The all weather Polytrack could (and should) have been placed at Rangiora anyway and at a much lessor initial cost. At 1600m and cambered and with 1200m, 1600m and 2000m starting shutes already in place Rangiora was the ideal setup.

NZTR would've initially cleared Pinn to ride in Australia, it's then the Australian stewards responsibility to ensure each horse carries its correct weight. There's no excuse, and there's something radically wrong with the HOF selection process when the two most successful jockeys of all time are overlooked. A New Zealand record 2600 victories is a bigger and better achievement than a Hall of Fame berth anyway in my book. No argument with Bosson, a very good modern-day rider.

And unlikely to be surpassed, a phenomenal achievement from a low populous North Canterbury town and even more phenomenal considering he was eight years out of the game. In his heyday Johnson was without peer and in my view the most gifted jockey to grace the pigskin in the last fifty years here. I certainly rate him a class above every other incumbent Hall of Famer in that time. It's a tragedy that the Johnson of today is now not a shadow of his former self.

With regards the Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes, racing's adjudicating personnel haven't got a clue and this was yet another example of how far out of their depth they actually are. The adjudicating chairperson stated that the runner-up had ample opportunity to go past the winner but couldn't do so which is totally irrelevant when the aggrieved party is forced over extra ground. For the uninitiated and more importantly the half-baked judicial panel, the easiest and most proven way to get a horse beat on a good/firm/easy track is to force it over extra ground, the argument that the winner has also covered extra ground and that the runner-ups jockey never stopped riding is also irrelevant. To retain a Group 1 event after coming down the straight like a drunken turtle and taking out half the field is a travesty.

NZ jockeys have always held their own in Australia and IMO they are better riders than their Australian counterparts on a per capita basis. Outside the main metropolitan tracks Australian jockeys are very poor and even many of their city jockeys lack judgement and patience. As always, the pen is mightier than the sword and it's the half-baked Australian media who have (wrongfully) portrayed NZ jockeys as inferior.
