Seems odd that the RIB didn't at least open & adjourn an investigation into the matter. Isn't that why the RIB is there in the first place?

Why?  The protester was trespassing.  The Police didn't file charges.  Quite frankly the protester got all he deserved.

Imagine the meal you would have made if one of the dogs had returned a positive?

I think GRNZ have let the industry down.  The questions to me about this incident are how did two unlicensed people gain entry, and I thought New Zealand law allowed for self defence and protection of property so, why do the unlicensed in a licensed area have the upper hand?

Too many weak people involved.

That's been my opinion forever, far to many years (and reviews) of being all words and only reactive.

Just as guilty are the RIU/JCA, now the RIB.

People are going to do what they do. If they do something that is out of line, they should be held to account.

If the rules are ignored for some participants & not others, then it's an issue.

If one trainer gets fined for an Arsenic positive swab & another under the exact same circumstances (chewing on treated timber) gets a fine but has it fully suspended for one year, then it's an issue.

Geez @Yankiwi we've done this particular chestnut of yours to death.  Get over it.  Each case is different hence different penalties.

Rightly or wrongly it happens every day in the Higher Courts.

Who is going to bother collecting fines once the industry is closed?  Really, who cares?  Just like who cares about what happens to the people in the industry.  There's more fuss about the fate of the dogs.  Trainers are going to keep a few and rehome the rest.  How will they pay to feed those retired greyhounds without an income?

Those wanker activists need to be dealt with violently. Trainers need to arm themselves with a bat or two and break some sculls, time for appeasement to end. If it meant jail, so be it, these scum have ruined your lives, time to front up.

Really? Isn't it a decade of warnings and inaction from the industry that has done that?

Fatality rates

They are what they are.  My research suggests that there is a natural attrition rate that can't be altered.

public perception

The perception of the general public that a Greyhound is just like the pet they have at home which incidentally 80% treat abysmally.  Over 50% of those "pets" are overweight or obese.

If that's the case, then it's a lost cause.

Maybe, but if that perception is wrong, the industry has done nothing to change it. Horse racing is headed down the same track imo.

Where are the Dog Crusaders tackling this problem?  There you go @Yankiwi something to get your teeth into!  Imagine the uproar if 11 dogs died a day on Greyhound tracks!

Auckland Council is sounding the alarm as more dogs are being put down than at any time in the past decade.

Staff euthanised 4007 dogs in the 2023-24 financial year - an average of 11 a day.

How can you change a perception when most dog owners are abusing their own dogs?

Maybe.  Certainly you are not helping just as @Yankiwi 's crusade hasn't helped.

I reaslise you both had a late life epiphany and now want to atone for your decades of racing participation but please just sign up to your local Church and confess.

And they've altered it significantly in Victoria.

“Last financial year’s 43 fatalities represented 0.039 per cent of the 110,422 starters in Victorian greyhound racing, down from 69 (0.068 per cent) in 2019-20.

“With over 110,000 starters in about 15,000 races in Victoria annually, fatalities and serious injuries in racing are rare.”

I think you'll find the public perception wrt dogs used as pets and dogs used for entertainment and commercial purposes is not the same. So it's apples and oranges.

Explain this years "sharp spike" in deaths?  I thought as a University researcher you wouldn't be prone to cherry picking statistics.
