Freda
Just how accurate are the timing methods? Yesterday, we had trials at Riccarton. The 800m heats whistled by in 44/45 sec, which is astounding for a bunch of novices. The 1200m lots produced another couple of 1.07 and change efforts, again amazing for trials , while the 1000 m heats came in around 57 sec. Smart, but not outstanding like 1.07. Would I be the only one puzzled at the apparent disparity here? And just to further confuse the matter, I notice that the race times for the 1200m maidens on Friday have been 'modified' up a second on the NZTR website, although the open 1200 time remains the same. Tab website has no change. Edited December 7, 2020 by Freda
curious
I noticed that. And that was on a Dead 4? Must have been a strong norwester tail wind? As someone who relies substantially on times to assess ability it's a bit of a worry. As are the retrospective time adjustments for Friday. Any explanation for that? If they go that quick at Foxton today we'll just be coming round the corner when the winner gets to the post!
Freda
Don't think you'll have a problem on a slow 7.

It must give you night sweats when there's a head/tail wind down the Riccs/Trentham sort of straight?? And they haven't told you what velocity the howler's howling...how do you adjust...or do you just gamble on maidens at Northern courses? How do you sleep in all that perspiration though? I adjust by considering the times they run in light of the times I'd expect them to run without the howler. Still all relative.

So obviously if you stick your finger in the air to 'adjust' you'd also adjust for facing the breeze aka wide without cover...or held up for the entire length of the straight when finishing last in a slow time...right? Ive seen them run 57 at Doomben and E Farm, but they were WFA horses, any jockey who lets a trialer run 1-07 needs sectioning, and a trainer that condones that needs same, not to mention a curator that turns a track out like that, is shit for brains mandatory? it must be.
Tesio
Maybe there was some above average horses there also .... just watched the replays...looks like a couple of sharp ones?
The Centaur
To a degree the recorded video has become the source for times therefore the errors for that type of timing should be examined. e.g. how does the starting point line up and how accurate is video timing versus on the spot real time. A video is never going to be more accurate than 1/25th of a second and even then some frames of the video are duplicates because the computer compiling the video isn't fast enough.
