  2. Golden Sixty stretches out at Sha Tin. Vincent Ho was beaming after partnering Hong Kong’s champion Golden Sixty at Tuesday morning’s barrier trial session at Sha Tin. Preparing for a return in next month’s HK$32 million Group 1 Hong Kong Mile (1600m), Golden Sixty – an eight-year-old with 25 wins from 29 starts – dazzled with his customary late dash to cross the line first in his heat in 1:10.57 over 1200m on dirt. “He’s still very light on his legs, he doesn’t feel like an eight-year-old – he’s amazing. He still feels young, competitive and when I ask him to pick up there is no turbo lag, it’s an instant reaction – it’s so good,” Ho said. Ho returns to competition following suspension on Wednesday night at Happy Valley. The Francis Lui-trained Golden Sixty and Ho are aiming to win a third Hong Kong Mile together following their triumphs in 2020 and 2021 on 10 December at the HK$118 million Hong Kong International Races. However, this time they’ll try to do so first-up after what will be a 224-day break, with Lui opting against chasing a fourth straight HK$5.35 million Group 2 BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (1600m) victory with his horse this Sunday. “He felt good. I’m glad the horse that played up in the barriers didn’t affect us. He jumped well as usual, travelled nice and in the straight he gave me a good feel when I asked him to pick up – I’m happy with his progress,” Ho said. Golden Sixty holds the record for the most Group 1 wins in Hong Kong (nine), he is also the city’s highest earner in history with HK$147.93 million banked, while last season he defeated Romantic Warrior – last month’s Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) winner – twice in successive Group 1 races at Sha Tin over 1600m and 2000m. Ho, 33, was striking at 19% with eight wins from 42 rides before his outing. He has seven mounts at the city circuit tomorrow, including Karma. “It’s been a long wait. I’m happy to be back on horses in races,” Ho said. “He’s a nice horse, it’s his first time at Happy Valley. I hope he handles the track ok, if he handles the track, he will also be very competitive. “He’s young, up and coming, he has potential and he’s fit – ready to rock and roll. It’s just uncertain whether he’ll handle the track.” The last-start winning chestnut weighs in at 1,220lb as the race’s heaviest horse. He is a two-time winner from five starts in Hong Kong for trainer Caspar Fownes. Ho also rides Valhalla, Explosive Witness, Galvanic, Happy Day, Galaxy Witness and Capital Delight, while today he rode Straight Arron to a midfield finish at the trials. “Caspar put blinkers on him just to try and sharpen him up this morning. He’s feeling very well, in the straight I tried to go through horses and do something different with him and he didn’t hesitate around them. “He was strong in the finish and 2000 (metres) is his distance now. I’m looking forward to it, he should perform well,” Ho said. The jockey will partner the stayer in Sunday’s HK$5.35 million Group 2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2000m) at Sha Tin. Fownes also saddles Senor Toba in the same race. More racing news View the full article
  3. Taj Dragon wins his first race this season. Leading the trainers’ championship on 20 wins, Pierre Ng is confident Taj Dragon can overcome Happy Valley’s nuances when he contests the HK$3.12 million Class 2 Tokyo Handicap (1650m) under jockey Zac Purton on Wednesday night. A three-time winner from 10 starts at Sha Tin, Taj Dragon (121lb) tackles the city circuit’s unique turns, undulations and electric atmosphere for the first time with a class and distance-rising task from barrier eight against the likes of Telecom Fighters (135lb), Helene Feeling (125lb), Galaxy Witness (120lb), Hameron (120lb) and more. “He’s (Taj Dragon) brilliant after his last run. The only problem is that it’s his first time over this distance and with a wide gate. I think we’ll have to preserve him in the run. “I don’t think he’ll have any concerns handling Happy Valley. He’s been there to trial and he’s travelled before, so it shouldn’t be a problem,” Ng said. Ng, who is in sizzling form with eight wins from the last three fixtures, has assembled yet another menacing team of nine for tomorrow’s card as he aims to increase his six-win lead over Francis Lui, Danny Shum and Frankie Lor – who each have 14 wins so far. Taj Dragon’s three triumphs have come over 1400m, while last Saturday (November 11), Ng celebrated his first four-timer – three of which came in tandem with Purton. “I hope carrying the light weight in this class that he can do more – the only limit to him is his size. But he did fine carrying top weight last time, so I think it’s ok,” Ng said. Taj Dragon is the smallest runner in tomorrow night’s race with a 1,032lb bodyweight. He is yet to race beyond 1400m across his career. Humble Star, Fortune Warrior, Super Commander, Dragon Star, Tattenham, Spicy So Smart, Healthy Healthy and Brilliant Way round out Ng’s representatives at the Valley. Looking