TAB For Ever
Little wonder that Victorian racing has added weight to the call to continue Jumps racing in New Zealand as they did recently. Their jumps racing seems to rely on Kiwi bred and/or trained horses to make up their fields . Today the ex -Rotorua Cup winner The Good Fight [ ex SRitchie/Murray ] won the AU$400k Aussie Grand National. He has been gone about 3 yrs and he beat ex-Wellington Cup winner Leaderboard [Mark Walker] who just crossed the ditch for a few races ! The winner well bred by High Chapparal -Pravda In the undercard Jericho flat winner Nassak Diamond [ owned by Oaks Stud] beat Hit the Road Jack. The Cunning Fox [ Reliable Man] made it two from two earlier and the Duke Of Bedford [ Tavistock] also won. Theire was also plenty of place getters that were Kiwi bred...another by Tavistock and one by Guillotine who like Tavistock was by Montjue ! The main race had an odd-on favourite who was a one-time Melbourne Cup fav but he was giving away a huge weight impost and punctured before the 800m. It looked a torrid pace and there were a few fallers ! 1

Whatever , its hoped if you folk have a real interest in NZ jumps racing surviving you have about a week to send in a submission. And wasn't it great to see ANN Browne and her colours win the main Steeples at Te Rapa on Saturday.

The outcry in Aus is significant in calling for a ban in Victoria of jumps racing after it.

Noted barry b......Victoria racing seems keen to continue the Jumps racing plus they support NZ doing likewise cos they obviously source a lot of horses and riders from NZ. From memory , you are a good Te Rapa man so what is your opinion about NZ jumps racing . The Ballarat track seemed quite firm and those recent Melbourne Cup contenders seem to set a blistering pace in the main race where the accidents occured ! barryb
Sadly, NZ Jumps racing is done for & so is Victorian. No one bets on them & wont do into the future regardless of what they do. Even I get sick of under $2 jumps winners, punters just avoid them like the plague. I have heard a lot of arguments for keeping jumps & many valid ones, the problem is the vast majority don’t reference the end product user. There are not many businesses out there that survive who don’t take into account when supplying something to the end user the cost of production v sale price. Jumps in NZ offer nothing compared to say Warrnambool & that’s the issue, it’s too late to manufacture that now. 1
Freda
Sadly indeed, but you're right I feel. I love the jumpers, I know you do too, but - although Warrnambool is a place I've never been too - the product [ horrible word ] just can't compete with that, or the UK/Irish version. No one does jumping like the Brits, how we fell behind so badly has to be another topic but watching the lesser lights flounder over tatty obstacles is not doing much for the sport. The CD is really the only area keeping it going now.
Huey
If they really had motivation to save jumps racing they would have setup one of the unused venues as a focal point for the sport, somewhere that could have given the sport an identity and a home as such. I think the sport has lost all its identity with the changes that have happened over the past few years and it looks like it is put wherever they can fit it. Most of those venues being good winter spots it would have made sense. However you won't get any innovation, thinking outside the box or empathy from any of the lot running the sport so that was never going to happen.
