as the owner of globe-trotting multiple Group I winner Starcraft, has died aged 82. An Australian who made his money betting on racing in Hong Kong and Japan, Makin also owned horses in Europe including Irish Oaks winner Chicquita and was a successful breeder. Makin retired from betting in 2001, and invested time and money into his racing interests. He bought Starcraft in New Zealand for $80,000 and the colt went on to win the 2004 Chipping Norton Stakes and Australian Derby and also won at Group I level in New Zealand for trainer Garry Newham. He was transferred to Luca Cumani who trained him to win Group I races in France and England. The best of Starcraft's progeny has been dual Group I winner Star Witness. Makin also had several horses in training with Peter Chapple-Hyam, including Just Brilliant and You Little Ripper. "We got on really well and he used to start every conversation with, 'Hello you Pommy'," Chapple-Hyam told the Racing Post. "I'm very sad as I really liked him and he was very good to me. "He was brilliant to train for and we had a real laugh. It's very sad. He was a man's man, a typical Aussie, and we got on so well." Makin coaxed Newham back from retirement last year and Winning Ways is set to run in the owner's colours in Saturday's Group I Queensland Oaks.
  2. Stradbroke Handicap favourite earns topweight The Bostonian will target a third consecutive Group I. Photo: AAP Article Author Racenet2:59PM27 May 2019 10 Comments Race favourite The Bostonian will have to carry topweight of 57kg as Tony Pike’s in-form galloper attempts to make history in the TAB Stradbroke Handicap on June 8. The son of Jimmy Choux is the $6 TAB favourite for the Group I as he looks to become the first horse to win the Doomben 10,000-Kingsford Smith Cup (formerly BTC Cup)-Stradbroke treble. The Bostonian carried 59kg when claiming the Kingsford-Smith (1300m) at Eagle Farm last Saturday after carrying 58.5kg in the Doombern 10,000, both those races being run under weight-for-age conditions. See Sky Racing's other Tweets Twitter Ads info and privacy Goldolphin’s Osborne Bulls was slugged with the topweight of 58kg, but the James Cummings-trained sprinter is already in the paddock. A third placing in the Kingsford-Smith sees Trekking allotted 54kgs, with runner-up Princess Posh also set to enjoy a weight swing for the rematch with 52kg. Other fancied runners include Tyzone (53kg), Despatch (54.5kg), Home Of The Brave (56kg), Victorem (51.5kg) and Outback Barbie (49.5kg). Country Championships winner Noble Boy would need a miracle to make the field despite an impressive win in Queensland last weekend. The Todd Blowes-trained four-year-old is 77th in the ballot having been weighted on 51kg. First acceptances will take place on Wednesday. For all the Stradbroke weights click HERE. 16. So basically the NZ bookie has a double indemnity on the risk!
  17. Help me out here Rangitara. If the FF was set at 130% on closing. There is a late scratching. The calculation is based on 80%. Does the bookie get a windfall profit from the late scratching?
  18. Well Bostonian beat some good horses in the first Grp 1. Happy Clapper 5th on the global ratings! Unfortunately we are still living in a false world where we think our Grp races compare with other countries.
  19. The 80 (%?) is based on a 20% deduction based on the field being set at 100%. The NZ TAB bookies are notorious for setting a field way higher than that. SO although Brodie might be complaining about not knowing before he collects what the deduction is - he may have a complaint about how much is taken out. Seems to favour the bookie and not the punter. What happens when there are TWO late scratchings? -40%?
  20. Surely after two dominant Grp1's in Australian and his NZ form must be a shoe in for Horse Of The Year!!!
  21. Doesn't that open up the potential for a rort? You haven't answered my question about REAL bookies.
  22. I meant REAL bookies not our TAB ones. Apparently the new system does all that odds setting for them! As for the selection of 80 how does that work if the book is over priced?
  23. Sorry please explain? Excuse my ignorance but I'm not a punter and nor am I an Australian brought up playing bookmakers. Though my Uncle was a pub bookie in NZ for a while. Always wondered why he was always on the phone (not a mobile!).
  24. What do Bookies do with late scratchings?
  25. I think what is worse is now the delay between on-screen/online odds and real-time is greater for both FOB and Tote than it was before the new system. Even worse if you are watching the TV odds.