ahead to Sunday’s Group 2 triple-header at Sha Tin, Ng saddles Duke Wai and Super Wealthy in the HK$5.35 million Group 2 BOCHK Private Banking Jockey Club Sprint (1200m). “He’s (Duke Wai) doing well after his trial. We have nothing to complain about,” Ng said. Super Wealthy is first-up this weekend following an extended break at Conghua, where he has trialled three times, while Duke Wai returns after his close-up third in the HK$5.35 million Group 2 Premier Bowl Handicap (1200m) behind Sight Success and Lucky Sweynesse, respectively. “He (Super Wealthy) had colic surgery towards the end of March, so we’ve given him time to bring him back up,” Ng said. Luke Ferraris rides Super Wealthy, while Andrea Atzeni partners both Duke Wai and Glorious Dragon, with the latter resuming in the HK$5.35 million Group 2 BOCHK Jockey Club Cup (2000m) on the same day. “I don’t know why or how he’s (Glorious Dragon) done it but he looks brilliant. He’s sustained injuries before but he’s moving very well, he’s sound and he’s enjoying Conghua,” Ng said. The eight-year-old races for the first time since his unplaced Group 1 Dubai Turf (1800m) effort at Meydan in Dubai last March. Sunday’s programme also features the HK$5.35 million Group 2 BOCHK Private Wealth Jockey Club Mile (1600m). More racing news View the full article
  4. It is time for Stuart Janney to make his greatest gift to racing. On Sunday afternoon, I received a text from a colleague alerting me that I should tune into 60 Minutes later that night to watch their feature, “Horse Racing Reform?” Never before has it been more clear that as the sun begins to set on 2023, we are well past time to modernize the structure of The Jockey Club to make it accountable to all Thoroughbred industry stakeholders. The Jockey Club ought to be a fair representation of the industry and the industry should guide its future. No one man or family should have absolute control over The Jockey Club. In the current climate, it is no longer acceptable for industry participants to be kept in complete darkness. We implore you, Mr. Janney, to give the greatest gift to those of us still in love with the greatest game by taking the CLUB out of the Club. Eliminate the secrecy. Change the structure of The Jockey Club so that industry stakeholders have the opportunity to elect the members and board who may in turn control the finances, agenda, and direction of the industry with a transparency beneficial to all. Mr. Janney, give The Jockey Club to the industry. –Max Hodge The post Letter to the Editor: `Give The Jockey Club to the Industry’ appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 5. The market demand for National Hunt foals remains strong, as the third session concluded on Tuesday with a colt by Walk In The Park (Ire) bringing €100,000 from Gerry Aherne and Charles Shanahan. Sold as lot 509 from the consignment of Oliver Loughlin, the bay is out of Posh Trish (Ire) (Stowaway {GB}), a listed winner. Posh Trish was originally sold by Loughlin for €1,200 at the 2013 November NH Sale. He is one of nine foals to sell north of €80,000 over the sale so far, with only four achieving that milestone over the whole sale in 2022. “As soon as this colt was born I thought I might hit the jackpot as he has looked a star from the start,” said Loughlin. “He is an image of her, a baby of her.” He added of Walk In The Park as the second mate of Posh Trish, who he picked back up for €118,000 out of the 2020 November National Hunt Sale, “He is a good stallion, she was a good mare and the plan is always to bred the best to the best.” “For us he is the best foal here,” said Aherne. “We probably will race him, but not yet decided for sure. The mare was very good and is very good-looking. Oliver is a good breeder and we have been lucky with him before.” A colt by Kapgarde (Fr) (lot 643) from Clonbonny Stud attracted a winning bid of €92,000 from Jamie Codd later in the day. The first foal of the winning hurdler Cushuish (GB) (Yeats {Ire}), the colt's second dam is Grade 2-winning chaser My Petra (GB) (Midnight Legend {GB}). His dam is also a half-sister to Grade 1 hurdler My Drogo (GB) (Milan {GB}). “We'll get him home before we make a plan, but he has all the options,” said Codd. “He could go racing, or he could end up coming back here to the Derby Sale. We had to stretch to get him, but he's a lovely horse and is the only one by the sire in the sale.” Rounding out the top three was a €90,000 son of Nathaniel (Ire) (lot 722) from Peel Hall Stables. NBB Racing and Joey Logan picked up the third foal of Grade 2 Cheltenham winner Limini (Ire) (Pentre Celebre). Limini was also placed four times at the highest level over jumps. “The foal is initially going stay in Ireland with Joey but will go to France as a racing prospect–hopefully he will make up into a good juvenile hurdler,” said NBB Racing's Nicolas Bertran de Balanda. “He is very racy and correct.” At the end of day three, 173 lots of 234 offered (74%) sold for a gross of €4,283,500. The average stayed flat at €24,760, while the median rose 5% to €21,000. The fourth session, containing National Hunt-bred foals, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday. 13. Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. 14. Every week, the TDN posts a roundup of the relevant Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) related rulings from around the country. Among the key rulings from the last seven days, trainer Natalia Lynch has been handed down a combined four-year suspension by an arbitrator, and a combined $55,000 in fines and arbitration costs. Lynch had faced sanctions for two separate issues. One was for the possession of banned thyroid drug, Levothyroxine. The other was a positive test for another banned substance, Altrenogest—a synthetic progestin used in horses for the purpose of suppressing estrus—from Lynch-trainee, Motion to Strike. Lynch's attorney told the TDN Monday that the trainer plans to appeal the arbitration result to a Federal Trade Commission administrative law judge. An interesting wrinkle in the case is how in a series of proposed rule changes now headed out for public comment, HISA is seeking to alter the status of Altrenogest from a substance banned at all times to a controlled substance, permitted for use within certain criteria. Controlled substance positive findings are significantly leaner than those for banned substances. Also this past week, trainer David Reid has been banned four months and fined $4,125 after his trainee, Maligator, tested positive for the banned substance, Venlafaxine. The case was resolved without a merits hearing. Reid had previously provided proof to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Unit (HIWU) that his assistant of over 30 years had been prescribed Venlafaxine for 15 years. The Horseracing Integrity and Welfare Unit (HIWU) established “by a balance of probability” that Maligator's positive finding was brought about by consuming hay contaminated as a result of the assistant relieving herself in the horse's stall. NEW HISA/HIWU STEWARDS RULINGS The following rulings were reported on HISA's “rulings” portal and through the HIWU's “pending” and “resolved” cases portals. 15. Editor's note: After 60 Minutes aired a segment called “Horse Racing Reform?” on its Sunday night broadcast, Dark Hollow Farm's JoAnn Hayden posted a letter she had written to 60 Minutes on her Facebook page and urging friends and racing industry members to do the same. She writes: “I have always felt proud and grateful to be part of Maryland's thoroughbred racing community. Over the past 50+ years my circle of friends, employees, trainers, and colleagues have been exemplary humans who have provided the best care for my horses and have always had my back. I cannot let the 60 Minutes segment on cheaters, corruption and breakdowns be the last word. Please take the time to send a response to Cecilia Vega and 60 Minutes. The horse industry deserves better! We deserve better! Send to 60min@cbsnews.com.” Her own letter to 60 Minutes reads: Good Morning 60 Minutes and Cecilia Vega. I am writing in response to Sunday evening's segment on racing's worst problems which did a great job of casting doubt upon the future of the Thoroughbred industry which I love. I question your motives. Why would 60 Minutes choose to highlight cheaters and horse deaths to present to their 12 million viewers at a time when this industry is in crisis? Thoroughbred racing just completed a successful Breeders Cup weekend with so many newsworthy stories to report. World class race horses, devoted owners, hardworking HONEST trainers and backstretch workers and the world's best racing and there was no mention of that! Where was the poignant account of the bond between the boy Cody Dorman and the horse Cody's Wish? Why is the only news offered for this sport about tragedy or corruption? Where were the statistics to show how drastically the fatality numbers have decreased and the protocols that have been implemented for the safety and welfare of our horses and jockeys and their track surfaces? I accept that you have the right to present your gruesome facts and sound bites of cheaters and horrific footage of horses breaking down but you could have acknowledged the honest hardworking people in our industry and left us with HOPE. WE deserve better! My GOOD news story is from Maryland and I owe it to my horses, trainers, workers and myself to acknowledge what racehorses have done for me. 16. One of the reasons that the Racing League has struggled to catch on is that the organisers have underestimated the attachment that regular racegoers and viewers have to certain sets of silks. We all have our favourites, often depending on when we were born and who the leading lights were at the time. Some have now faded from everyday use, and for this fan the Ballymacoll Stud colours are much missed. Certain silks have such resonance that one almost doesn't need to have a race card handy to have an educated guess at the standard of certain races about to happen, and if