the galah Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago (edited) This weeks 2 year old races in nz canned, due to lack of numbers. Only 1, 2 year old is racing in the whole of nz in the coming week. Actually, last weeks race at auckland was interesting. Pre race Ray green was interviewed on trackside and said one of the horses he had entered had bad manners and the only reason he had entered it was because, without it they wouldn't have had the 5 horses needed to run the race.It galloped and took no part. Of course mr green is just being honest,as he was when earlier in the year he said that he was lining up a 2 year old filly, when really it wasn't going good enough to take to the races. 4 months ago ,mathew peden from hrnz said, "we have more and more 2 year olds racing all the time" where have they all gone,or was he just pulling our leg? Fair comment , after a promising start most trainers have decided to just educate their 2 yr olds and get to the trials stage before spelling them and taking the next step to racing them. Mark Jones commented that in general Trainers were reluctant to race them at 2 and risk their value so early on.So he pointed at the trainers . At this time of year , most of the races are around the minimum stakes with the sires stakes series which many target starting later in August and run to end of year ! Today Auckland had about at 8 trials/workouts ,4 at least looked up to race speed rating 2.02 MR for 2050 m. Tomorrow there are at least 10 pacers at Chch trials/workouts. The aim for trainers at this stage seems to be to get into big Age group races or showing enough potential to get a big offer ! And some of the bigger stables have enough 2 yr olds to sort out their abilities at home and in trials to press on with the best and spell the rest . The 2 yr old Bonus for first win etc is still in its infant stage and is talked about and targeted , but this balanced with desire not to jeopardise its future and saleability ! They going faster and faster at 2 and many not mature enough at 2 to compete. 2 Quote

Nice observation Mr Galah. and Ray Green is one of the 'very few' who pushed hard to get 2 year olds racing every year. He probably has more Numbers from the yearling sales to do it with. the big stables should try at least 10 yearlings each year (even more if possible) as one in 10 horses can usually make the races ok as a 2 year-old going by laws of averages and numbers) NZ trainers/owners traditionally give their horses extra time to develope and grow and are reluctant to push them to maximum thrust at a young age . wasn't long ago some NZ men didn't even race them as 3 yearolds on occasion. We are 6 weeks off half way mark through the 2 year old season and more should be stepping out now. but most will still wait till the Spring. QLD is fairly similar. Our weekly 2 year-old race ran yesterday ( with 6 starters) Winter a good time to Spell them generally and work them up through the Spring , and assault the Big Nov Dec racing which includes the rich Sires Stakes ( That Marketplace won brilliantly last year ) The best are still to come !. so don't panic yet . It's just cold old Winter at the moment. 1 Quote
