mikeynz
Only 6 races last year, seems to me their is a bit of a lull after the Grand National meeting so be interesting to see how numbers stack up. 4 maiden races as well as a open handicap sprint programmed one wonders if this day should be a week later and this week run on the AWT. Trots at Oamaru Sunday, here's a question someone must know will the trackside crew set up Friday and stay over for Sunday or go home and return Sunday morn, trackside are trying to cut cost, might that be a reason for Friday Sunday at same course or totally irrelevant. Worrying about the cost has never been a concern of the TAB Mike(or any of the hierarchy in this game) Don't know how many times I have told them when programming the Coast January meetings that it is logical to have us(Reefton) first since they will have all the machines etc there from the trotting meeting the week before. But no they have one of the other ones first so that they have to cart the gear away from Reefton then cart it back The industry pays the bills so nobody worries about the cost savings to be achieved with a tiny bit of thought Similar with the starting gates - Try to impress upon these dates chappies that there is a saving if Reefton is either first or last(the gates are stored at Reefton). But no they love to jam us in the middle so we have to truck them to Grey then back to us then down to Kumara then back home again. Nobody gives a stuff about logic and cost saving(admittedly they have ordered it properly in the 2023/24 season) Just like the way they are happy to have commentators flitting here there and everywhere when it suits them 1

Nominations shortly I will be interested to see how many open handicappers are looking to turn up. I could be completely wrong, I have been before. mikeynz
4 nominations for the open handicap, I imagine they can be shifted to another race, maybe and only 6 for a maiden 3 year old race, I was right thought about the open handicappers, they had there go last week.

You would be disappointed if a couple of trainers couldn't come up with a couple of horses to make up a 6 horse field and run for $22,000. I continue to be impressed by the Tylers who seem to have the attitude that the money is there so why not run for it.
mikeynz
8 races, guess that's pretty good for the time of the year, I was right about the open race, seems the experts were wrong scheduling one, but as I often say, what do I know. mikeynz
Nominations for Gore Friday are good, maybe 10 races but heavy rain for Thursday, so that's a bit of a shame, maybe 10 races but will the powers that be be keen, there is a double standard it seems. Yes 24 noms in one race where they only start 12, but no way will they split it, not down south. Different story if it was at Matamata. mikeynz
10 races, good numbers too, mostly Southern trained also, one wonders sometimes if more meetings are needed in the South, as well as Timaru, even a few mini meetings now and then, problem is would the tracks handle more use, it's always a gamble weather wise, strangely they have moved now to Sunday which is probably a smart move with heavy rain tomorrow , spose if you wait 4 months what's a couple of days.
