Ludwig
I am trying to understand, who actually benefits by having no Hawera Easter meetings?
Jonny Longshot
For one thing, the cost of staff (time and a half) being public holidays was deemed prohibitive. Secondly, there are only five on site broadcast units and with Ellerslie, Manukau Dogs, Awapuni, Addington and Riverton today, there's no room for a further race meeting.
eljay
Rubbish, Jonny. Hasn't been a problem in the past so why now. My answer is to simply place no bets over Easter. Just a token reaction.

Today I don't think is holiday ,yesty was and Monday is,tomorrow is a bit of a grey area, maybe the Saturday Monday for Hawera may not be a goer but surely something around this time could be accommodated, racing finished in CD area by April is a wee bit short changing things. Yes they only have 4 outside broadcast trucks, there use to be 6 of them and they have smaller vans for the greyhounds only. 2 in the north island 2 in the south island so they can only service 4 equine codes in a day http://www.content-technology.com/asiapacificnews/?p=20121https://www.tabnz.org/vision-capture-promo-campaign-now-live

So, back to my original question, who benefits? So far, the suits because they haven't got enough trucks. Do any of these groups? ....Drivers, trainers, owners, food, accomodation and other retailers? And the general public in the region...how are they being encouraged to be involved in harness racing? I thought with the new technology and data circuits that the major centres were permanently "wired" so you didn't need a full broadcast truck for those centres only those that didn't have the permanent connections. The production is done from a central facility in swanky Parnell as opposed to a Broadcast truck. If that isn't the case then yet another reason for an investigation into the broadcasting outsource agreements which are costing the industry over $12m a year. Obviously they are not fit for purpose when you look at the needs of NZ racing.
Ludwig
Call me a cynic, but it seems like another excuse to bury harness racing in any area apart from Auckland/Cambridge, Canterbury or Southland.

I think it is worse than that. The Industry is being driven by the needs of the big Thoroughbred Clubs. In my opinion they are nothing more than black holes vacuuming up all the dosh. $16m of tax payer and industry money has gone into building the CJC All Weather Track with no evidence on any thought on how the yearly maintenance and future renovations will be funded. Expect heavy subsidisation from the other codes. The Greyhounds will be the first to go.
Karrots
Just skimmed thru this thread, think it was poster Taku U on here that said on another thread that Hawera is back on, but still to be officially confirmed but in Jan.

The broadcast centre in Auckland is the main control room where they put the program together, add the graphics etc etc plus distribute the feed go Sky/Spark etc for home viewing. You still need a broadcast unit to supply the audio/pictures from the venues. Unlike the greyhounds where they are using remote production over IP/fibre if you read the articles online. All they send is the equipment and a crew and it is mixed/produced from Christchurch from memory and sent to Auckland. And they use Mercedes Sprinter vans (according to the article) Check out the videos in the links + other articles that mention trucks etc. https://www.tabnz.org/vision-capture-promo-campaign-now-live https://www.thebroadcastbridge.com/content/entry/13098/lawos-vsm-broadcast-control-system-key-to-new-zealand-horse-racing https://www.proavl-asia.com/details/63254-sony-is-off-to-the-races-with-nzrb