the colours of the Niarchos family are spotted in the parade ring then it's a safe bet that there's a classy maiden or Pattern race in store. Happily, those distinctive colours are not about to disappear, though the restructuring of the family's bloodstock operation has brought about a proper 'bloodstock event', and one which offers a mouthwatering opportunity for other breeders to buy into some of the best Niarchos pedigrees. Forty of their fillies and mares will be offered at Goffs next week. Friday's session is likely to be the liveliest of the November Breeding Stock Sale since the Wildenstein Stables dispersal of 2016 or the Paulyn dispersal a decade ago when Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), sold for €6 million to Coolmore, became the most expensive horse ever to sell in Ireland. “We had a big draft last November at Goffs but this one is exceptional because the offerings include three homebred Group 1 winners,” says Alan Cooper, who has been the Niarchos family's racing manager for almost 40 years. He adds with no little understatement, “It's a very special gathering of the family's stock.” Before we run through some of the bluebloods on offer, it is worth emphasising that the Niarchos family will still be developing these equine families through the young stock being retained. More than 100 horses, including those in training, remain within their ownership. “It's not a dispersal,” says Cooper. “These are going to auction but from each of the core families, we've got several fillies who are either foals, yearlings, or two-year-olds of this year going forward. We're not cutting the tie with any of the top families. That is important because Maria and her father and her brothers have built this up, and it's still ongoing.” Stavros Niarchos, the Greek shipping tycoon, made a significant impact on the world of Thoroughbred breeding in the second half of the twentieth century, and his passion for the sport was shared by his daughter Maria Niarchos-Gouaze, one of his five children, who took on the running of the bloodstock sector of her father's empire following his death in 1996. Earlier this year, Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard, the Normandy farm bought by Stavros Niarchos in 1979, was put up for sale. It had previously been home at different times in their lives to such luminaries of the turf as Nureyev, his incredible daughter Miesque, and her influential son Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector). Other top names include Hernando (Ire) (Niniski) and his son Sulamani (Ire), both of whom were winners of the Prix du Jockey Club, and the Breeders' Cup Mile victrix Six Perfections (Fr) (Celtic Swing {GB}). Members of those families and more are included in the draft for next week's sale. As referred to above, three Group 1 winners form the cornerstone of that elite group. Albigna (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), the Prix Marcel Boussac winner whose first foal by Wootton Bassett (GB) sold for €460,000 as a yearling this season, is offered as Lot 1212 from Baroda Stud and is in foal to St Mark's Basilica (Fr). She also has a weanling filly by Dubawi (Ire) on the ground. Later, as Lot 1240 from Kiltinan Castle Stud, comes Alpine Star (Ire) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), the G1 Coronation S .winner who was runner-up in the G1 Prix de Diane, G1 Jacques Le Marois ad G1 Prix de l'Opera. She is in foal to Frankel (GB) and had a colt foal by the same stallion. It remains to be seen which of the draft becomes the jewel of the crown in broodmare terms, but as a racehorse it is easy to argue the case for Alpha Centauri (Ire) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}), who sells last of all as Lot 1263 from Norelands and is in foal to Sea The Stars (Ire), carrying what will be her fourth offspring. On the track she was both the European champion three-year-old filly and champion three-year-old miler of 2018, when her wins included the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation S., Falmouth S., and Prix Jacques Le Marois, which ran under the long-term sponsorship of the Niarchos family. Alpine Star and Alpha Centauri are half-sisters and daughters of the Rahy mare Alpha Lupi, representing the family which has become synonymous with the name Niarchos. Their granddam was another Jacques Le Marois winner and dual Classic heroine, East Of The Moon (Private Account), herself a daughter of one of the most revered mares of the modern era, Miesque. The latter's many Group/Grade 1 triumphs included back-to-back wins in both the Jacques Le Marois and Breeders' Cup Mile, as well as victories in the 1,000 Guineas, Poule d'Essai des Pouliches, Prix Marcel Boussac, Prix de la Salamandre, and Prix d'Ispahan. And that was just the entree to Miesque's celebrated career at stud. The Hall of Famer produced the aforementioned Classic winners Kingmambo and East Of The Moon, as well as the Group 3 winners Miesque's Son (Mr. Prospector) and Mingun (A P Indy), Listed