Trainer Mike Moroney is happy to back the talent of his three-year-old filly Coeur Volante (NZ) (Proisir) despite almost a month between runs in Saturday’s Gr.1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield. Coeur Volante has won three out of her four starts and kicked off this campaign with a win in the Gr.2 Champagne Stakes at The Valley on September 29. She then won the Gr.2 Tranquil Star Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on October 21 and hasn’t started since. “She’s a naturally gifted filly. We considered giving her another run in between, but we decided she didn’t need it,” Moroney said. Moroney said they put Coeur Volante away for the Thousand Guineas after she won her second start, which was over 1300 metres at Sandown Hillside on June 14. “As soon as she won we put the Thousand Guineas on her agenda, so we put her out as we knew this race had been put back,” Moroney said. “It has been a bit of a job keeping her up as she only had a short break over winter. Whatever she does now she’ll be better in the autumn.” Moroney said he was thankful Blake Shinn had decided to start his suspension for whip use after the Caulfield meeting. Coeur Volante was sold by Prima Park at the 2022 New Zealand Bloodstock Book 1 Sale for $90,000 to Paul Moroney Bloodstock and had some barrier trials in New Zealand as a juvenile under the guidance of Ballymore co-trainer Pam Gerard. Trelawney Stud graduate Lim’s Kosciuszko (Kermadec) stamped himself as one of the all-time greats in Singapore racing after he narrowly defeated Dream Alliance by a short head in the S$1 million Singapore Gold Cup (2000m) on Saturday. To his credit, Lim’s Kosciuszko, who carried the top weight of 58kgs in the handicap field of 16, fought hard on the rails to win with sheer determination from Dream Alliance, who only had 51kgs on his back. That win gave the six-year-old son of Kermadec his seventh feature win, albeit his first win over the 10 furlongs in the third Leg of the Singapore Triple Crown series. His previous wins at the top level included two Lion City Cup (1200m), two Raffles Cup and the 2023 Kranji Mile all over the 1600m and the 2022 Singapore Derby over 1800m. Lim’s Kosciuszko has put himself in the rarest of air by winning feature races over a more varied distance than any other gallopers in over 180 years of racing history at the Singapore Turf Club. But it was not easy as jockey Marc Lerner had to use petrol early from the widest barrier 16 on Lim’s Kosciuszko before settling on the flank of leader Maxima into the first bend. Once the early work was done, the experienced Frenchman was able to settle the heavy favourite in the backstraight and when Real Efecto made a mid-race move to keep the pressure on the leader, Lerner was able to find cover one-back on the fence before straightening for home. Lerner wasted no time looking for runs by barging his way into the clear at the 420m and quickly had Maxima’s measure after he hit the front at the 300m. Yet, Dream Alliance also almost immediately raced up to his shoulders and it was a monumental battle in the final 250m. Dream Alliance headed Lim’s Kosciuszko on numerous occasion over the final furlong and given the seven-kilo weight advantage on the Tim Fitzsimmons-trained five-year-old’s side, a boilover win looked to be on the cards with the reigning Horse of the Year seemingly on the canvas. But like all champions do, Lim’s Kosciuszko found something when it mattered and under furious riding by Lerner in the final 50m, he lifted to win by a short head. The drama was not even close to being over as after Lerner weighed in, a protest was lodged by Queiroz, citing interference in the straight. Thankfully – especially for those with an interest in the first horse over the line – it did not take long before the protest was dismissed and the happy winning connections had both hands officially on the most revered trophy in Singapore racing. The winner clocked 2 min 0.67secs for the 2000m on the Short Course and Lim’s Kosciuszko’s 17th win in 21 starts took career earnings to just under $2.5 million for his connections. But these wins are bigger than just prizemoney and an emotional Meagher was almost lost for words to describe Saturday’s heroic win. “It was amazing! What can I say?” said the Australian conditioner. “I can train him (Lim’s Kosciuszko) to be fit, to be sound, to be happy, but I can’t train him to be tough. “When it’s all said and done, that’s what won him the race today. He jumped from gate 16, carried the top weight and had every right to get beat in that final furlong. “But he just toughed out the finish and that’s what makes champion horses.” Meagher was also full of praise for his opposition, Lerner and his stable staff after the historic win. “That was a race and half,” he continued. “Dream Alliance was super in defeat. (Trainer) Tim (Fitzsimmons) did a fantastic job with him and he’s a horse with a big future for sure. “Marc was great today, in fact for the last few weeks. He hadn’t ridden the horse until (regular jockey) CC (Wong Chin Chuen) got suspended, so for him to ride him like he did today from that gate was special. “My only instructions were to win the start and cross, then it was up to him (Lerner). Super ride, really. “The