Training a Trotter

In Victoria today in 2021, a great ex-pat kiwi trainer is still bringing home a trotting winner .

His son driving a winner for them today as co-trainers,

Can you name this magnificent animal that he won plenty with in NZ , including one of the most Dashing Wins ever seen at Addington in a feature race ever?

Double points if you can get the 2 Aussies who ran second and third in that amazing performance.

Check the whip action on that 2nd horse Alby Logan.

That was tame as!!..... if you want to see some real whip work have a crack at the next Interdominion at Addington after that one. YouTube will show it.

1987 Interdominion at Addington and an Aussie one-two-three in the Pacers Grand- final. My Lightning Blue getting 24 Full-Blooded strikes all the way up the home straight from Jimmy O'Sullivan. You won't see stuff like that again .

Mango getting stuck into Luxury Liner there too. All seems pretty mild these days?

What a good field of open class trotters from yesteryear, still gives one a thrill after seeing a win of that nature, those were the days, even back then they used to race an open class trot  race at greymouth harness.

Geez they'd get a life ban for that carry on these days, also watched the 1995 edition, Chris Alford behind Golden Reign would've been gone too, foot out of the cart down the straight with several haymakers ..... you can understand why things had to change around use of the whip !

Absolutely !! there has been plenty of debate about the 'Whip' use with harness horses and Thoroughbred horses for months/ years now. You can never get the rule 'just right' to suit everyone.

I'm sure those big races last century in history are consigned to that. History. and everyone is glad to see the changes have resulted in a more subdued product. Mick 'the enforcer' Dittman Aus, and Jim 'the pumper' Cassidy wouldn't be able to use their riding style these days.

A great Outcome of this , is the fantastic progress made by the females in racing . Jamie Kah , Danielle Johnson , Natalie Rasmussen and most races are now 'riddled' with the young female jockeys and drivers throughout the harness and galloping races in every state of Aus and NZ, as the Reliance on strong 'standover driving/ riding' is not required or tolerated anymore.

Hey, one bloke slipped up in Tas going back to the 'old ways', and had the race taken off him !!! sign things are still changing for the better. here's the clipping, I'll paste here.

The winner of Tasmania's premier harness race has been disqualified over what has been described as a shocking breach of the rules by the horse's driver. The decision, possibly the first of its kind in Australia, comes almost six weeks after the running of the $75,000 Tasmania Cup in Hobart.21 Apr 2021

Just the trotters Chief. They were only getting 6 horse fields when carded on the programme. Pacers will continue.

Get a load of this!!! . BEN YOLE , the Tasmanian (and Australias most winning trainer because of numbers) he had 51 horses in last Friday in Hobart. !!!!  least amount he had in one race was '4 ' runners (usually 6 to 8 per race ) How sharp would the stewards have to be to look out for 'Team driving ' ???? hehehe lol.....

There was 8 races with a total of 85 starters, so only 34 'rivals' to beat all night lol.... . Ben won 5 races training.

So YOLE  is on 128 season wins from a staggering 1,681 starters since January 1st.

Grant Dixon (here in QLD) is running 2nd with 110 wins from a 1000 starters.  season is exactly 1/2 way through.

Robert and John Dunn in NZ are usually sending around near the most starters for NZ of 600-700 runners per Year, and get about 100 wins per year , every year. They are very reliable and much better strike rate too !! .

If Yole is starting that many in each race though he probably had his 128 wins from starts In about 400 races.

True, they have about 2 meetins a week with 8 races average , so would be around 400 races this year , run in Tasmania.

Interesting Ben Yoles brother Mark (a very good driver) only drives opposition horses currently !! lol. This happens a few times over the years, as they fight like cats and dogs now and then,  Mark drives for a few weeks for Ben, then there's  another fight , and off he goes to drive the opponents horses ...hahaha the cold getting to them maybe?

must be a Tassie thing.? all the fighting.

One night in Oct 2015, at the Tasmanian trotting awards dinner at Wrest Point casino, a few of the Leading Tasmanian harness racing families had a Large Clash in the Car -park , kicking and punching, and a heap of them got disqualified , fined , etc Fords, Hodges, Hilliers hahaha  only in Tassie...... goodness me.

Not happy with who got the Awards  lol.......???  no i don't know the reason for fight , but how stupid is stupid.
