Who do they directly answer to now a days?

Are there any left?  If there are I assume the RIU.

I remember my father knew most of them and when I was a kid tagging along met a few of them.  Not that he ever did anything wrong except maybe sell his winning tickets for a premium to a guy in a long overcoat and low brimmed hat behind the tote one day.

Was one called Muirhead?  Or Butterfield?

Jim Fleming was the one that ticked of me getting into the birdcage back in 82, later when I got involved with trying to set up a Stablehands Union, which we couldn't do sadly, I got to take a few cases to the Labour Court! Bud Flavill (sp) was the head d and we worked together well to win those cases!

Aren't they called Racecourse Inspectors?  

The old Racecourse D was really an anachronism of the past and a product of the old Racing Act.  Basically according to the rules then you had to be a saint to be allowed entry on a Racecourse.

They are now the Racecourse Investigators, One in Cambridge, One in Christchurch and One in the Deep south i think, maybe one in the Auckland area as well, don't think they attend much in the way of race day or training facilities anymore, and i think they report to the RIB Legal Counsel who is office based in Wellington, so if you want to get a hold of one just drop a line to the new RIB office in Wellington or the Office in Auckland or the Office in Christchurch.

I think the most well known Racecourse Inspector was an ex-police character JB McKenzie .

He was the #1 for many years !