winner Moon Is Up (Woodman) and stakes-placed Inventing Paradise (Mr. Prospector). Another daughter, Second Happiness (Storm Cat), is the dam of the Prix du Jockey Club winner and young sire Study Of Man (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), while another, Kingmambo's full-sister Monevassia, is the dam of Group 1 winner Rumplestiltskin (Ire) (Danehill). Along with the aforementioned Group 1 winners, Miesque's direct line is also represented in the three-year-old Frankel filly Humankind (Lot 1104). Meanwhile, another branch of the family appears through Miesque's half-sister Yogya (Riverman), the dam of Six Perfections whose daughter Raja Ampat (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) features as Lot 1259 and is carrying a member of the first crop of Baaeed (GB). Six Perfections' unraced four-year-old granddaughter See (War Front) is Lot 1105, and that filly's full-sister La Fiamma is Lot 1181, and is sold in foal to Mehmas (Ire). Another family which has stood the operation in great stead is that of Coup De Folie, the Halo mare bought from her breeder EP Taylor as a yearling who went on to win the G3 Prix d'Aumale. She later become the dam of Machiavellian (Mr. Prospector), his fellow Group 1 winner and full-sister Coup De Genie, and Exit To Nowhere (Irish River {Fr}), who was yet another winner of the Jacques Le Marois in the Niarchos silks. That line thrives still, notably through Coup De Genie's daughter Moonlight's Box (Nureyev), the dam of Arc winner Bago (Fr) (Nashwan), dual Group 1 winner Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) and Listed-placed Malicieuse (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), whose Deep Impact daughter Bold As Love (Ire) gets the ball rolling when offered as Lot 1102, the first of the draft. Worldwide influences loom large among the Niarchos broodmare band, which has ties beyond Europe, to America, South Africa, and Australia. Significantly the family has long had strong links to Japan, before other major owner-breeders caught on to this fertile source of class. “Maria was definitely a precursor of the modern age on that,” says Cooper. “And thanks to the good relations we built up with Teruya and Chizu Yoshida, which came through Hector Protector going over [to stud in Japan]. We sent him mares and then sent mares to Sunday Silence and then Deep Impact as well. And we branched out every now and again, we took mares to Bago, of course, and Lord Kanaloa, Daiwa Major.” He continues, “And we've even got some Australian influence in the draft, with Dawn Wall [by Fastnet Rock] in there and Provocateuse by Pride of Dubai. It's truly global.” One of those mares sent to the Classic-winning homebred Hector Protector, who was later sold to Zenya Yoshida of Shadai Farm for his stallion career, was Lingerie (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB}), a daughter of another important founder of a dynasty in Northern Trick (Northern Dancer), winner of the G1 Prix de Diane and G1 Prix Vermeille. Lingerie's daughter Shiva was foaled in Japan and exported to Europe where she won the G1 Tattersalls Gold Cup. Her half-sister Light Shift (Kingmambo), also trained by Henry Cecil, later won the Oaks. Five members of Lingerie's family are catalogued, including Shiva's Listed-winning daughter That Which Is Not (Elusive Quality), the dam of Group 3 winner Piz Badile (Ire), who is by another Niarchos-bred stallion in Ulysses (Ire). The 40 mares are spread between the drafts of Norelands, Baroda and Kiltinan Castle Studs, and are also dotted evenly through the Friday of the catalogue in groups of five or six. “All those studs have boarded mares for us,” Cooper explains. “With this number of horses we thought it was best to divide them up between these teams, who all do a wonderful job. We thought it was very manageable that way for us, too. It would be too much for everybody to sit and watch 40 horses go through together.” Cooper arrived at the Niarchos family's London office in February 1984 to work as assistant to Sir Philip Payne-Gallwey, the former racing manager to Stavros Niarchos who played such a key role in the operation's success through his purchase of Miesque's sire and dam, Nureyev and Pasadoble, as well as Northern Trick, as yearlings in Kentucky. “He went back to the BBA in 1987 and I've been here ever since,” says Cooper. “Karen Clark was here before me, and she's still very much part of the original team.” Of the draft itself, he adds, “It goes back to the yearling fillies purchased in the 80s: you've got Pasadoble, the dam of Miesque; Coup De Folie, the dam of Coup De Genie, and so much has come down from those two alone. But then you spread out and another branch of Miesque's family was Yogya, the dam of Six Perfections, another family goes back to Rare Mint, and we've got a great-granddaughter of hers, Celestial Lagoon, represented through several of her daughters. Then you've got Lyrism, the dam of Whakilyric, who is the third dam of Nature Spirits. “So there's