  1. There are lots of theories about how to manage shin soreness. Most agree that a 6 week turn out is the way to go. However some argue that it is best to work a marginally shinsore horse through it. Even turning out shinsore horses at the very first sign can lead to recurring shin soreness when bought back into work. Most trainers know about the remodelling process etc etc . Even the stories about the old time trainers blistering the shins etc etc is old hat. As we all know horses can even become shinsore working in winter conditions so it stands to reason that an AWT is not really going to be any different. It was just an observation by a trainer here who said his horse ( I would say it would have been marginally shinsore) seemed happier on the AWT. I assume horses who are a bit" jointy "might like the cushioning affect of the AWT. In regards to our new track, some trainers are restricting their horses to slow pacework on , others are galloping on it, some love it, some dont'. Time will tell. It might have been prudent for the other 2 new tracks to have been put on hold until the verdict comes in on this one????? Anyway the happiest trainer in Cambridge at the moment is Finnbar Leahy!!!!
  2. Maybe there are no properly shinsore? Who knows. Just a comment I heard but the point I am making is that some horses seem to appreciate the cushioning effect of the track. Are you a trainer?
  3. Hi Pam, So far most trainers have been happy with it. Shinsore horses seem to appreciate the surface according to some. It seems to stand up to the heavy rain very well so that's a huge plus. Tomorrows trials will be interesting.
  4. I thought he was well brought at that price. I had him at 150 to 200K. You are right, 2 close relations in class 4 HK so it doesn't add up. However his breezeup was very impressive and quite a nice horse as well . Great work by Finnbar to spot him as a yearling.
  5. Finbarr Leahy had the last laugh on his good mates Sam Beatson and Ben Foote when he sold Lot 54 for 525k . Finbarr bid up on the horse at the yearling sales and stalled when the bid got to 80k. Sam and Ben egged Finbarr to go again so he secured the Sacred Star colt for 85K thinking they would take a share. They both laughed and declined to be involved. Sam and Ben were over the moon for Finbarr but kicking themselves a bit but a great result all round for the 3 mates.
  6. Maybe before the Saundry era ? Those responsible have left the building! ( or country)
  7. Love to see the real list! 1000's owed by certain trainers but getting the slate wiped clean?
  8. Chelsea has been riding good for quite some time. She is riding beyond her years. Most of her wins seem to be on horses outside of the stable she is linked with. That speaks volumes as well.
  9. How much do you give to charity? Its a lot more than baked beans he gives. I know he is not perfect but are any of us? Maybe you are Newmarket (hiding behind your keyboard as usual?) It seems to me that this forum is the only way you can attack Leo. You describe me as Leo's mate in a derogatory manner and you underestimate me. What would you call others that are better known mates of his, Joseph Parker, Bob Jones, Monty Betham, John Tamihere, Paula Bennett to name a few. All sucked in FFS???? I should have known better to even give my opinion on here, even Pam said its time to give it a break!!!!!!
  10. Having had a spray from Leo years ago ( on the phone) he got same back from me. Leo can give it and also take it without grudges despite what you may think. I have got to know him reasonably well without socialising with him. What I have found out is that beneath the exterior that he displays to his detractors is a very generous heart. When he is down to his last dollar he still donates his time and his money to others that need support. My daughter is involved with the Auckland City Mission so I know he supports that cause on a regular basis. So all you people that can only find fault with him ( and yes he shoots from the hip without thinking as we all can do at times) maybe its time to move on?
  11. He is an idiot like his mate Shane Jones. Two guys who are so inflated with their own importance. I am Maori but they are both total wankers. Ok Winstone put his hand up for racing but what else has he ever done apart from grandstanding?
  12. Hi Pam, Further to a grade 3 result they are subdivided down as follows Grade 3a -arytenoid asymmetry observed at rest ,full abduction after swallow and maintained for a few seconds Grade 3b full abduction only maintained briefly Grade 3c fully abduction only momentarily The big problem for the buyer is grade3 is considered a pass but your purchase may be a 3b or a 3c which is virtually a one way ticket to grade 4/5. It would be interesting to know just how many horses bought at auction have subsequently gone in the wind. Many vendors would not want their horses scoped just before an auction and quite rightfully so. Some vendors have recognised this problem and have scope results available that were taken prior to arriving on the sales ground. My bullshit comment was not in relation to the research undertaken but to the fact that the writer concludes by say "we see no reason to change the current post-sale scoping system" I believe that a buyer is entitled to know what grade his purchase is and be able to get a second opinion if necessary. If it has been bought to sell on to Asia then a grade 3 is unacceptable to the various Jockey Clubs. If the buyer is happy to proceed with the purchase of a grade 3 horse then at least they know what they are buying bearing in mind that some grade 3 horses can race successfully.
  13. It has always bugged me that when buying a horse at auction you are never told what grade your purchase has scoped at once you have requested it be scoped. Even though you have requested and paid for that procedure you are not entitled to know the grade. This puzzles me. How do they get away with it? Vets will not tell you, yet you have paid the Auctioneer to scope on your behalf. In the Auctioneer's eyes a horse has passed up to grade 3. The problem is not so much that horse cannot race successfully with a grade 3 scoping, but the horse cannot be sold to Hong Kong , Macau, Singapore, Malaysia. A recent article in the "Foundation Bulletin " from Brian Anderson of the Ballarat Veterinary Practice, quotes statistics that show horses with a Grade 3 result that have been sold at NZ Sales were not inferior to grade 1 and 2 when comparing race results. His conclusion was that there is no reason to change the post-sale scoping system used at NZ sales. I do not concur with that view having bought horses with a grade 3 scoping who have eventually deteriorated to grade 4. I think his article is bullshit to be blunt!
