Doomed
11 hours ago, TAB For Ever said: A totally NEW race on the calendar ...... Placed on the same day as some iconic NZ races ,not only did it attract phenomenal interest from Australia and abroad ,but in a soft and very competitive wagering environment it increased betting on those iconic races as well. And the total active betters in NZ on that meeting was a record ! And the good news is next year it is going to be bigger and better again ! Year one and all NZ betting records were either beaten or nearly beaten. Not that one day or one race proves anything ,they gotta keep repeating it ! But the alternative was obvious...keep doing the same ole , same ole and NZ racing would be back where we were.....unable to pay our bills and technically insolvent. A great time NOW to be involved ! Everyone is entitled to their opinion on these things and TAB's is certainly a valid one. Personally, I find myself disagreeing with virtually everything he has said. The slot wasn't "placed on the same day as some iconic NZ races". The iconic NZ races were all moved onto a single day to boost slot day. We used to have Derby Day, Auckland Cup Day, NZ Stakes day, Breeders Stakes Day at Te Aroha, probably even Sires Produce day. These were all feature race days in their own right. Now they have all been bundled together as support acts for a slot race and lost their individual identities. Where we used to have five separate feature race days we now have one. Did the turnover on that day, plus the four or five other days that it bastardised top the turnovers that those four or five other days used to do as stand alone feature race days? And did the turnover justify the extra $1.7m that was poured into the supporting races, plus the money poured into the slot itself, the $1m of bonuses, and probably $500,000 in promotional costs. All that for a race that only one of this season's top half dozen 3yos was eligible to race in, and that one eligible horse chose not to bother.

Well, they did not help themselves by having a lamb as a mascot for a Rugby Team and calling their Basketball team The Rams. I also must give TAB some credit, usually anyone who comes from Christchurch is normally a pain in the arse parochial. Not only that he has turned Jaffa. But you wonder why he's gone jaffa, maybe he's simply not liked by anyone, at least in Auckland it's easier to hide in the masses Fair comment about the naming of teams, but maybe Cantabs refer to jaffas with two meanings, one as being a jaffa and referring to the fact Larry the Lamb drops jaffas out his rear end. It kind of gives the meaning Auckland are shit new meaning Edited 10 hours ago by mikeynz

Besides in Wellington, Football has been the dominate sport for many years and Football is now NZs largest team sport in terms of participation The Wellington Men's Rugby Team has to play their games at Porirua Park in front of maybe 100 spectators. The Hurricanes and the Wellington Rugby Union have major financial issues and with any luck they will fold.