a lot of families that we've had for generations. It's quite a history.” The post Niarchos Draft: ‘We’re Not Cutting Ties With Any of the Top Families’ appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 17. Stable Recovery is a rehabilitation program in Lexington, Kentucky that provides a safe living environment and a peer-driven, therapeutic community for men in the early stages of recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Along with going to 12-step meetings and support groups, residents attend the School of Horsemanship at Taylor Made Farm to learn a new vocation in the Thoroughbred industry. The School of Horsemanship is a project that was created by Frank Taylor two years ago and has since seen over a 100 men go through the program. Many of those graduates have gone on to pursue a career in an equine-related field. Spy Coast Farm, Rood & Riddle, WinStar Farm and Godolphin have recently partnered with Stable Recovery as the program looks to expand its reach throughout Lexington. The TDN is launching a new series, 'The Road Back,' where once a month we will profile a graduate of the School of Horsemanship and Stable Recovery programs. First up is Mike Lowery, a divisional manager at Taylor Made Farm. “My first day at Taylor Made, I was scared to death,” Mike Lowery admits with a grin. He's sitting on the back porch of the Stable Recovery house at Taylor Made during his lunch break. Behind him, grazing mares dot an autumn-hued pasture. “I had never touched a horse or been to Keeneland until two and a half years ago when I started the School of Horsemanship,” he recounted. “A horse is a really large animal and you want me to be up close and personal with it? I was terrified. But there was one mare that day and I don't know what it was about her. I was going through some things in my early sobriety and it was something about the way that she looked at me. It was weird. I can't explain it. It was like she was telling me that everything was going to be alright and I just fell in love with the horse at that point.” One home of the Stable Recovery program is in downtown Lexington and the other is at Taylor Made Farm | Katie Petrunyak Lowery, age 33, has hardly gone a day without being around horses since. Now the divisional broodmare manager at Taylor Made, he is responsible for overseeing 200 horses–managing their daily care, foaling mares every spring and preparing them for the breeding shed, and teaching foals their first lessons on the ground. “It's a big responsibility, but I'm pretty honored and blessed to have this position,” he said. A few weeks ago, Nov. 4 marked three years of sobriety for Lowery. Living and working on the farm and leading over a dozen employees, he is worlds away from the hopeless place he had once found himself. His story before he stepped foot on the path to where he is now? “It's dark,” he warns, but gives a small smile as he settles back into his chair. He's told this story before. “Really it started young. When I was 14 I started dabbling in alcohol and marijuana and then it progressively got worse from there. I grew up with a single mother, so I always felt a little different. It got really bad when I was about 21, but it didn't hit home until I was sleeping in the park a few years later in my hometown at Woodland Park. I had an 'aha' moment where I saw myself and I didn't like the way that I looked or the way I felt with the pain and misery that comes along with drug addiction.” Lowery had tried to reclaim his life many times in the years leading up to when he finally hit rock bottom. He had been to 13 different treatment facilities for short stays, but fell back into addiction as soon as he got out. He always had reservations in the back of his mind that the treatment wouldn't work, that recovery “was kind of BS.” He didn't want to take time out of his life by committing to sitting around a circle at a recovery center for months on end. “My family is from Lexington and it wasn't that they didn't love me, but they just couldn't see me in the condition that I was in,” he explained. “They kind of cut ties. My mom had me at a young age so I can't imagine what it felt like for her to see her oldest son in that condition. Nobody wanted to see me like that. I thought I was just affecting myself, but I was really affecting the people around me who loved me. My children, my mother. Other people suffered as well.” When Lowery finally checked into a year-long treatment program, the scale read 147 pounds, which is 100 pounds less than his current healthy weight. He was living at the Shepherd's House, a transitional residential drug addiction treatment center in Lexington, when he first heard about the School of Horsemanship. “I heard that this guy Frank Taylor had this crazy idea of taking alcoholics and drug addicts and putting them into the work force because there is shortage of employees in the equine industry,” Lowery recalled. Lowery was a member of the very first group to join the School of Horsemanship in 2021. He and