Mikie
TAB in Oz are blaming a power outage affecting their servers I’m no computer geek but don’t Sportsbet use the same servers? They haven’t crashed have they? Mikie
Chief Stipe
Unlikely to be a power outage as whole data centres would be out. If it is and backup power sources have failed then I'd say there'll be some senior managers looking for work. Doubt it would be a China hack. Chief Stipe
Ok just read something about a power surge precipitating the issue. If that was the case and power UPS's couldn't handle smoothing the power then the servers would trip out. The problem then would be a smooth relaunch. That sort of thing is hard to test for and not often given the worst case test. So the servers (they'll be clustered virtual servers) could be trying to do transaction recovery and reconciliation. With a large system that can take a considerable amount of time if it hasn't been designed right.

They have Fixed Odds available. I guess the Bookies have got the old chalk and board out and working overtime. LOL if the tote doesn't come back on they will have nowhere to lay off their liabilities! But haven't all races been delayed today? They decided that yesterday. Today they stated it was a data centre fire and smoke issue. They had rescheduled a complete reboot this morning before racing starts. I'm picking that a close down of the systems was triggered during a high transaction time. When they came back up it was a dirty start up and not everything recovered. Depends on the architecture model they are using. But unplanned close downs during high transaction traffic times are often problematic. Seems they can't make up their mind Chief Their CEO says it was a power surge, another story says it was a fire If it was a fire you would think that they could tell ie there would be flames, smoke and embers Sounds like a complete cockup and no one knows how to cover it up quietly Mikie

Power surge leads to overheating of electrical components generating smoke. Activates fire suppression (masses of a halogen gas released) and systems go into auto turn off. That wind down should be gentle but sometimes not. A good system would have either a hot site back up in another location which would kick in or initiate a cold site to start up. Murphy's Law these things happen on big transaction days!

You are typing way above my knowledge scale when it comes to servers and surges, smoke and mirrors, hot and cold sites, gentle wind downs and halogen gasses I would have thought that any sort of fire would have made the Press Releases pretty clear and not so ambiguous I do note that a Press Release from the Tabcorp CEO states that they are not entirely ruling out being hacked either When will they actually tell us what happened? Chief Stipe
TAB vows there won’t be a repeat of Saturday farce Article Author 7:27PM09 November 2020 Tabcorp will reward loyal punters and has vowed to do what is necessary to ensure there won’t be a repeat of the nationwide betting system meltdown on the weekend. The wagering and gaming giant is conducting a “thorough and urgent investigation” into the computer systems failure last weekend which is estimated to have cost $120 million in betting turnover. “It’s been a very tough weekend for punters, for TAB, for the racing industry and for thousands of retail venues out there across the country that rely on our products,’’ Tabcorp’s managing director of wagering and media, Adam Rytenskild told The Daily Telegraph on Monday. “I can understand the frustrations and I’m very sorry for what has occurred, sorry for our customers especially, and to the racing industry. A closed TAB counter at Flemington during the computer malfunction on Stakes Day. “We will definitely be doing something quite substantial for our customers over the coming days and weeks, we are very focused on that. “(But) at the moment, we just want to make sure our systems are stable and thankfully we are operating across all channels now.’’ It is understood a preliminary assessment indicates a smoke and possible fire incident at a data centre resulted in extensive damage to Tabcorp’s servers and associated infrastructure causing the betting network to shutdown for more than 24 hours. Rytsenkild said the review process will address why TAB’s sophisticated computer back-up systems did not work when the network crashed after just 11am on Saturday. “When we have had incidents like this in the past our systems have gone over to those back-up systems to ensure (network) continuity,’’ he said. The TAB website is seen on a computer with a message saying betting is currently unavailable during the 28-hour crash. “That hasn’t happened in this case, it is an unprecedented situation and we will do whatever is necessary coming out of this review to make sure this doesn’t happen again.’’ Tabcorp has also dismissed continued speculation of a cyber security breach to the betting network. “There is no evidence to suggest we have been hacked at this stage,’’ Rytenskild said. “Customer data is safe and we wanted to make sure that was the case before we brought our systems back up.’’ Tabcorp’s share price fell 12 cents (2.9%) to $3.98 on Monday and was the worst performing stock on the ASX 200 on a day when the market rose 1.8% to an eight-month high at 6298 points.
