  2. by Dave Di Somma, Harness News Desk Andre Poutama is hoping to go out with a bang at Palmerston North this afternoon. The Pukekohe-based trainer-driver has a good book of six drives at the mini meeting in what will be a finale of sorts. “It’s actually my last meeting there for the season,” says Poutama. With a young family of three children and work commitments at Lincoln Farms and training his own team of seven, Poutama says something had to give and that’s why he’s decided not to make the regular six or more hour drive from South Auckland to Palmerston North for the rest of the season. In race one, the Thank You Bryce and Eva Handicap Trot, he drives last start winner Johnny Who for his uncle and local trainer Stephen Doody. “He’s off 30 metres this time though so it’s a different scenario but he’s a chance. Mr Monty looks the hardest to beat,” Poutama says, “Johnny is more top four.” Also trained by Doody, Mr Monty is currently at $5 on the fixed odds with Johnny Know at $6.50. There’s a family connection to his second drive of the day in the Book For Xmas Function 14 december Mobile Pace. Toe the Line, also trained by Doody, is raced on lease by Poutama’s parents Liz and Warren. “He’s no world beater but it’s a winnable race for him” Second at his last start, Toe The Line is currently a $2.80 favourite. Poutama’s best chance, by his own assessment, is Obadiah Dragon in the Congratulations Ray Dempsey Life Member Mobile Pace. Trained by Ray Green he’s coming off a second behind Minjee at Cambridge last month. “The last time he was here (Manawatu) he was unlucky and never got clear.” He’s been backed in to $1.85 to make it win number one from his eighth start. After winning at Auckland in an amateur drivers’ race last start, Proviseur heads south for trainer Craig Sharpe in the Doug Bradley Sponsors Lounge Mobile pace. “He has to be driven with one run,” says Poutama, who says he’s an each way chance at $10 and $2.80. Major Achievement is in the “same boat” . “He has a good turn of foot but he is still green.” He’s at $8 in the markets. Whiskey On The Rocks completes Poutama’s day in the Racing Again 21st and 23rd November Mobile Pace. He is a $5.50 third favourite behind Lady la Salle and Greater Good. “He was fourth last start and should be better with a run under his belt.” So how does Poutama sum up his last drives at Manawatu for a while – “they are not bad at all!”. Race 1 is at 2.59pm with the sixth and last going at 5.04pm. View the full article
  3. A layer of trans-Tasman rivalry will be brought to the second running of The Quokka after Perth Racing agreed to partner with New Zealand’s Trackside Media for their slot in the A$5M feature for the next three years. Trackside is the media and broadcast arm of TAB in New Zealand, which Entain operates under a 25-year strategic partnering agreement. Trackside also had a slot in this year’s Everest, with I Wish I Win (NZ) (Savabeel) finishing a luckless second. The association with The Everest helped build the profile and awareness of that race in New Zealand and similar benefits are expected to flow through for The Quokka. “We definitely saw the impact it had in New Zealand to be able to run in one of these big money Aussie slot races,” Entain New Zealand Managing Director Cameron Rodger said. “The whole thoroughbred racing industry received a massive lift from the experience, and we hope securing a slot in The Quokka will provide another avenue for us to promote the very best of New Zealand racing. “We had a fabulous experience partnering with Waikato Stud’s I Wish I Win in the Everest, and our aim for The Quokka will be to again showcase Kiwi thoroughbred talent, and there is plenty to consider particularly with Imperatriz and others performing so strongly.” The second running of the Quokka will be held at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on Saturday, April 20. The inaugural race was won by Overpass (Vancouver) narrowly ahead of WA champion Amelia’s Jewel (Siyouni) and recent Giga Kick Stakes winner, Bella Nipotina (Pride Of Dubai). Perth Racing CEO James Oldring welcomed the Kiwi interest in the second running of the race. “Obviously The Quokka is still in its infancy, but we saw an amazing race this year and with prizemoney lifting to $5m in 2024 we only expect momentum to build,” Oldring said. “When Trackside approached us about partnering on our slot, we saw this as a prime opportunity to help enhance the growth and awareness around the race internationally. “The New Zealand market is crucial for us in WA. It is important from a breeding perspective and there is an opportunity for growth from a wagering perspective, not only on this race, but more broadly, with New Zealand being our most significant contributor to international media rights revenue in recent years. “Entain NZ supports a racing industry there that has a very proud heritage. They are already making great strides and it will be terrific to have a strong Kiwi presence in the Quokka. We’re really looking forward to partnering with them to raise the profile of the race, and racing across both jurisdictions.” View the full article