stable staff has been so important as well. All of them, but especially (groom) Sham (Samsuri Bin Saadon) who spends all his time with him, and with me looking over his shoulder, that’s not easy! Also a shout-out to CC who rode him exclusively for the last ten months or so.” For Lerner, the feature win capped off a wonderful year of riding for the Lim’s Stable but like Meagher, he was just in awe of a special horse. “The horse! Just the horse! He is a superstar!” said Lerner. “He jumped super and put himself right where we wanted to be. Maxima was a good horse to follow and when he (Lim’s Kosciuszko) relaxed mid-race, I knew he would be hard to beat. “Dream Alliance had his head in front most of the final 300m, but my horse kept finding more and like they say, good horses overcome everything. He’s a good horse. “Every jockey dreams of winning races like this. I had a super year for (owner) Mr Lim (Siah Mong) but the only thing missing was winning a big race for the Lim’s Stable and Daniel. “It’s a massive thrill for me.” Bred by Brent and Cherry Taylor’s Trelawney Stud, Lim’s Kosciuszko was passed in at the New Zealand Bloodstock Sales and then sold privately after winning his first and only trial in New Zealand when under the care of Clayton Chipperfield. It completed a big Saturday for Trelawney Stud, who also bred Gr. 1 Champions Mile (1600m) heroine Pride Of Jenni. View the full article

Debutant Velocious (Written Tycoon) lived up to her name when she downed a handy field of juveniles in the first race at Te Rapa on Saturday. Carrying the moniker that means speedy or fast, Velocious was just that as she ran down race favourites Red Sea and Bellatrix Star in the closing stages of the Virtual Print Design & Branding 2YO (1000m) in the hands of in-form rider Sam Spratt. Spratt had the daughter of Written Tycoon towards the rear of the field in the early stages as Red Sea set a solid pace up front after winning a four-way battle for the early lead. Red Sea and Bellatrix Star looked likely to fight out the finish as their closest pursuers dropped away early in the run home, however Spratt was winding Velocious up out wide and she dashed to the front at the 100m to race away for a comfortable win. Trainer Stephen Marsh, who was at Riccarton to saddle up a big team including Burn To Shine in the Gr.1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m), was thrilled with the effort and the professionalism of the win. “We did think the draw would play against her but Sam gave her the perfect ride,” Marsh said. “She (Velocious) was very professional in all she did and when Sam pulled her out for her run she really showed a good turn of speed to put them away. “She is nominated for the Karaka Million 2YO (1200m) and that will get her in the field so we can pick and choose what we do to get her to the race. “She is very well bred so getting some black type on her page is also important so I think we might go to the Wakefield Stakes (Gr.2, 1100m) at Trentham next month and then we can give her a freshen before the Karaka Million.” Raced by the Go Racing Burrata Syndicate, Velocious was purchased by Go Racing Syndications boss Albert Bosma for $190,000 out of the Inglewood Stud Book 1 draft at Karaka earlier in the year. She is a half-sister to former useful two-year-old Mozzarella and closely related to Australian stakes winners Loved Up and Liesele. Marsh didn’t have to wait long to double his winning tally for the day as Fashionista powered home from last on the corner to win comfortably in rating 65 company over 2200m in the hands of Courtney Barnes. “To see a three-year-old filly winning over ground before Christmas is very encouraging,” Marsh said. “We have the Sir Patrick Hogan Stakes (Gr.2, 2050m) at Pukekohe on New Year’s Day as her target and maybe the New Zealand Oaks (Gr.1, 2400m) after that.” The stable was also amongst the action at Riccarton with Nest Egg taking out the Listed Nautical Boat Insurance Metropolitan Trophy (2600m) to cement his favourite’s tag for next week’s Gr.3 Martin Collins New Zealand Cup (3200m). Progressive Central Districts mare Kana (NZ) (Tivaci) showed her class in defying the early track bias to score an impressive victory in the Scenic Hotel Group Premier (1100m) at Riccarton Park on Saturday. Through much of the earlier card, on-speed runners were largely featuring in the finish, but jockey Johnathan Parkes was undeterred and stuck to his plan when settling three-back on the rail with the Tivaci four-year-old. Parkes looked to take an inside gap at the 300m which rapidly closed, forcing the Central Districts hoop to rebalance the mare, but once straightened she showed an electric turn-of-foot to bolt past pacemaker Belle’s Echo to score by one-and-a-quarter lengths. Prepared by Awapuni horseman Peter Didham, Kana produced an impressive six-length victory at Trentham last start before making the trip south with next Saturday’s Listed Lindauer Stewards Stakes (1200m) in mind. “She’s really gone another level today,” Didham said. “I did say to Johnny (Parkes) that they were winning in front but we can’t change our pattern, we have to keep to what we’re doing. “I was getting a bit worried again because she gets herself into a bit of trouble playing around with her head and