his classmates were dubious at first, but as they gained new skills like picking feet, showing a horse and cleaning a stall, they found themselves looking forward to what they might learn the next day. “We were pretty lost at the beginning, but a few guys took us under their wing and showed us the ropes,” Lowery said. “Nobody could really believe that it was working. I still can't believe it sometimes, but it is.” The Stable Recovery team at Taylor Made | courtesy Stable Recovery After three months, Lowery graduated from the program and joined Taylor Made as a full-time groom. Another member of his graduating class was Will Walden, who came up with the idea of starting something similar to the School of Horsemanship on the racetrack. Frank Taylor supplied Walden's venture with its first group of yearlings and Lowery joined Walden and one other classmate in Ocala to help break the babies. Their three-man team–with Walden as trainer, Lowery as groom and Tyler Maxwell as exercise rider–launched their stable at Keeneland last spring and had their first winner at Churchill Downs on May 13. The barn took off from there and Lowery traveled with Walden from Churchill Downs to Turfway Park to Ellis Park. It was especially at Ellis, three hours away from home, that he realized he didn't want to be working so far from his family. Lowery had several job opportunities back in Lexington, but he ultimately found his way back to Taylor Made. He returned to the farm as a barn foreman and soon stepped up to his current position as a divisional manager. “I could go work at a factory or do construction or whatever, but it would be the same thing every day,” he explained. “Here, with the number of horses that Taylor Made has, it's always something new every day. I love that and it drives me. It keeps me going because as soon as I think that I know something, I get humbled really quick.” On any given day, Lowery manages several people in the School of Horsemanship program. It's one of his favorite parts of his job. “I don't forget where I came from,” he said. “I'm just like those guys. I'm in recovery as well. The only difference is that I've put in a little more time.” There is something about the horse, he says, that has a significant impact on people going through recovery. “The way I look at it, we have domesticated them so they depend on us for everything–feed, water, their feet,” he explained. “I really think it gives people in recovery a purpose. Especially in early recovery, if you don't have a purpose then really what are you doing?” Lowery and his family live on the farm and his two children ages two and four have developed a fondness for their four-legged neighbors. To be able to provide his family with a home in an tranquil environment like the rolling acres of Taylor Made is an opportunity that he never really thought was possible. “It's special,” he said. “I grew up without a father, so that was something that I never wanted to put my children through but because of the drug addiction I ended up doing that to them. Now I can provide a beautiful home for them and they love the horses here. It means a lot to me.” Stable Recovery, and its partner the School of Horsemanship, is looking to expand throughout Lexington. Rood & Riddle, Spy Coast Farm, Godolphin and WinStar Farm have already joined the project and there is a current wait list plenty long enough for more partners to join. Lowery said he knows it might be a big ask for employers, but he can personally attest to the impact it could make. “Not everybody that comes through here is going to make it or is going to stay sober, so you do have that,” he admits. “But for the most part, the percentage of success is high. You're getting good quality employees that can pass a drug test and will show up every day for work. To me that's all you can ask for. And you're helping people. My life is completely different than what it looked like a few years ago. Back then I wouldn't have known anybody crazy enough to hire guys like me, knowing my previous history. They gave me an opportunity when really nobody else would have, so for that I'm forever grateful.” The post The Road Back: Once Homeless, Mike Lowery Found Purpose at Taylor Made appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 20. The Kentucky Horsemen's Benevolent & Protective Association (HBPA) has hired lifelong horseman Alex Foley as its new executive director, the organization announced Tuesday. The 32-year-old Foley takes over for Marty Maline, who held the position for almost 47 years until his retirement at the end of 2022. Foley is the younger son of veteran trainer Greg Foley and the grandson of the late owner-trainer-breeder Dravo Foley. He graduated from Bellarmine University with a degree in business management and from the University of Louisville's Brandeis School of Law with his Juris Doctor. “He was interviewed by our search committee, and they were impressed by him and his credentials,” said Kentucky HBPA President Rick Hiles. “He's a young man, he's