Trainspotter question:  How many of the Grp 1's listed have lost their status as Grp 1's?

horse races in nz that have lost their group one status?

Yes, there have been a few notable horse races in New Zealand that have lost their Group 1 status. One prominent example is the Auckland Cup, which was downgraded to Group 2 status after the 2020/21 season. This change was part of a review by the New Zealand Pattern Committee to ensure races meet certain standards1.

Other races that were downgraded include the Easter Handicap (from Group 2 to Group 3) and the Rotorua Cup (from Group 3 to Listed status). Additionally, several Group 1 races for two and three-year-olds, such as the New Zealand Derby, NZ 1000 Guineas, NZ 2000 Guineas, Levin Classic, and Manawatu Sires' Produce, have received warnings for not meeting the minimum race rating expectations.

It's a bit sad to see these changes, but it's all part of the effort to maintain high standards in horse racing. Do you follow any particular races or horses?

I struggle more with the name changes.  In the list of 99 there have been many.

The Levin Classic at least has lost Group 1 status, not sure of the others.