With the heavily fancied Chain Of Lightning (-153.85) on his inside, the daughter of Brazen Beau quickly got the better of the race favourite and raced clear to record a dominant 1.25 length victory, with Lavish Girl (+3000) running home into second place. 2021: Bella Nipotina explodes to win How Now Stakes Bella Nipotina (+260) has overcome some bad luck in the home straight to explode through a gap and run away with an arrogant victory in the Group 3 How Now Stakes. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained mare was well backed before the jump of the race, but punters would have been worried when she was stuck in behind a wall of horses at the 200m mark. However, Craig Williams found a gap and pushed the button, which saw her run away from Chassis (+1100) and La Mexicana (+400) to win by just under a length. 2020: Felicia races away for her rivals in How Now Dean Binaisse and Craig Williams have combined with Felicia (+500) to take out the Group 3 How Now Stakes. After settling outside the leader, the daughter of Unencumbered took over at the 300m mark to boot clear by three lengths on her rivals. Broadwayandfourth (+3000) and Fiesta (+1100) ran home nicely from the back to finish in second and third, respectively. 2019: Manicure blows her rivals away to claim How Now Rachel King has given Manicure (+1100) a peach of a ride to take out the 2019 Group 3 How Now Stakes at Caulfield, where she flew down the outside and blew her rivals away with a superior turn of foot. After settling behind the speed, King got her mount into the three-wide line, before pushing the button to go straight past the leaders. Angelic Ruler (+1700) and Dawn Dawn (+2000) made a lot of ground up from the back but finished over two lengths behind the winner in second and third, respectively. 5. What Gosford Races Where The Entertainment Grounds – 4 Racecourse Rd, West Gosford NSW 2250 When Tuesday, November 14, 2023 First Race 1:10pm AEDT Visit Dabble NSW provincial racing heads to Gosford on Tuesday afternoon for a quickfire seven-race program kicking off at 1:10pm AEDT. The rail is out +3m the entire circuit, and with only a minor chance of showers in the lead-up, we’re confident the track should be a Good 4. Read on to see HorseBetting’s Gosford racing tips for the day. Best Bet: Thermodynamic Thermodynamic returned on the Kensington track at Randwick on October 18, and although he was beaten by 2.9 lengths, we liked what we saw from the son of Kodiac. He sat on the outside of the eventual winner throughout the 1300m contest and just faltered late due to fitness. The 1600m should be ideal, with the three-year-old bred to stay over a trip, and with Jason Collett set to take the reins in what looks a much easier maiden, Thermodynamic will test these. Best Bet Race 3 – #1 Thermodynamic (7) 3yo Gelding | T: Chris Waller | J: Jason Collett (59kg) -142.86 with Betfair Next Best: Yankee One Yankee One broke her maiden on debut at this course on October 26 and looks perfectly placed to go back-to-back. The daughter of Snitzel went on to score by 1.6 lengths and seemingly had plenty left in the tank after circling most of her rivals to secure victory. The Ciaron Maher & David Eustace barn had Yankee One flying at the trials prior to that first-up success, and provided she’s entering this contest in similar order, we expect her to put them away again. Next Best Race 2 – #5 Yankee One (4) 3yo Filly | T: Ciaron Maher & David Eustace | J: Jason Collett (58kg) +115 with Bet365 Best Value: Ravisher Ravisher will return to the races after 132 days off the scene but looks to be jumping out extremely well. Her two starts last preparation left a lot to be desired, as the now four-year-old was unable to make an impression. Both performances were at metropolitan level, so as she steps back to provincial grade, we’re keen to see if Ravisher can pick up a maiden win. 9. Godolphin homebred Nash (Medaglia d'Oro–Sara Louise, by Malibu Moon) was locked in for his second start and proved it when he ran up the score on Sunday afternoon at Churchill Downs to attain the distinction 'TDN Rising Star'. From the bell, the 2-year-old at odds of 9-5 was prepared for two turns. Making the pace, Nash controlled it into the first turn, kept to the task up the backstretch and he motored home a winner by multiple lengths in the end as Justifreak (Justify) was second. Pulling on even terms with the early pacesetter exiting the far turn, Grazia inched ahead rounding the final turn, dispensed of that rival in early stretch and was 3 1/4 lengths clear of She's a Tempest (Connect) at the wire. The winner is a half to Union Gables (Speightstown), GSP, $115,980. Out of MGSP Tonasah, Grazia also has a year-younger brother by Munnings and a foal sister by American Pharoah. 