mouth, we’re still just trying to iron those kinks out but it was a super impressive win. “I’m just so pleased there was a group of owners that bought into her, they had a bit of faith in myself so she’s done really well for them.” Kana holds a nomination for the 1200m sprint feature on the final day of New Zealand Cup Week, and Didham sees further distance potential for the mare following her campaign grand-final. “After this trip down here and we take her back for a spell, she might get up over 1400m if we can get her to relax,” he said. Parkes was delighted to see the mare deliver in the South, albeit with the difficult run to the post. “It was similar to last time I rode her at Trentham, we sort of had to weave in and out that day as well but once she did get into the clear air she’s been too good for them again,” he said. “She’s doing everything right, hopefully she pulls up well and can come back here on the last day.” Out of O’Reilly mare Tick Tock, Kana was a $65,000 purchase out of Landsdowne Park’s Book 1 draft at the 2020 Karaka Yearling Sales by Ian Middleton under his Exempt Bloodstock banner. Promising filly Grail Seeker (NZ) (Iffraaj) showed she could well be a force in some of the better summer three-year-old distance events with an effortless performance to break her maiden status at Te Rapa. The daughter of Iffraaj had caught the eye when finishing off strongly to finish fourth over 1300m at Taupo and lapped up the increase to a 1600m journey on Saturday. Positioned nicely in the trail by rider Niranjan Parmar, Grail Seeker burst away from her rivals in the home straight to cruise home by nearly five lengths and justify some heavy support on the tote which saw her installed the $2 favourite for the contest. Co-trainer Andrew Scott, who prepares the filly in partnership with Lance O’Sullivan, admitted there was plenty of pre-race confidence in the chances of their charge. “We came into raceday with a lot of confidence after the way she went Taupo last time,” Scott said. “She really made up good ground that day and we knew she would be even more suited up to the mile on a good track. “Her work has been very pleasing and you could see she had taken a lot out of that run. “She got a good run today and when she found clear air she finished off very strongly, which is encouraging with what we are looking at for her over the coming months.” A return to Te Rapa in early December is on the cards for Grail Seeker, with Scott keen to see her continue to improve with higher honours on offer over the summer. “She still has a lot to learn but every time she steps out she looks better and better,” he said. “At this stage we are looking at the Eagle Memorial (Listed, 1500m) on the 2nd of December here at Te Rapa and then we will reassess after that. “Her racing style suggests she will get further so some of those nice middle distance races for the three-year-old fillies over the summer could well be on the radar. “It is a good time of the year to win a race with a filly and now we have that maiden victory out of the way I think she can really go ahead from here.” Raced by Trevor Clarke and Chris Jones, Grail Seeker was a $130,000 purchase by Rudy Liefting under his Kakapo Lodge banner from her breeder Jamieson Park’s draft during the Book 1 Sale at Karaka in 2022. Her dam Starwish is a Redoute’s Choice daughter of Gr.1 Australia Stakes (1200m) winner Stella Cadente and she comes from a family that includes stakes winners Deep Image, Brilliant Bisc and outstanding Hong Kong sprinter Dashing Fellow. LEXINGTON, KY – The Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale entered its Book 3 section with a quietly steady session Saturday in Lexington. Leading the day's trade was the 4-year-old broodmare Chameleon (Candy Ride {Arg}), who sold for $425,000 to the bid of Terri Burch of Stoneway Farm. The mare, in foal to Practical Joke, was bred and consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm. During the session, 243 horses grossed $15,012,500 for an average of $61,780 and a median of $50,000. The average was down 27% from last year's opening Book 3 session and the median was lower by 23.08%. With 80 horses reported as not sold, the buy-back rate was 24.77%. It was 26.63% a year ago. There were just six horses to sell for $200,000 or over Saturday at Keeneland, compared to 16 a year ago. “It shows how polarized our sales are right now because I came over here today and RNA'd them for $20,000 and then we sold one for $290,000,” said Tommy Eastham, whose Legacy Bloodstock offered two of the horses to reach $200,000 on the day. “The market is good, but it's really selective. It's very polarized. It just makes us better horsemen. We need to be better consignors, take better care of our horses because little penalties that you used to be able to get away with, that were maybe 20% penalty in the past, are fatal for your sale now. I hope it gets a little better and spreads out a little bit, but if you tick all the proverbial boxes, it's still really good.” Weanlings from the first crop of Yaupon have been in demand all week and two colts by the Spendthrift stallion led the foals Saturday, selling for $220,000 to Brownsboro Racing and for $205,000 to Peter O'Callaghan's Cavalier Bloodstock. While the