Yes, there have been a few notable horse races in New Zealand that have lost their Group 1 status. One prominent example is the Auckland Cup, which was downgraded to Group 2 status after the 2020/21 season. This change was part of a review by the New Zealand Pattern Committee to ensure races meet certain standards1. Other races that were downgraded include the Easter Handicap (from Group 2 to Group 3) and the Rotorua Cup (from Group 3 to Listed status). Additionally, several Group 1 races for two and three-year-olds, such as the New Zealand Derby, NZ 1000 Guineas, NZ 2000 Guineas, Levin Classic, and Manawatu Sires' Produce, have received warnings for not meeting the minimum race rating expectations. It's a bit sad to see these changes, but it's all part of the effort to maintain high standards in horse racing. Do you follow any particular races or horses? curious Posted yesterday at 02:24 AM Share Posted yesterday at 02:24 AM Yes, the Levin Classic has been down graded to G2. The 1000 Guineas is on a warning but only an alert for the 2000 at this stage. The Manawatu Sires had its warning removed last season.