11. 4th-Churchill Downs, $121,125, Msw, 11-12, 2yo, 5 1/2f, 1:03.27, ft, 7 3/4 lengths. MYSTIK DAN (c, 2, Goldencents–Ma'am, by Colonel John) broke quickly in his debut Oct. 22 at Keeneland, but lost the lead down the lane to finish second. Tabbed as the 4-5 choice here, the bay colt tracked the pacesetter from second up the backstretch. Making his move to the outside around the far turn, the Ken McPeek trainee built up a head of steam and really poured it on to win by 7 3/4 lengths over Eusebius (City of Light). Out of an extended female family which includes MGSW Summer Front (War Front) and his half-sister GISW Laragh (Tapit), the winner's dam is responsible for a yearling filly named Yes Ma'am (Unified) and foaled filly Apr. 2 Ford's Ma'am (Knicks Go). 12. Trainer Bob Baffert went 0-for-9 in Breeders' Cup races, and four months ago he received his dis-invitation to the 150th GI Kentucky Derby in the form of an extension of his original two-year suspension from properties owned by the gaming company Churchill Downs, Inc. (CDI). But neither the Breeders' Cup blanking nor the Derby banishment should be taken as indications that the Hall-of-Fame conditioner is running low on horsepower, particularly in the 2-year-old division. A pair of Baffert juveniles on the first two days of the Del Mar meeting this past weekend underscored that his stable will continue to churn out a deep rotation of Triple Crown aspirants, although it remains to be seen how they might arrive at the first of the spring Classics, whether in the form of a switch to another conditioner, or under Baffert's own name if and when another court fight against CDI materializes. Second-time starter Coach Prime (Quality Road) caught the eye and earned 'TDN Rising Star' status with a 7 1/4-length blowout victory over a mile Nov. 10. The $1.7-million KEESEP colt for Zedan Racing Stables was pinballed at the break from post nine, but the 7-5 favorite settled into a comfortable midpack stalking spot while three wide through the clubhouse turn behind quick opening fractions of :21.44 and :44.94. Flavien Prat guided Coach Prime to within two lengths of the lead while on the inside a half-mile from home, and the colt continued “on hold” while waiting for running room as multiple pace-pressers took turns chipping at the lead. He shifted out to the three path at the quarter pole, just before a wall of four at the front split into two turning for home, and Coach Prime sliced on through between them while still in hand. Beyond a single crack of the crop after cresting the eighth pole unopposed, Prat largely hand-rode Coach Prime through the final furlong. The 1:37.18 final clocking and low-looking 75 Beyer Speed Figure can be chalked up as artifacts of this colt not nearing full extension and being geared down in the late stages. Stablemate Pilot Commander (Justify), a $145,000 KEEJAN RNA and a $700,000 OBSMAR buy for CSLR Racing Partners, impressed with a debut six-furlong win at 13-10 odds under Juan Hernandez the following afternoon. This Baffert trainee shot straight to the front, conceded the lead to an inside challenger a half-mile out, reclaimed it with ease a furlong later, edged away at the top of the stretch, and successfully repulsed a challenge from the third-favorite in the betting while building his winning margin to 2 1/4 lengths in 1:09.82. Pilot Commander's Beyer fig was not yet available at deadline for this column. Juvy jock streak stopped at 13… The target at the top of the totem pole for the 2024 Derby, is, of course, 'TDN Rising Star' Fierceness (City of Light), who trounced the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile field by 6 1/4 lengths en route to a 105 Beyer victory. In the six months between now and the first Saturday in May, prepare to be frequently reminded how poor a metric winning the 1 1/16-miles championship race for 2-year-olds is in predicting prowess at age three going 10 furlongs. Since the advent of the Breeders' Cup in 1984, Juvenile winners have accounted for only two Kentucky Derby wins from 39 runnings (Street Sense in 2007 and Nyquist in 2016). Second- and third-place Juvenile horses don't fare much better. Those 78 horses have produced just two Derby victories, by Alysheba (third in the 1986 Juvenile) and Spend A Buck (third in the 1984 Juvenile). Oddly enough, another “drought” type of streak in the Juvenile–this one relating to jockeys–was snapped when John Velazquez scored aboard Fierceness in this year's edition. Dating to 2010, when Velazquez last won the Juvenile aboard Uncle Mo, 13 different riders had taken