weanling market has been competitive all week at Keeneland, O'Callaghan said he has noticed a drop-off in quality from years past. “Unfortunately, the quality is not here,” O'Callaghan said. “We used to have a big list of horses in Book 3 at Keeneland November every year, but we are in single digits this year. There are not as many people offering the good weanlings as there used to be.” O'Callaghan continued, “It's clear they are holding on to them. But if you're smart, selling the weanlings is a smart business. There are a lot of end-users here, the competition is not nearly as strong as the yearling market and the vetting–there is no comparison to how stringent it is at the yearling sales. I'm starting to think I should start selling a few myself. It's been a hot trade for the quality, there's just not enough quality here.” The Keeneland November sale continues through Nov. 16 with sessions beginning daily at 10 a.m. Chameleon to Stoneway Farm Chameleon (Candy Ride {Arg}) (hip 1437) will be joining the broodmare band at Jim Stone's Stoneway Farm after selling for a session-topping $425,000 Saturday at Keeneland. The 4-year-old mare, bred and consigned by Mt. Brilliant Farm, sold in foal to Practical Joke. “She's a very attractive mare in foal to Practical Joke who just had two double raises in his stud fee,” Stoneway's Terri Burch said after signing the ticket on the mare. “We are looking for big, attractive mares. We lost one of ours this year that was in foal to Jack Christopher, so we were looking to find something to replace her.” Home to some 15 mares, Stoneway lost the mare Ahh (Saint Liam), dam of multiple graded winner Ahh Chocolate (Candy Ride {Arg}), this year. “We have a lot of that family, so we were looking for something in a family we didn't have with a lot of winners and stakes horses in it,” Burch said. Chameleon is a daughter of stakes winner Secret Someone (A.P. Indy). Her granddam is Private Gift (Unbridled), who produced multiple graded winner Private Mission, as well as the dam of Grade I winner Dunbar Road. Stoneway Farm campaigned multiple graded winner Stonetastic (Mizzen Mast), who the operation purchased for $77,000 at the 2012 Keeneland September sale. The gray mare joined the farm's broodmare band and her filly by Gun Runner sold for $925,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. “It's so much cheaper for us to race one of our own and make it a stakes horse then try to come over and buy one,” Burch said. “We've been very successful buying them on the cheap and they turn into graded stakes horses and we bring them home to the farm. So we are hoping we get great babies out of [Chameleon] because she's so beautiful.” Terri Burch | Keeneland Yaupon Weanlings in Demand Weanlings from the first crop of Grade I winner Yaupon (Uncle Mo) have sold well all week at Keeneland, with 20 sold through four sessions for an average of $164,500 and three selling for $400,000 or over. The top two weanlings to sell during Saturday's session of the auction were colts by the Spendthrift stallion, with Peter O'Callaghan's Cavalier Bloodstock going to $205,000 to acquire hip 1319 from the Grovendale Sales consignment, and hip 1430, from the Legacy Bloodstock consignment, selling for $220,000 to the phone bid of Brownsboro Racing. “He's a very good-looking horse himself,” O'Callaghan said of Yaupon. “He's out of a Vindication mare, so that's a great influence and it must be coming through, between the Uncle Mo, [Uncle Mo's sire] Indian Charlie, and the Vindication–all of the above. I think he's really a nice horse. I have to hand it to him, they are very consistent. Each session almost, from Fasig, to Keeneland Books 1-3, there has been a couple of star colts and fillies by him each day. It's been impressive.” Bred by St. Simon Place, hip 1319 is out of the unraced Sunday Driver (Quality Road) and from the family of graded stakes winner Skippylongstocking. Hip 1430, bred by Scott Pierce, is out of stakes winner Cartwheelin Lulu (Bustin Stones). “They are really nice horses,” Legacy's Tommy Eastham said of the first crop of Yaupon. “You know how the market is once they figure out the pretty ones. Yaupon is one of the prettiest horses I've seen. Frank Taylor said it best, he's one of the prettiest horses since Unbridled's Song.” Of the session-topping weanling, Eastham said, “This was colt was great-minded, he did everything we asked him to. Even after he'd been out 111 times, we knew he was tired, but he never failed us. Every horse gets tired, but the ones that keep going are the ones that make a difference. We are really grateful to the people like Scott Pierce who send us these horses.” Hip 1319 | Keeneland Opening Act Sets the Pace Opening Act (Ghostzapper) (hip 1223) went to the lead midway through Saturday's fourth session of the Keeneland November sale when bringing $290,000 on a phone bid from Steve Spielman of Nice Guys Stables. The 3-year-old, who sold in foal to Golden Pal, was consigned by Legacy Bloodstock. Out of Laffina (Arch), she is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Bast (Uncle Mo). She raced twice for Michael Tabor and trainer Wesley Ward, finishing third in her debut at Turfway in January. “She is a beautiful mare,” said Legacy's Tommy Eastham. “She is