The days of trainers using a stocking as togue ties for horses will come to an end at the end of next month.

Racing Australia has quietly introduced a rule banning the use of “nylon stocking and adhesive bandage” for tongue ties.

RA’s Veterinary and Analysts Committee and the Chairman of Stewards Committee combined to propose the rule change.

The RSPCA has voiced its opposition to the use of tongue ties, arguing they cause horses pain, anxiety and distress with difficulty swallowing as well as possible damage to the tongue by restricting blood flow.

The new rules will require trainers to fit a leather strap or rubber band of at least 15mm in width or a Lycra or neoprene tongue tie at least 50mm wide.

The new rule comes into force on April 1.

Warrnambool trainer Daniel Bowman noted there had been no consultation with trainers and jockeys before RA changed the tongue tie rules.

The use of tongue ties is banned altogether in Germany while other jurisdictions restrict the use of the gear during winter months.

Not like racing Australia to slip in a new rule with zero consultation with trainers and jockeys! @RacingAust how many at VAC and COSC have ridden a horse with a leather tongue tie?