turns winning the championship dirt race for 2-year-old males. Of all the Breeders' Cup races, that was the longest such active streak of different jockeys winning without a rider repeating in the sequence. You'd have to be a true trivia wizard to recount the complete list from memory. Following Velazquez in 2010, the winning Juvenile jockeys were, in order, Ramon Dominguez, Rosie Napravnik, Martin Garcia, Kent Desormeaux, Mario Gutierrez, Julien Leparoux, Jose Ortiz, Joel Rosario, Flavien Prat, Luis Saez, Mike Smith and Irad Ortiz, Jr. Bravo homecoming Joe Bravo has switched his tack back to Florida after being based in Southern California the past several seasons. It's a homecoming in terms of where the 52-year-old veteran first started riding (at Calder Race Course in 1988), and also in terms of the house Bravo owns in Ft. Lauderdale. “I loved racing in California,” Bravo told the Del Mar notes team. “I was really grateful to be around some good people, but I just got a little homesick and wanted to come back and be closer to my family.” After stints at Calder and Philadelphia Park, Bravo made his mark for 30-plus years as “Jersey Joe,” dominating the standings at Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands. He generally rode at Gulfstream Park during the winter months when New Jersey racing went dark for the season. “I've been away from family and friends I grew up with my whole life and that was behind the decision as a whole,” Bravo said. “I just hope everyone understands it's more of a personal than a business decision. I might regret it. I might be thankful.” That “Whatever will be, will be,” attitude was evident–quite literally–in Bravo's second mount back at Gulfstream. That's because Bravo won the third race Sunday aboard Whateverwilbewilbe (Tapiture), a second-time starter who paid $13.80 to win. 13. By Jonny Turner Balfour trainers Shane Matheson and Lisa Barrie are enjoying the calm before the storm. The couple have been enjoying a strong run of success recently which continued when Abadabadoo ran to victory at Wyndham yesterday. Though their horses are officially trained by Matheson, Barrie is an integral part of their training operation which they run alongside their crutching business. With summer approaching, Matheson and Barrie’s days are about to get longer as they work on farms across Northern Southland. With horses to train as well, the couple are in for a busy period. “We do some really, really long hours, it’s not too bad at the moment because a lot of people have been lambing and tailing, but we start back in December,” Barrie said. “We go from dusk till dawn and later – we’ve got outside lights.” “Our son Tristan’s been a major help but he’s the way back to Wellington at the beginning of December, so it’ll just be Shane and me again.” Abadabadoo initially joined Matheson and Barrie to have somewhere to be turned out. But that progressed into the mare being a pacemaker for other horses in the stable, before she was eventually aimed at a return to the track. Matheson, Barrie and a group of their family members race Abadabadoo on lease from her owner, Jason Enright. “We threw some shoes on her and jogged her up and Jason said you guys can just race her, so we’re racing her,” Barrie said. “She didn’t go too good to start with, so we just used her as a galloping pacemaker and yeah she improved from there.” Following a mammoth break away from racing, Abadabadoo’s fitness has improved with every run she’s had this spring. “She was two and a half years away from the racetrack from her first start back,” Barrie said. “It’s taken a bit to try and get her there, but now she’s there we will try and keep her there.” Abadabadoo led throughout for driver Sarah O’Reilly to win. Galleons Future ran into second for the Robert Wilson stable, making it a race quinella for Balfour’s only two licenced horse trainers in race 6. View the full article

The March foal was consigned by Clonmult on behalf of breeders Richard and Mai Nolan of Old Court Stud. “We were advised by Donal [White] to send Bee Yanka to Blue Bresil and she has visited the sire three times now,” the couple said jointly. “The stock that has come from her has been so magnificent, and we just kept going back to the stallion–she is an amazing breeder.” Kieran Shields and his daughter Kate went to €67,000 for Lot 20, the Blue Bresil colt out of the Listed-placed Rolanna (Ire) (Strategic Prince {Ire}), from the Thistletown Stud consignment. “He is a good walker, by the right sire, is a good size and he has been bought as a pinhooking prospect,” Kate said. Coolamurry Stud consigned Lot 80, a colt by Walk In The Park (Ire) out of the Aura About You (Ire) (Supreme Leader), who was bought by pinhook purchaser Michael Fitzpatrick, signing as J C Bloodstock, for €60,000. Overall of the 233 lots catalogued, 139 were listed as sold, a 19 percent dip from the 233 reported sold during the opening session a year ago. The gross receipts of €1,625,500, a 31 percent drop over the figure of €2,355,100 the corresponding session from 2022. The average price of €11,694 dipped 15 percent from €13,773 in 2022 with the median of €9,000 tumbling 22 percent €11,500. The November NH Sale continues Tuesday at 10 a.m. with the second session. 