Chief Stipe Posted 15 hours ago Posted 15 hours ago Greyhounds are frequently used as canine blood donors because over 85% have a universal negative blood type (DEA 1.1-negative), allowing their blood to be given to any other dog in emergencies. They are ideal because they have a high volume of iron-rich red blood cells, a calm temperament, and easy-to-access jugular veins. Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds +2 Why Greyhounds are Top Blood Donors Universal Donors: A high percentage of Greyhounds (especially retired racers) are DEA 1.1, 1.2, and 7-negative, making them universal, safe donors for other breeds. High Hematocrit: Their blood is unusually rich in red blood cells, which is ideal for treating conditions like severe anemia or injuries. Physical and Temperament Traits: Their large size (>25kg), calm/gentle temperament, and distinct anatomy (large veins) make the donation process easy. Accessible Population: As retired racers, many are in centralized care or available for donation programs. Reddit +5 Why They Give Blood (Purpose) Saving Lives: One Greyhound donation can save the lives of multiple dogs. Urgent Care: Their blood is used in transfusions for dogs suffering from injuries, rat poison ingestion, or immune-mediated diseases. AKC Canine Health Foundation +2 Quote
the galah Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago (edited) i was reading an interesting article on stuff written by loyd burr about the greyhound industry last month. that may interest some if they haven't already read it. it is going to be very, very sad in so many ways, wether people agree with the decison to stop racing or not. They only have 4 months left to race. sounds like the government will still need to heavily subsidise the greyhounds and their people for caring for thier dogs. But so they should.Calls for other compensation does sound reasonable, but may come to nothing. i guess whatever happens it would be depressing seeing your lifes work taken away from you. AKC Canine Health Foundation +2 Do you ever like… apply critical thinking before you run your mouth, Chief…? Greyhound racing exists in just five counties right now (and on 31 July 2026 that becomes just four!). There are literally tens of thousands of vet clinics all over the world. You’re saying every other country that doesn’t have greyhound racing hasn’t figured out a way to do blood donations so they just let animals die?! If only search engines existed so you could educate yourself instead of embarrassing yourself. http://www.spca.nz/advice-and-welfare/article/when-pets-give-blood-how-aotearoas-animal-blood-donations-compare-with-the-rest-of-the-world Edited 1 hour ago by Seeyounexttuesdaytrainers Quote
