Japan Female Jockeys get Xtra allowance

This is great news in the land of general misogyny...if there ever was one

France tried it and it became a raging success...so much so that they had to reduce the allowance within the first few months

But it had the desired affect...giving more opportunities to the great sex...

Female riders to be given weight allowance in Japan from March

Female riders in Japan will from March command a weight allowance of 2kg (4.4lb) on their mounts, following an announcement from the Japanese Racing Authority.

Currently, Japan operates an apprentice system not dissimilar to that used in Britain. Jockeys who have held a licence for under five years receive an allowance of 3kg (6.6lb) for those with fewer than 30 wins, 2kg for those with 31 to 50 wins and 1kg (2.2lb) for those with 51 to 100 wins.

No rider receives the allowance in Pattern or Listed races, and while female riders will receive the allowance for all of their careers, the same rule will apply and they will be unable to claim their 2kg in such contests.

The announcement comes at a time when 21-year-old Nanako Fujita is breaking new ground for female riders in Japan and is currently the only female jockey attached to the more lucrative JRA (three other female jockeys ride on the lesser National Association of Racing circuit).

Fujita has ridden a total of 63 winners (45 JRA, 18 NAR) since making her debut in 2016, with 25 coming this year, and is already the winningmost female jockey in JRA history, having broken the previous record of 34 held by Yukiko Masuzawa. The famed Hitomi Miyashita rode 815 winners throughout her career, however 759 came in NAR and the rest in Korea.

Thought by many to be a future Grade 1 winner, Fujita is already a popular figure on the JRA circuit, with her calendar and photo book proving big sellers with Japanese racing fans.

In France rides being given to women have more than doubled since authorities there pioneered the weight allowance for female riders in 2017. This year Mickaelle Michel, 22, became the first woman to lead the French jockeys' championship and, at the time of writing, remains in the top ten.

You know Positive Discrimnation works...

The States have it, where less fortunate upbringings produce unequal outcomes...

...through no fault of their making

Imagine being born a woman in China for example...for a start under the one child policy...look out if the parents find you haven't got a swinging item...

..Its instant abort time

That idiot, so called Kiwi, who joined Isis...still claiming he was unfortunate he couldn't afford a woman slave...but he still wants to come home

wtf

Sometimes certain things that need to change are helped by PD..as in this case

Obviously something you never had or you wouldn't post this kind of patronising, extremist, feminist crap as though it were a great idea. Take Dark Beau's advice and go watch a few Jordan Petersen talks or interviews on the topic.

Sometimes the olde world fogies need a wee helping hand to realise females are equally competent...

Imagine if other Equestrian Sports had little female participation...

Jonelle Price strapping for hubby,..because she can't possibly be as good

Like you do in your punting theories, you apply an ideology or theory to a population instead of individuals. Certainly some individual females are equally or more competent than individual males. Many are not, but you want to penalise one population against the other to create equity of outcome as measured by the population average instead of working to create equity of opportunity? That's what the stupid female handicapping allowance tries to do here when it has completely stuffed up the whole handicapping system costing the industry megabucks in punter interest.

This shit does my head in. It's NZTR, Thomass, Newmarket rolled into one.

Yeah, not surprising that you cant see both sides in this.

Not every Country has an even playing field when it comes to racing, NZ was one of the first to support female jockeys to the game. It has taken many years to be looked at as an equal, or in some cases, better than the blokes.

So maybe in other Countries, maybe this is a good idea, might get more female jockeys riding, might pay off. Try keeping an open mind mardi,

So you want to stuff racing due to cultural gender issues? Getting more female jockeys to participate might be a worthwhile idea. This way is not. It is bastardising racing (not to mention an insult to women).

Insult to women? What a load of crap.

You should see it as an opportunity that these girls may not get without these claims, get them racing.

Who knows, if they go real good, no doubt in the coming years, the blokes will moan, claims will go, then its all good. Look ahead, not backwards mardi.

As I said, you like things simple. You'd be in favour of NZTR paying Karaka Millions $1m towards restricted races. Keeps the breeders happy, they keep breeding. Keep them racing. If they go good, the rest will moan, funding will go, then it's all good. Sound familiar?

As per normal, change the subject, now your talking Karaka Millions and breeding?

Not surprised thou, you have probably had a think about it, and now think that giving these girls a chance to get riding, in a country far behind nz for equality, may not be a bad idea after all.

Christ, poor old woman in Saudi are only just learning how to drive? You have no idea, but i suppose if you sit arbing in front of a laptop each day, everythings a little cloudy. Good luck

Nope, the idea is stupid and an insult. You seem to want to use racing as a vehicle to change aspects of a countries behaviour/views. Why not change the behaviour/views at the country level? You're happy to stuff the principles of racing in order to ultimately have no effect on a country's views.

I don't arb. But then, you are so simple, you can't even work that out.

Wow corrupt another thread why don't ya...

"working to create equity" hasn't worked in the Racing Industry around some parts of the World...

Read the results and you'll be relly relly impressed

March 1 marked the first anniversary of the female jockeys' weight allowance in France; Scott Burton examines the state of play and highlights the big winners . . .

Mickaelle Michel continues to lead the jockeys' standings after the first two months of the season, looking down on Maxime Guyon and Christophe Soumillon. Statistics covering the first year of the 2kg (4.4lb) allowance for female jockeys in France underline that opportunities have knocked in the past 12 months, at least on the Flat.

And while France Galop's figures are complete only for the first ten months to December 31, the high-profile success of apprentice Michel – the first woman to top the standings at the Cagnes-sur-Mer winter meeting through January and February – show trainers are taking notice of the new reality.

As of March 1 the allowance has come down for all women by 0.5kg to 1.5kg, leaving a maximum total that can be claimed by a female apprentice at 4kg, instead of 4.5kg.

Headline Figures

Flat (March-December)

  2016 Total 2017 Total Increase
Rides  2,207 4,691 +112%
Wins 130 380 +192%
Places (2nd-5th) 663 1,596 +140%

The stated aims of officials when the allowance was announced were to encourage owners and trainers to use women more frequently and to give them not just more but better opportunities outside of the races in the programme reserved for them.

That second objective has been addressed with the most important increases in both rides and wins coming at meetings designated as premium – that is those run at the major tracks and carrying PMU betting, rather than smaller provincial venues.

The number of winners ridden by female jockeys since March 2017 at premium meetings on the Flat rose from 59 to 279, an increase of 373 per cent.

The changes have been less pronounced over jumps, with a 14 per cent rise in the number of rides, though that did produce 48 winners in contrast to 23 in 2016.

I'm sure it'd even itself relatively quickly anyhow

If the female can ride ok...she'll lose the allowance quick smart..

btw...How many races in France are decided by a lg nk and less...given the well known softer ground there?

I don't know. But I think the ground is pretty soft in the UK and over 20% of their races are won by 0.2L or less. Amazing to think that that many races could be decided by under one rating point less being given to the second placed horse in any of their handicap races - according to you.

Actually - around 37% of handicap races would change as to the winner based on your claims if the handicappers had made just a single point adjustment difference in favour of the second horse. Not to mention all the 3rd,4th,5th placegetters that would win if given a 1.5L leg up.