15. Jockey Abel Cedillo will pack up his tack from Del Mar and move east for the winter to Turfway Park for their meeting that starts Nov. 29. He has every intention of returning to the seaside oval next summer, but says the timing just seemed right to try something new. “I just want to go because I've never gone out of California,” Cedillo says. “I'm still young so I don't want to wait until I'm too old to make the move. I'll take my chance right now.” Cedillo, who has captured riding titles at Golden Gate, Santa Anita and Del Mar, returned to racing after a riding accident sidelined him early during this summer's Del Mar meet. He suffered a broken bone in his neck and was sidelined for the remainder of the meet. He avoided having surgery and instead went through a rigorous rehab. “It took six weeks,” Cedillo says. “I was working out in the gym by myself and doing my routine. Sometimes in the morning I get up and I'm a little sore. But soon as I start working I feel better. I feel a hundred percent now.” The post Abel Cedillo To Winter At Turfway Park appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 16. The Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will host its second annual Holiday Giving Campaign beginning Nov. 28 and running through Dec. 31. The 2023 campaign, designed to increase awareness for accredited Thoroughbred aftercare and to raise funds for the accredited organizations responsible for ensuring a quality life for equine athletes after their racing careers, is set to follow the success of last year's inaugural campaign which raised over $180,000. “Our Thoroughbred horses provide us with so much, and each donation to the campaign goes a long way in supporting a network of 86 accredited organizations. Our organizations do an amazing job of taking care of the retired racehorses, so as we prepare for the holiday season, I hope that we can all simplify our gift giving and donate to Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance,” said TAA President Jeffrey Bloom. Throughout the campaign, Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance will announce new daily match sponsors with some of the most prominent names in racing. Each sponsor will match all donations up to a specified amount for his or her day. Match sponsors will be announced daily in various industry publications along with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance website, social media, and email. Individuals interested in donating can do so here beginning Nov. 28. 17. There will, rightly, be much attention paid to the Niarchos draft at the Goffs November Sale as the family operation undergoes restructuring, but there is one boutique dispersal which also deserves proper perusal. Manfred and Edith Hellwig of German-based Gestut Hony-Hof bring 11 mares and nine foals to market though the Castlebridge Consignment, many of whom offer access to one of the best German families of recent decades. In 2000, the Hellwigs bought from Gestut Karlshof a yearling filly by Monsun (Ger), a full-sister to that year's G1 Deutsches Derby winner Samum (Ger), who would later be named Salve Regina (Ger) and go on to claim her own Classic laurels in the G1 Preis der Diana. The family's place in German bloodstock history has been even more deeply carved since then. In 2006, another full-brother, Schiaparelli (Ger), brought a second Deutsches Derby home, and while their sister Sanwa (Ger) didn't make it to the track herself, she atoned for that by producing yet another Derby winner, Sea The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Stars {Ire}). Salve Regina herself has established a dynasty at Hony-Hof, the central German farm “close to nowhere”, which includes the GII Ballston Spa H. winner Salve Germania (Ger) (Peintre Celebre), whose full-sister Salve Haya (Ire) is catalogued as Lot 1148. Six of the 11 mares to be offered at Goffs are Salve Regina's descendants, as are four of the foals. “That whole family has been so good to us, and also to Karlshof,” says Simon Minch, the longstanding manager of Gestut Hony-Hof. “The number of group runners they've brought out of it and black-type horses, it's like a gift that keeps on giving. It's a family that just doesn't seem to go out of fashion.” He adds, “The one thing you have to say about that family is that it gets good, honest, tough horses. They don't wilt easily, they normally go on and have