once covered, carrying a colt. She is beautiful minded and has a big pedigree with an update. Body language counts, even in the horse business and she came out and did everything we asked of her. She had a tremendous following at the barn.” The mare's 2-year-old half-sister Royal Slipper (Uncle Mo) graduated by a front-running 4 3/4 lengths for Tabor and Ward at Keeneland Oct. 6. Having been represented by a pair of new graded stakes scorers on Breeders' Cup Saturday, Claiborne Farm's War Front picked up yet another when the impeccably bred Smokin' T ran out a good-looking winner of the $300,000 GIII River City S. beneath the Saturday night lights at Churchill Downs. The sometimes difficult-to-handle 4-year-old colt was outsprinted and settled in centerfield through the early exchanges, as Dominican Pioneer (Pioneerof the Nile) ensured that the nine-furlong event would be run at a genuine tempo. Stitched (Mizzen Mast), winner of the relocated GII Wise Dan S. over the summer, did his part to keep the pacesetter honest and John Velazquez aboard the 4-1 Smokin' T would have been plenty pleased with what was happening on the business end of things, as he settled his charge three deep with cover on the back of Injunction (Skipshot) down the backstretch. Angled out on the turn, just beating Harlan Estate (Kantharos) to a spot, Smokin T' swung out wide for the drive and had dead aim on the leaders, surged to the front inside the eighth pole and sailed clear as Harlan Estate and Siege of Boston (War Front) finished with gusto to fill the minor placings. Smokin' T picked up his first win of 2023 in a second-level allowance going a mile here May 5 with Velazquez at the controls and was a narrowly beaten second in the May 27 Cliff Hanger S. at Monmouth ahead of a maiden black-type success in the Aug. 5 Lure S. at Saratoga. The bay couldn't quite seal the deal when defeated a half-length into third in the GIII Mint Millions S. at Kentucky Downs Sept. 2 and backed up on two weeks' rest, but was no better than third in the GIII BWI Turf Cup at Pimlico. “He's always been a bit headstrong in the early part of his races. I think he did a better job relaxing today and not wasting as much energy,” assistant trainer Reeve McGaughey said. “We thought this distance would suit him better. It was also nice to see him finish well once he got in front. At Kentucky Downs two starts ago he sort of hung a little bit. He's had a solid year and likes this track here at Churchill.” Pedigree Notes: It has been another rock-solid season for the now 21-year-old War Front, whose sons Seal Team (GB) (GII Twilight Derby) and War at Sea (GIII Golden Gate H.) added to his tally last weekend. Overall, War Front is the sire of a dozen stakes winners in 2023, nine of which have come at the graded-stakes level. He is now responsible for 66 GSWs worldwide. Wine Princess was campaigned by Becky Winemiller, who gave $475,000 for the daughter of Horse of the Year Azeri at the 2010 Keeneland September Sale. Trained by Steve Margolis, Wine Princess amassed a record of 5-5-1 from 13 starts including a win in the 2012 GIII Monmouth Oaks before closing her career with a defeat of that year's GI Breeders' Cup Distaff runner-up Don't Tell Sophia (Congaree) in this track's GII Falls City H. She was also third in the GI Juddmonte Spinster S. Wine Princess, a half-sister to Japanese MGSP Leukerbad (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), the latter's GSP full-brother Shirvanshah (Jpn) and GSP Arienza (Giant's Causeway), was purchased by DATTT Farm LLC for $3 million at the 2014 Fasig-Tipton November Sale, tied for the second-priciest offering behind GI Kentucky Oaks winner Princess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior). Also a 19th GSW produced by a daughter of Ghostzapper, Smokin' T has a yearling half-brother by Authentic that was purchased by Whitehorse Stables for $450,000 at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga this summer and a weanling half-brother by Charlatan. Darwin jockey Sonja Logan, who claimed the Alice Springs and Provincial jockeys’ premiership for the first time last season, is back to her winning ways in the Red Centre. Picture: Caroline Camilleri (Darwin Photography Professionals) She might be facing suspension in Darwin, but Top End-based jockey Sonja Logan is back dominating in Alice Springs. For the second straight Saturday, the 31-year-old sealed a winning treble at Pioneer Park on Terry Gillett’s Great Buy ($1.95), as well as Paul Gardner’s pair Red Wraith ($2.10 fav) and Shepliments ($21). Seven days ago, Logan saluted on Red Wraith, Leanne Gillett’s Jen’s Reward and Lisa Whittle’s Omoplata. Subsequently, the champion jockey in the 2022/23 Alice Springs and Provincial premiership, now leads the way this season with seven wins from Darwin’s Adam Nicholls and Alice Springs apprentices Dakota Gillett and Lek Maloney, who have five wins each. It was a slow start to the 2023/24 program for Logan, who won her first race on Red Wraith on October 22 – ending a drought stretching back to April 8 after landing a treble on Day 1 of the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. Red Centre wins dried up towards the end of last season, but for the first half of the 2022/23 period Logan was