Canadian champion Tyson (by Tapit), purchased for $175,000 by Darryl and Jill Myers when topping the final session of last week's Keeneland November sale, will stand his first season at the couple's Stone Jug Ranch which is a new Thoroughbred operation in Dillsburg, Pennsylvania, the breeders said in a release on Sunday. “We've talked about [standing stallions] in the past,” said the Myers's bloodstock advisor Ed Price. “But things got serious a week or two ago when we saw this horse.” Bred and raced by Hill 'n' Dale Equine and Stretch Run Ventures, Tyson retires as Canada's 2023 Sovereign award-winning older horse. Last year as a 4-year-old, the Josie Carroll trainee went back-to-back at Woodbine by winning the GIII Dominion Day Stakes and GII Seagram Cup Stakes, and then was third in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup at Saratoga. The homebred retires with earnings of $378,548. “He's by a very successful sire of sires, Tapit,” said Price. “It's one of the strongest modern-day female families, with Rags to Riches, Arcangelo. [His third dam, Broodmare of the Year] Better Than Honour was the most expensive broodmare ever sold, at $14 million. “Plus the fact that he had a lot of racing ability, he won four of his first five starts, was a Grade II and Grade III winner, and was third, beaten around three lengths in the Jockey Club Gold Cup. And his foals will be eligible to race in the PA-Sired/PA-Bred Series.” One of 10 Tapit champions (from 175 stakes winners), Tyson is the first foal for Honouring, a Smart Strike winning full-sister to GISW Streaming and SW Treasuring. Another half-sister, Modeling (Tapit), is the dam of Eclipse winner Arcangelo (Arrogate). Honouring's next two foals, both by Tapit, were six-figure sales yearlings at Keeneland. “Tyson will become one of the six new stallions to date for the 2025 Pennsylvania breeding season,” said Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association Executive Secretary Brian Sanfratello. “Thanks goes out to the Myers for their dedication to Pennsylvania breeding with the opening of their new stallion farm. Tyson should fit in very well and I wish Darryl and Jill good luck in their new endeavor.” The Stone Jug addition is expected to arrive at the new stallion farm in a few weeks. A stud fee and terms will be named at a later date. In addition to the above.... racemeetings should also showcase horses for syndication with trainers being in attendance for discussion. This would allow young trainers with limited budget to get involved at lower cost and more transparency to syndicate members. If more of these activities take place on raceday then a scenario of fewer races on the day but more actual racedays is possible. -
andicapper’s Blog 18/11 The New Zealand Cup carnival provides the perfect finale to New Zealand’s spring racing. The 3-day, Group 1 carnival is unique, and fits ideally on the back of Melbourne Cup week. It is a busy racing week, with 9 meetings programmed across the country, and invariably presents numerous re-ratings of interest. We touch on Open race winners below. Feature Open race winner ratings: Bella Waters Gartshore Tauranga Stakes, Group 2, $150k 98 Mehzebeen Martin Collins NZ Cup, Group 3, $400k 97 Kopua TAB Mile, Group 3, $250k 96 Mystic Park Lindauer Stewards, Listed, $140k 95 Bella Waters entered the Tauranga Stakes as a rating 84 horse and risked a large re-rating for a top 4 finish - given she was competing at WFA against a 105-rated horse, Ladie’s Man, and other high-rating horses at the level weights. In winning she beat two rating 98 horses, Pearl Of Alsace and Mali Ston, in a tight finish. Given the narrow margins, and the relative weights, a re-rating to 98 (+14) was appropriate. Any less of a re-rating would have her receiving weight at their next meeting under handicap conditions, which is not equitable. The risk and benefits of running a progressive horse in a race under these conditions is a balancing act. No doubt Cambridge Stud factored these, and the calculated risk has paid dividends with Bella Waters now a Group-2 winning mare. In terms of feedback, Kopua was the most contentious re-rating of the week with his 9-point re-rating for the TAB Mile win. The entry of Perfect Scenario (rating 107) pushed the majority of field to 53kgs and out of the handicap. Kopua was 6 points out of the handicap (ie. In a precise handicap he would have carried 50kgs). To give Kopua a re-rating 6 points or less for the win would see the entire field facing him again at exactly the same weights set-up. Kopua was given 3 points for the win, and 6 points for the out of handicaps adjustment. In simple terms, had the race been run again Kopua would carry 54.5kgs. Mehzebeen and Mystic Park were standard feature race re-ratings of 5 points, given no issues with out of handicap. Previously, Mehzebeen had attracted an 8-point re-rating on Day 1 for an out of the handicap win in the Metropolitan Trophy (Listed). In that race also, Beavertown Boy was re-rated 7 points for his 2nd placing, moving him 1kg below the winner at that point in time. -

Racing is a professional sport. Horses can be likened to players and it would be absurd of professional leagues such as the NFL, NBA etc if they gave away their potential income from player auctions to outside enterprises. Every racemeeting should have time set aside for showing off potential sale horses either just in the parade ring or as a barrier trial. Trackside TV could also broadcast the proceedings therefore the vendor will get far better exposure than currently with NZ Bloodstock. Breeding catalogues can be provided by more than just NZB so they would have to do it at a competitive rate. If clubs thought smart about all the revenue streams they can get into then racing would be in far better position.