good, long careers to them. You know, the rarely-see-a-vet type.” Leading the draft of mares on the Friday of the sale is Sea The Sunrise (Ger) (Lot 1139), a Sea The Stars granddaughter of Salve Regina offered in foal to Gleneagles (Ire), and her weanling filly by Arizona (Ire) will be sold as Lot 525 on the Tuesday. Minch continues, “A lot of that family aren't that big are very, very good. Like Salve Regina herself. She was the height of the average coffee table. Same with the dam of Sea The Moon, she was even smaller. Salve Del Rio was a two-year-old winner for us, and he was fourth in the German Derby, and third in a Group 2. He was barely 15 hands, but he was as tough as nails. They don't wilt easily, they normally go on and have good, long careers to them. You know, the rarely-see-a-vet type. “And Sea the Sunrise, she's also an interesting outcross as well. She's a lovely mare and she's got a lot of potential to her. You're buying a lot of good stallion stuff in there.” It's not all about the Salve Regina clan in the Hony-Hof draft though. For a start, the horse that has brought the farm the most acclaim in recent years is the G1 Prix du Cadran winner Princess Zoe (Ger) (Jukebox Jury {Ire}). She too isn't that big and is as tough as they come, but she's from a different family altogether. Her half-sister Palace Girl (GB) (Areion {Ger}) sells as Lot 1142 and is in foal to Churchill (Ire) with a yearling by Adlerflug (Ger) on the ground. Her filly foal by Isfahan (Ger) is Lot 524. Then there's the German champion two-year-old, Ocean Fantasy (Fr) (Make Believe {GB}), a rare foal purchase by the stud who went on to win the G3 Preis der Winterkonigin and finish placed in the G2 Diana Trial. Selling as Lot 1141, she is in foal to Lope De Vega (Ire) while her filly foal from the first crop of St Marks's Basilica (Fr) could bring some interest late in the day on Tuesday as the final lot in the ring (532). Her dam's half-sister La Mehana (Fr) (Al Wukair {Ire}) is a treble Listed winner who was placed in the G1 Prix de Royallieu since the catalogue was printed. “There's another very interesting family we have though, that shouldn't be overlooked,” says Minch. “It's been my pet project, and that's Wish You Well and Westfalica family.” Those two named mares (Lots 1140 and 1149), by Soldier Hollow (GB) and Areion (Ger) respectively, are both great-granddaughters of the Oaks winner Jet Ski Lady (Vaguely Noble). He continues, “We decided to go a different direction with that family. To go back to 1,600, 1,400-metre horses, with One Cool Cat and Areion and things like that. And the bit of speed back on it has paid dividends, and it has started giving black type for us again. Westfalica's two-year-old [Wikinger] won the big €200,000 sales race in Baden-Baden. So that was pleasing, and also from that family is Words Of Peace, who was fourth in the Winterkonigin, the top two-year-old race for fillies in Germany. “So that's coming alive again, and then Wish You Well is a listed winner herself and her first foal by Caravaggio had one start and ran a grand race to be second. But interestingly the winner came out from that and won the sales race down in Munich recently. So the form of that race is looking pretty solid. They're both very young mares with plenty going for them. Westfalica has a foal by Sioux Nation and Wish You Well has a Starspangledbanner filly.” The advancing age of the Hellwigs, who have had broodmares for 35 years, has prompted the dispersal of the operation which has been conducted in the true tradition of owner-breeders. “Everything was bred for their own racing stable,” Minch explains. “It was only in the last one or two years we started selling a couple because we kind of knew it was coming to the end, but unfortunately it's come a bit quicker than anyone expected or wished for. “They started off in North Germany and they were having a bit of fun, a hobby really, with a cattle farm and a few broodmares,” says Minch, who has managed Hony-Hof since 2005. “And then Salve Regina who won the Oaks for them. Mr Hellwig wanted to sell her, because of course there were offers, but Mrs Hellwig basically put her foot down and said, 'No, we're going to start breeding properly now.' They bought Gestot Hony-Hof in the late nineties.” The 11 mares going to sale represents the largest number the farm has ever had at one time. The mares have been in Ireland to foal at Joe Hernon's Castletown Stud and have remained there in anticipation of their sales date. “I'm very grateful to Joe, who I've known for years since I worked at Castle Hyde Stud, and to everyone at Goffs for their help in arranging everything,” Minch says. “And Theresa Lotz has been working here at Hony-Hof since she was 18. She did her apprenticeship with us and then she stayed on for the last 12 years. She's been absolutely