unstoppable before sealing the premiership with 26 wins from Gillett (24). The last 12 months have been a rollercoaster for Logan, who led Top End and Country jockeys’ premiership clearly before being swamped by Jarrod Todd, following a wrist operation in December and a well-publicised assault in July before marrying Darwin trainer Tom Logan in August. Logan, equal fourth in the Top End and Country standings with five wins behind Todd (17), apprentice Emma Lines (12) and Nicholls (8), will appeal a careless riding charge on Monday after receiving a one-meeting ban after guiding Tayarn Halter’s City Regal to victory at Fannie Bay on Melbourne Cup Day. Gardner, who has started the Alice season spectacularly, now boasts 11 wins to lead Whittle (8), Greg Connor (5) and Ray Viney (4) in the trainers’ race. Red Wraith, a four-year-old gelding by Charm Spirit, made it four straight wins when he led throughout to sink Whittle’s last start winner Excuses Excuses ($3) and Dan Morgan’s Boy Big ($8.50), who was also aiming for four straight wins before blowing the start, by 3.7 lengths over 1100m (0-70). Shepliments, a four-year-old mare by Magnus, finally saluted in her eighth appearance at Pioneer Park, which was also her 17th career start, in a dramatic 1200m maiden. There was a mad scramble for the early lead before five horses settled out in front – Shepliments, who had finished third twice in her three previous starts, wasn’t far behind in the second group. Turning for home and with 350m there were horses everywhere, but disastrously the Connor-trained Black Shiraz (Maloney) – sitting five deep with the leaders – was pulled up after injuring the suspensory ligament in his right leg and was euthanised. Shepliments and Terry Gillett’s Macer’s Razor ($7.50), both dropping back in class, found a gap close to the rails to shoot clear at the 200m with the former overcoming the latter by 0.4 lengths – Kevin Lamprecht’s new arrival Skilton ($4) was 3.4 lengths adrift in third place. Logan’s win on Great Buy occurred in an open 1200m handicap with Terry Gillett also running Supreme Times ($1.95 fav) and Mel’s Legacy ($101) and wife Leanne starting Esashi ($15) in the four-horse field. Esashi led early, but second-placed Great Buy, a seven-year-old gelding by Helmet, took charge at the 400m as third-placed Supreme Times, who had won two of his previous three starts, attempted to erase a two-length deficit. No chance as Great Buy found another gear to make it two wins from three starts to belt Supreme Times, who rolled Great Buy three weeks ago, by 4.2 lengths with Mel’s Legacy catching Esashi for third. Stan Tsaikos, the back to back winner of the jockeys’ premiership in Central Australia before relinquishing the title to Logan, partnered Supreme Times. Terry Gillett’s Supreme Attraction, who was scratched, won the $100,000 Pioneer Sprint (1200m) in April and would have started the race on Saturday as favourite, but he would have had his hands full based on the manner of Great Buy’s performance. It may have taken the Will Savage-trained $3.60 bookmaker favourite Talent Quest, a five-year-old gelding by Your Song, ages to enter the barriers, but he proved too good for his rivals over 1100m (0-58). Placed in four of his seven previous starts, Talent Quest was eyeing that elusive Alice victory and led his rivals a merry dance after catching early leader Superior Power at the 800m. With the in-form Casey Hunter in the saddle, Talent Quest was in good shape turning for home and although there was a wall of horses in hot pursuit he was never threatened before downing Viney’s Debbonaire Boy ($12), who did little wrong, by two lengths. Connor’s Radio Room ($5.50), eight lengths behind Talent Quest at the 800m, and Bold Tropic ($4), the only horse ahead of his stablemate exiting the back straight, finished strongly along the rails with the former pipping the latter for third. It was shocking for Connor and Maloney following Black Shiraz’s demise in the opening race, but the day ended positively for both when Flying Artie’s four-year-old gelding Flying Yishu ($4.20) streeted the opposition by four lengths over 1400m (0-64). In is sixth Alice start, Flying Yishu was among six horses vying for the early lead before the first corner and settled in fourth place along the back straight as he strived to make it three wins after three consecutive seconds. Viney’s Strike Eagle, the $3.70 favourite in an open race, sat three wide outside Blueant, camped on the rails, and Nicotera, aiming for three straight wins, approaching the final bend as Flying Yishu, with Maloney claiming 3kg, poised to strike. Strike Eagle, with two seconds and a third in Alice, hit the front turning for home, but with 200m to go he had no answer for Flying Yishu, while Terry Gillett’s Tintern Power ($6.50), well adrift at the 600m, claimed third from Savage’s Pariah Conviction ($101), one other fast-finishing backmarker. What Scone Races Where Scone Race Club – 434 Bunnan Rd, Scone NSW 2337 When Monday, November 13, 2023 First Race 1:50pm AEDT Visit Dabble The hunter region of NSW is the destination to kick-off our week of racing on Monday afternoon, as the Scone Race Club gets set to host a competitive seven-race program. The rail is out +5m between the 800m-winning