Doomed
So good to see the 3yo taking on the older horses at WFA tomorrow. Long time since I can recall that happening. It should give us a bit of an indication about the relative quality of this season's 3yo crop and the older horses.
Freda
Yes, it will certainly be interesting. That's what WFA is all about, and I think I can recall a 2 yr old also, years ago, competing under those conditions. Might it have been Wood Court Inn, ridden by Noel Eastwood? nod
It was quite common for a 2yo to contest the WFA Challenge stakes At a time when the minimum weight for the Melbourne cup was 6 stone -38kg Noel was in great demand as he could ride at 40kg I laugh when I recall Noel at a party being chatted up by a lady 3 times his size Wood Court Inn was trained by SYD bROWN a great trainer who had horses like Redcraze, Daryls Joy, and Classic Mission. The latter subject to the fly blown countrys underarm allegation that the 3yo was actually a 4yo

Yes, I think the first three home are actually pretty good horses racing in good form so one of the more competitive WFA races in NZ for a while. In Australia it is very common to see the 3yos racing at WFA, but rare here. They either consider there is easy pickings in 3yo company or they just aren't up to WFA. It used to be common for the AJC Derby winner to back up in the Tancred. Bonecrusher probably did it. I seem to recall Double Century won the Derby and then the Sydney Cup. Double Century lost the AJC Derby on protest to Dulcify but won the Sydney Cup in a hand canter and ran second to Kingston Town the following year. A hell of a horse... Double Century.