magnificent in the amount of work she's put in. The whole operation just wouldn't run without Theresa.” There will be poignant days for himself, too, as the sale gets underway. Minch says, “People have asked me, 'what are you going to do after the last mare goes to the ring?' And I said, 'I'm going to go down to the bar and have a double whiskey.' That's what I'll probably do. It's going to be an emotional moment, but we've known it's been coming for a year now and our job is to get this done and organised for the Hellwigs with the best possible result for them.” The post Curtain Falls on Boutique Hony-Hof Operation at Goffs appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions. 19. It was a stakes double for Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) on Sunday, as Ho O Emmy's (Jpn) won the G3 Fukushima Kinen, and Brede Weg (Jpn) became his latest Group 1 winner with a victory in the Queen Elizabeth Cup in Kyoto. She is the first 3-year-old filly to win the race since Mozu Katchan (Jpn) (Harbingers {GB}) in 2017, and also became the QEC victress with the fewest starts with five. Despite the presence of last year's winner Geraldina (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}), the Sunday Racing 3-year-old garnered favouritism at 7-5 in her first start beyond 2000 metres. Hopping at the start, Brede Wag perched next to the fence as Art House (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) carved out fractions of :49 for the first 800 metres and 1:37.50 for the 1600 metres while pressed by Roselite (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}). Like the winner, Geraldina was not cleanly away from the stalls, but unlike Brede Weg's small hop, she attempted to kickstart her career over jumps, catching a fair bit of air. As a result, the intended frontrunner was instead briefly last and Ryan Moore had his hands full as she was three deep into the first turn. By the 600-metre mark she was just behind Brede Weg's, but several paths deeper into the course. Brede Weg came off the fence for her run entering the straight, but treaded water for a bit before shifting gears. By the 200-metre mark she had dead aim on Art House, with Harper (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}) also rallying strongly on her outside. Rouge Eveil (Jpn) (Just A Way {Jpn}) also flashed home strongly up the inside as the wire neared. At the line it was Brede Weg by three-quarters of a length over Rouge Eveil, who was a neck to the good of Harper. Geraldina's run flattened late and she ran on to be fifth, a half-length behind Lilac (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}). “I was a bit worried about the soft ground but it was no problem for her,” said pilot Christophe Lemaire. “We couldn't break well but were able to travel in good position behind Harper. She was calm, responded well throughout the race and pulled away strongly with her explosive kick.” Second on debut last August, she graduated by six lengths at Tokyo in February and added another victory, this time over 2000 metres, at that venue in June. Brede Weg was runner-up in the G2 Rose S. at Hanshin in September. Pedigree Notes Brede Weg is the 46th stakes winner and 32nd group winner for her sire, who stands at Shadai Stallion Station. She is also his ninth top-level scorer and one of four Group 1 winners by the son of King Kamehameha (Jpn) out of mares by Sunday Silence or one of his sons. Inner Urge missed to Lord Kanaloa for 2021, but currently has a Saturnalia (Jpn) yearling filly and foaled a colt by Harbinger this term. Inner Urge is also a full-sister to the Japanese Champion 3-Year-Old Filly Mikki Queen (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who won both the G1 Yushun Himba and G1 Shuka Sho. The winner's second dam is the well-traveled Musical Way (Fr) (Gold Away {Ire}), who won a brace of French group races and was also placed in two editions of the G1 Premio Lydia Tesio as well as the 2007 G1 Hong Kong Cup. Musical Way brought 300,000gns from Katsumi Yoshida out of the Tattersalls December Mares Sale in 2008. 20. Markus Klug trainee Wonderful Boy (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Wonderful Gorl {Ger}, by Areion {Ger}), who was last seen shedding maiden status at Cologne in September, stamped his authority on Sunday's G3 Herzog von Ratibor-Rennen at Krefeld and hit the line with a wide-margin buffer for a career high in the 8 1/2-furlong test. The 17-5 chance, who had earlier poster an Aug. 26 debut third at Baden-Baden, was swiftly into stride from the inside stall and claimed an immediate lead. Allowed an inch of rein soon after turning for home, he was beyond recall approaching the final furlong and geared down in the closing stages to easily outclass Novemberrose (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by 