post, while the remainder of the rail will sit in the true position. We should be in for pristine conditions on race-day, with only sunny skies predicted leading into Monday afternoon as the opening event gets underway at 1:50pm AEDT. Best Bet at Scone: Shuri Shuri was a sensational debut winner at Taree on October 20, going on to score by an astonishing 4.6 lengths. The daughter of Satono Aladdin was much too classy for her opposition at the country circuit. as the Kris Lees-trained mare was able to take a forward position before careering away with the prize. Debuts don’t come more dominant than what we saw, and if she can hold that form heading to Scone on Monday, Shuri should prove very hard to beat. Best Bet Race 2 – #1 Shuri (1) 4yo Mare | T: Kris Lees | J: Dylan Gibbons (60kg) -166.67 with Betfair Next Best at Scone: Wild Calm It’s hard to believe Wild Calm is still at maiden at start eight heading into Monday afternoon, with the four-year-old competing in some quality maiden company. She’s slowly starting to make improvement with every start, with her latest a narrow defeat behind the progressive Jurisprudence at Gosford on October 26. The Annabel Neasham-trained galloper loomed a threat with 200m to go, and seemingly peaked on the run. This is a much more suitable maiden for the daughter of American Pharoah, and we fully expect Wild Calm to remove the maiden tag here. Next Best Race 1 – #1 Wild Calm (10) 4yo Mare | T: Annabel Neasham | J: Heavelon Van Der Hoven (60kg) +120 with Dabble Best Value at Scone: Mr Wallace Mr Wallace seems to be relishing in his racing since joining the Cody Morgan barn at the beginning of April and despite only one win on the resume so far, this looks a manageable task for the son of Medaglia D’oro. He was powering through the line over the unsuitable 1000m journey first-up at Muswellbrook on October 23, dashing through the wire to suggest an immediate setup in trip would be ideal. Braith Nock takes the reins to get Mr Wallace much more likeable in the weights with 59kgs after the claim, and with an economical run from barrier seven, Mr Wallace warrants an each-way ticket. Best Value Race 4 – #1 Mr Wallace (7) 5yo Gelding | T: Cody Morgan | J: Braith Nock (a2) (61kg) +600 with Playup Monday quaddie tips for Scone races Scone quadrella selections Monday, November 13, 2023 1-2-4-6 1-3-4-8 1-3-4-7 5 | Copy this bet straight to your betslip More horse racing tips View the full article

PILOT COMMANDER (c, 2, Justify–Rebuke, by Carson City), drawn on the inside in post two, ran to the money as the 6-5 favorite on debut. The $700,000 OBS March breezer broke like a shot and was pressed to his inside through an opening quarter of :22.89. He began to shake free rounding the far turn, kicked for home as the one to catch, and, despite hanging on his left lead down the stretch, handled his Bob Baffert-trained stablemate and $1.05-million KEESEP graduate Imagination (Into Mischief) by 2 1/4 lengths. Chad Brown had three chances to record a sixth victory in the last eight runnings of the GIII Pebbles S., and it was the 10-1 longest priced of the trio Implicated (Connect) who parlayed a perfect trip into a first black-type success Saturday at the Big A. Drawn the fence with Manny Franco at the controls for the first time, the $125,000 Fasig-Tipton October yearling purchase was away without incident and raced a touch keen into the first turn as 53-1 Precious Avary (Divining Rod) showed the way at a moderate pace. Saving every inch of ground down the back, Franco went for Implicated midway on the turn and rode for some luck as Precious Avary was still going well enough up front. But the pacesetter rolled away from the fence in upper stretch, giving Implicated the room she required and she punched through before holding Sacred Wish (Not This Time) at bay. Startup Mentality (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) was second-last to make the stretch and might have caught Sacred Wish for second but for having to steady when off that one's heels a sixteenth of a mile from home. A distant third on main-track debut at Saratoga last August, Implicated won her maiden in her grass debut and closed the season with a victory in this track's Chelsey Flower S. Oct. 28. Away nearly a year thereafter, the gray ran out of fitness late when fourth in a nine-furlong allowance Oct. 19. “Last year when she ran covered up, she was better,” said Brown. “I told Manny in the paddock, 'You drew a nice, cozy post here. If you can get a pocket trip, let's test her out.' I thought I had her ready last time but sure enough, a covered trip worked for her and Manny did a great job.” Pedigree Notes: Implicated is the third graded winner for Connect, who has now been represented by graded scorers on dirt (Rattle N Roll, synthetic (Witwatersrand) and now the grass. The Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale got underway on Saturday with the 36-lot dispersal Springhill Stud. The batch were offered by Breda Lennon, the widow of the late horseman Kieran Lennon. David L'Estrange went to €75,000 for lot 35, a 2-year-old gelding by Getaway (Ger). Out of Morning Run (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}), he was previously purchased by Lennon for €28,000 at the November NH