got a history in racing from his dad and grandpa. He knows everybody on the backside. He has a law degree. We thought he could get in that position and have some longevity.” Foley has served as an assistant to his father, and his brother Travis is also an assistant trainer to their father. Their aunt Vickie Foley is also a trainer. “The horse-racing industry and my legal background, I've always wanted to do both but didn't have the avenue,” Foley said. “This job provides that. The connections I have on the backside–whether it's horse trainers, gallop boys, assistants–I've known so many people that it was a perfect fit and something I'm passionate about.” The post Kentucky HBPA Hires Foley As Executive Director appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 23. Mark Walker is hoping a long range plan put in place back in February comes to fruition on Saturday when Zourion (NZ) (Zoustar) lines up in the A$1.5 million Gr.1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas. Chats with Brendan and Jo Lindsay took place after the Cambridge Stud-owned fillies Matamata Breeders’ Stakes victory to target the now delayed Group One classic. A wide run in the Thousand Guineas Prelude has Walker convinced the daughter of Zoustar will run the mile on Saturday. “Mick Dee said she really toughed it out, Mick said she was entitled not to do what she did and he worked her this morning and thinks she’s come on even further,” Walker said. “She’s just continued to eat which is a really good sign for a three-year-old filly. “We have got no doubts about the mile I think it will really suit her. “You would love to just draw a barrier and do no work.” The $475,000 Karaka purchase is a $17 chance with Sportsbet for the Thousand Guineas. Walker said no decision had been made if she stays in Australia or returns to New Zealand at the end of this campaign. View the full article

  25. By Michael Guerin New Zealand’s most important and historic harness race got a shot of Aussie adrenalin at maybe the perfect time when Swayzee smashed the locals in the $750,000 IRT New Zealand Cup at Addington on Tuesday. The New South Wales pacer won the tactical early battle over Canterbury favourite Akuta and was able to stroll to the lead after a lap, from where he never looked like being beaten. While Akuta moved to park outside him with a lap to go and even secured the trail at the 600m as the pace took its toll on tiring rivals, he couldn’t close the gap and Swayzee was going away at the line to win by two and a half lengths from Akuta and Beach Ball. It was a commanding, don’t argue performance from the five-year-old who is now unbeaten in nine starts since joining trainer Jason Grimson, who was all but unknown three years ago and has now won the biggest races in Australia and the greatest pacing race here. Swayzee was driven by Grimson’s close friend Cameron Hart who has emerged as the bright young face of Australian harness driving, jockey-like in stature and polish and with the harness world at his feet. Swayzee’s victory surely opens a doorway for future Australian raids and that could be the enthusiasm injection harness racing needs and deserves. When Australia’s best pacers and trotters race here at New Zealand Cup and Race By Grins time they bring with them turnover, media coverage and eyeballs and give the code an edge the local thoroughbred industry find hard to replicate. So while an Australian victory on the second Tuesday in November may dent the nationalistic pride of Kiwi harness racing people, if it means more Aussies chance their arms here that can only be good for the industry. Also good for the industry is flying filly Millwood Nike, who rivalled Swayzee for performance of the day as she remained unbeaten at her 16th start in the Nevele R Fillies Final. She was never closer to the inside than three wide the entire race and must have covered 50m more than some of her opponents yet seems impervious to lactic acid build-up and cruised clear to win by six lengths in national record time. Her former stablemate Adore Me may be the greatest pacing filly New Zealand has produced by there is now no evidence to suggest Millwood Nike is inferior and she is a $1.10 favourite to win next month’s New Zealand Oaks. Millwood Nike’s younger stablemate Chase A Dream was the other freak show on a stunning Canterbury day when he came from last to win the Sires’ Stakes Final for juvenile pacing boys. He never looked like winning but made up eight lengths in the last 600m, much of that in the last 300m, to cement himself as our best freshman pacer. On any normal day he would have been all anybody was talking about but at Addington on this Tuesday he had to settle for the bronze medal in the race for performance of the day. Because most people were talking about Swayzee or Millwood Nike. Except the Australians. They weren’t talking, they were yelling. Harness racing should hope those yells were heard all the way across the Tasman and they, and others, come back for more. View the full article
