Marcelo Cardoso, who suffered two extensive brain bleeds when the horse he was breezing June 12 at the OBS June breeze-up show broke down, has been transferred to the Brooks Rehabilitation Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, where he will undergo intensive physical and speech therapy. His friends are starting a Gofundme account to help defray the expenses of what will be a long, if not a lifetime, recovery. Cardoso, 41, a father of three who had a 12-year career as a jockey, was riding hip number 482, an Upstart filly, when she broke down during her breeze, throwing him heavily to the ground. He was taken to Ocala Regional Hospital, where he underwent surgery for significant brain hemorrhaging. He spent four-and-a-half weeks in a coma from which he has recently begun to emerge, and has been sent to Brooks to try to regain speech and movement. “We are excited to get him there and he is currently in the process of intense physical therapy, and speech therapy,” said veterinarian Lisa Casinella, who is funding the therapy along with her husband, consignor Randy Miles, and Bo Hunt. (Cardoso was not riding for Miles or Hunt at the time of the accident.) “He's doing well. He's able to speak a little bit in both English and Spanish, and he has an ability to eat with his left hand. He has some paralysis of the right side of his body, but he is better than he was two and a half weeks ago.” Cardoso, who started riding in his native Mexico was he was 16, is a longtime member of the Ocala community, in the United States with political asylum. He does not have health insurance. Brooks Rehabilitation is ranked as the top in-patient physical rehabilitation facility in Florida, treating traumatic brain injury, among other things, and helping the patient eventually transition to home. “It is meant to get him assessed, and figure out what kind of physical therapy and then speech therapy he will need going forward,” said Casinella. “And then the rest of this is done at home. He has a wonderful family who is able to care for him.” Right now, the staff at Brooks is working on helping him to walk again. “We hope he regains that, but that is to be determined and as we all know, every brain injury is different,” said Casinella. “There's no one way we write the book on how this is going to go or what time this is going to take or how much of a recovery he will have. At the end of the day, everyone is unique, but we are so encouraged by the progress he's made that we have a lot of hope for him to be able to be functioning again.” Casinella said that Cardoso had an innate love for horses, and frequently worked closely with her from a rider's perspective to help her diagnose her patients. “I've certainly spent a lot of time with him,” said Casinella. “He's helped me with lameness and workups and such. He has a great feel for horses. They love him. He's great at breaking, and is an amazing breeze rider. He really enjoys what he does. We're a long way from saying if he'll ever be able to do it again, but I hope he can because he's passionate about the horses.” She said he was an incredibly hard worker who has always done extra work to care for his children and extended family. “He is very self-motivated,” she said. “He is constantly working after he rides, and is one of those people who is always trying to continue to support his family by doing odd jobs and riding as much as he can. He is always happy and very kind to the horse. That's one of the reasons I enjoy being around him, because he is not using the horse as the end point to a paycheck. He really helps me do my job as far as feedback on what some of these horses are like that I am trying to help and improve, which is pretty unusual for anybody that I work with. I think there is an art to riding these young horses and he just does it with a lot of finesse and a lot of kindness.” For Cardoso, America was a dream, Casinella said. “He had a tough life in Mexico, and his goal was to get out so he could come here and ride,” she said. “He's been riding since he was 16, and he loves it, and that's how he was able to survive and make money. And so he hasn't had it as easy as many people, but that was his dream and he's been able to live it. It hasn't been a straight line, but it has been one whose path is right.” Casinella said that it's hard to determine exactly how much the ongoing therapy would cost, but that it would be substantial. Her goal, she said, was to raise as much money as possible to offset the cost of the rehab. “He's going to need ongoing physical therapy and speech therapy that he will be attending as an outpatient living at home, and that's obviously very expensive, not to mention all the odds and ends that he will need as far as his support with machines, equipment, and whatever it is going to take to get him to live as normal a life as he can.” To donate to Cardoso's Gofundme, click here. Who would have thought 25 years back that full fields for a harness meeting in Southland in the first week of August was for real, racing longer season it's one thing that has been a forward step for some, but remember the weather has been good over Winter, think of the galloping guys who had their first day on Oct 31, last year, they have to be very resilient with all the issues with weather. -
Well they have got enough for Friday night in the end.