10 lengths. Gestut Park Wiedingen's 13-5 favourite. Flamingo Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) was unable to land any kind of blow and finished 16 lengths adrift in third. “I was hoping to be placed and am a bit surprised just how well he ran,” said winning rider Andrasch Starke. “He worked well enough at home, but not to suggest this kind of performance. He is still developing and, on this heavy going, he ran like a really good horse. He was quite keen in the early stages, but then settled well and eventually responded beautifully. I always thought he was a horse for next year and I think we can really look forward to 2024 with him.” Pedigree Notes Wonderful Boy, who becomes the 18th pattern-race winner for his sire, is the lone reported foal produced by Listed Grosser Soldier Hollow Preis runner-up Wonderful Gorl (Ger) (Areion {Ger}), herself kin to MGSW G2 Union-Rennen victor Wonderful Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). 25. Selangor Turf Club in Malaysia, a regular purchaser of New Zealand bred and sourced horses, have announced a prizemoney increase across all race classes in 2024. The ’life blood’ of horse racing is the prize money offered to its winning owners. It is simply the reward for investing in a thoroughbred. Selangor Turf Club (SLTC) has worked relentlessly since the pre-pandemic years in order to improve the prospects of the thoroughbred racing industry. However, the Covid-19 outbreak dealt a devastating blow to the industry and the world at large. There is no better moment than now to evaluate and adjust our strategy in response to the rapidly changing industry landscape. SLTC intends to implement a number of new measures which it hopes will boost the country’s racing industry and propel the Club forward as a significant player in the region. SLTC will soon embark on managing and operating its own wagering system. This is expected to provide SLTC with the opportunity of increasing its racing turnover. With greater turnover, the Club will enjoy an increase in income which may be channeled back in terms of higher prize money in the future. By improving the prize money structure, owners will be encouraged to invest in the sport. It will also make it more viable for owners to import better quality horses and to race them in SLTC. There is also a positive feedback loop as quality racehorses attract greater following among racing enthusiasts. This in turn translates to higher betting turnover. In addition, an increase in the number of horses in training will be a boost to our trainers. The Committee is cognizant that a Racing jurisdiction is judged on many levels. One significant criteria is the classic races which are held in that jurisdiction. The SLTC Committee is striving to ensure that Selangor’s best races are admitted into the International Cataloguing Standards and International Statistics (Blue Book) through attaining an accepted Group, Listed or Black Type accreditation. In order to achieve this long-term goal, the prize money on offer needs to reach a certain level or at the very least, be on an upward trajectory. Consistent with this aim, SLTC is pleased to announce that effective from 1st January 2024, the prize money for its races will be increased as follows : Classes Prize money RM (current) RM (Year 2024) Tunku Gold Cup 150,000 200,000 Selangor Gold Cup 150,000 200,000 Piala Emas Sultan Selangor 150,000 200,000 Sports Toto Supreme Challenge Cup 100,000 120,000 Class 1 (80 & Above) 39,000 60,000 Class 2 (71 – 89)37,000 50,000 Class 3 (57 – 74) 34,500 40,000 Class 4A (44 – 61) 30,500 35,000 Class 4B (44 – 55) 26,000 30,000 Class 5A (43 & Below) 18,500 25,000 Class 5B (35 & Below) 14,500 20,000 Restricted Maiden / 3YO Race 39,000 50,000 Maiden / Open Maiden 24,500 25,000 In order to promote a series of races for younger horses, the Club is working with various international bloodstock companies such as New Zealand Bloodstock and Magic Millions to re-establish the Juvenile 3YO and 4YO Series. From 2024 and onwards, more black type races will be added to the current list of Black type races. There will be an average of one Black type race per month in the 2024 MRA racing calendar. It is hoped that this will enhance the line-up of events for the 3 Malaysia Turf Clubs. Towards this objective, SLTC is pleased to announce the following additional Black type races*: Race name Prize money in RM (Year 24/25) (1) 3Year-Old series 1100m 100,000 (2) 3Year-Old series 1400m 100,000 (3) 3Year-Old series 1600m 100,000 (4) 4Year-Old series 1200m 100,000 (5) 4Year-Old series 1400m 100,000 (6) 4Year-Old series 1700m 100,000 (7) Chairman Trophy ( 5YO >), 1400m 100,000 (8) Novelty Excellence Trophy, Track 2, 1175m 80,000 (9) Novelty Excellence Trophy, Track 2, 1775m 80,000 Horse racing has existed in Malaysia for over 130 years.