  14. Hi Centaur, He was called Kingy (by Kingdom Bay) and trained by Andrew Campbell. Kingy was an impressive individual weighing close to 540KG He had 3 starts in NZ for 2 wins and a 7th in the Manawatu Sires Produce won by San Luis. I am pretty sure he set a 1100m track record at Otaki as well. During his stint in HK probably his best performance was running 2nd to the Champion galloper Silent Witness .He won in Class 1 in HK (Premier) but I believe he could have been more successful in a top HK stable. However HK Owners in many instances give their horses to trainers that they know or maybe their friends have horses in that stable. Many horses do not reach their potential in HK as proved by the number that come back to NZ and win again. Kingy was retired back to my stable and was a babysitter to a lot of horses until he passed away. Through that horse I made a lot of HK contacts and also made a mate in Andrew so in a way he was a special horse to me.
  15. Thanks for that but I am not a regular contributer so using my name is not really an issue that I can see. From time to time I like to view the posts and get an idea of how racing folk see the industry going. I am now passing on this thread about Leo but I appreciate the other views on the matter and I hope I have not offended anyone too much.
  16. Chief Stipe. Can you change my Alias to Tim Carter please? I am not a fan of an alias and when I joined your site I mistakenly used the name of a horse I sold to HK many years ago and not my name. Its easy to speak your mind when you don't put your real name to it. PS. I only responded to this thread because a poster was talking about a physical confrontation with Leo. It could have been anybody that was threatened and I would have posted my feelings as it was done behind an alias. I take people as I find them and Leo has been good in my dealings with him. To the poster who attached the file regarding the Molloy's personal problems, not really a good look for you my friend. Leo is a good father and that's a big plus regardless of his marriage and business problems.
  17. Don't judge me so easily . Leo has done more for racing than a lot of you no names. He is not perfect and we all know that. But he speaks his mind , right or wrong. I have no beef with him or what he says on social media. It is his opinion and everyone has the right to free speech. Just as you guys have, although you behind an alias. Big difference.
  18. All good. I suppose we could dig up dirt on anyone if we are so desperate to put them down,? Not my style but you guys go ahead, have fun and hide behind your user names.
  19. True. He says what a lot of people think but they would never say. That tends to get you into trouble. He would be the first to tell me he doesn't need me to bat for him .A few years ago I saw Leo handle a situation with a bigger man rather well and he does fit the saying," "don't judge a book by its cover". I seldom see Leo or even talk to him but he always takes time to call, or txt me on the rare occasion I need advice so although I am not the President of his fan club I respect him for who he is. In regards to his "Big Bash" he was entitled to invite whoever, was it within the restrictions of Covid 19 protocol? Maybe not. I am not sure, the laws are a bit confusing right now. I was surprised by some of his invited guests that were named in the press. I wouldn't have thought Leo would be involved with one or two of them but I have never mixed in his circles or been to any of his bars so not for me to judge.
  20. Another tough guy or just a loudmouth? I do not socialise with Leo but I know him to be a good and decent man. In saying that I am not a fan of people that need to rubbish someone they probably have never met or spoken to. From what I know about Leo, he was a Jockey, (and a later a very astute Trainer) studied and became a Vet, established a number of cafe's and restaurant and bars, , a keen hunter , a good family man, and a guy that isn't afraid to take on the "powers that be" in sticking up for the battlers. So if you guys think that Leo is a pushover then think again. Anyone that can achieve what he has done doesn't do all that by being a wimp. Also he has poured a ton of money into racing by being an owner. Have you or Murray Fish? I hope so. A charity boxing match was said with" tongue in cheek" and I know Leo would not be the least interested, but if you have something to say to him face to face , he isn't hard to find I do question the people he invited to his big bash though! Ill thought out somewhat! Anyone of you guys are free to call me if you don't like my reply Tim Carter Mob 021354588
  21. What about a charity boxing match between tough guy Murray Fish and Leo, or you and Leo? Perhaps both of you vs Leo on the same night? I think Leo knocks both of you out!!
  22. Leo might just surprise you! I don't think he lacks balls at all. Born and bred on the West Coast!
  23. Yes I know him and have been to his property at Raurimu. Lent him my digger to put in his race. He doesn't hide behind an alias either. Ok he might be a little eccentric by wearing a bowler hat and braces but so is Tyson Fury. You don't judge a book by its cover. I can only speak as how I found him to be. I do not belong to the Greyhound fraternity so I can't comment on things I don't know. However Clarkie has discussed the treatment he received from certain Officials and a lot of what he said is typical of the things that have happened to participants in the thoroughbred and trotting fraternity. The so called" big names" in all 3 codes seem to be able to escape severe scrutiny at times but smaller guys get the book thrown at them. I also cannot comment on previous posts by anyone on this forum as I have not been a regular reader but since the lockdown and you know the rest!