Sale in 2021. “He looks a long-term project, he is a big horse!” L'Estrange said. “He looks all over a chaser and might make up into a point-to-pointer to sell on or I might keep him to race. He will go to Cleaboy Stud from here.” Second on the buyers' sheet was a grey gelding by Capri (Ire) (lot 22). He attracted a bid of €62,000 from Cleaboy Stud. He is a half-brother to three NH stakes winners including Grade 2 winner The Dutchman (Ire) (King's Theatre {Ire}). The third-highest price was lot 3, a yearling gelding by Crystal Ocean (GB), who was purchased by Ian Ferguson. He is a half-sister to G3 Cork Grand National winner Mattock Ranger (Ire) (Oscar {Ire}). “Kieran was a good friend and he was very lucky for me, I bought Banbridge from him,” he said. “I like this yearling–he has been bought as a racing prospect for a client. He is coming home to me now and he will stay there until he is broken in.” “Kieran always bought a nice foal and he could go out there blindfolded and buy a horse; he had so many nice ones through his hands.” Overall, the dispersal brought €734,500 for an average of €20,986 and a median of €15,500. Only one of the 36 lots was reported as unsold. The November National Hunt Sale continues on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and runs through Thursday, Nov. 16. Geraldina Needs Very Best To Defend QE II Cup
Wandering Eyes posted a topic in The Rest of the World
Sunday Racing's Geraldina (Jpn), the product of Japanese Horses of the Year Maurice (Jpn) and Gentildonna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will have to lift her game to a level not yet seen in 2023 if she is to become the third horse to go back-to-back in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup at Kyoto Racecourse Sunday afternoon. The 5-year-old was a cracking third to Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the G1 Arima Kinen to end a fruitful 2022 campaign, but it's been tougher sledding this term, as she has finished outside the top three in each of her four starts. Her fourth-place effort to Equinox in the June 25 G1 Takarazuka Kinen was full of merit, as she came from a long way back to finish fourth, and perhaps she needed the run when only sixth to the progressive Rousham Park (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}) and Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the G2 Sankei Sho All Comers S. Sept. 24. The visiting Ryan Moore has the mount Sunday and knows a thing or two about Geraldina's parents. “I won Grade 1 races on both her sire and that is something special for me,” Moore said. “Even though I've never ridden Geraldina, I've watched the video of last year's race and will look forward to riding her on Sunday.” Gentildonna defeated Verxina (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) into second in all three legs of the Filly Triple Crown in 2012, and the latter–narrowly beaten at odds-on in this event that season–is also represented her by Divina (Jpn) (Maurice {Jpn}). A close fourth to Songline (Jpn) (Kizuna {Jpn}) in the G1 Victoria Mile earlier this season, the bay, owned by former American professional baseball player Kaz Sasaki, exits a nose defeat of Rouge Eveil (Jpn) (Just a Way {Jpn}) in the G2 Fuchu Himba S. at Tokyo Oct. 14. This year's Classic form is represented by Harper (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}), second to Liberty Island (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) in the G1 Yushun Himba and a latest third in the G1 Shuka Sho Oct. 15. Brede Weg (Jpn) (Lord Kanaloa {Jpn}) was working her way through the lower grades over the summer, but announced herself as a potential top-class mare with a narrow defeat to future Shuka Sho runner-up Masked Diva (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) in the G2 Rose S. in September. Sheikh Fahad's Art House (Jpn) (Screen Hero {Jpn}) was a winner in Group 3 company in January and was last seen finishing a good fourth behind Through Seven Seas (Jpn) (Dream Journey {Jpn}) at Group 3 level in March. The latter gave Equinox all he could handle in the Takarazuka Kinen and went on to be a meritorious fourth to Cartier Horse of the Year Ace Impact (Ire) (Cracksman {GB}) in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. 3rd-DMR, $61K, Msw, 2yo, f, 1m, 4:30 p.m. At last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale, trainer Bob Baffert with agent Donato Lanni bid to $1.8 million to secure NAFISA (Quality Road) on behalf of an undisclosed client who turned out to be Zedan Racing. Consigned by Lane's End (hip 213), the auction's overall third topper was bred by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm & Ranch and Lane's End's W. S. Farish. It was Goodman who purchased her SP dam Ithinkisawapudycat (Bluegrass Cat) for $2.2 million in-foal to Constitution at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale. A half-sister to Canadian champion Spring In The Air (Spring At Last), Ithinkisawapudycat's first offspring was 2016 GI Spinaway S. heroine Sweet Loretta (Tapit). She also produced SP Bridlewood Cat (Street Sense), a 2017 Keeneland September purchase for $750,000 by Bridlewood Farm, who herself foaled a yearling by Authentic, a weanling by Essential Quality and visited Tapit for next year.
