Well, I'm pleased to report that my group split into two teams and one of them won! Admittedly not the one I was in (as I predicted, we lost the lot, despite utilising Counter Punch's excellent tip!) But reflected glory and all that...?

My 'other team' were 8th going into the last race, but put a $300 place bet on Leading The Way @ 7s and somehow jumped all the way to 1st.  The strategies employed by some of the leading teams seemed a little peculiar...

BTW, where has the public grandstand gone?

Basil what sort of money was the winning score?

Winning score was just over $2600 I think....well done Basil, amazing that a place bet could get you over the line.

I started the day well....in front after 3 races on $970...but then went terrible....until last, I too backed that winner each way, with a % slice of the tri, so Bigalthelegend team of myself, was up a few hundred for the day.

The same that will be facing a number of clubs in the medium term future ... safety (asbestos in the building) and not up to earthquake regulations. It is a huge issue that many of the racetracks will have to confront given the age of some of the facilities.

Stands are out of date.

Need to think outside the square for smaller clubs.

Have shelters and picnic areas for people to enjoy the day rather than a 'stand'

Smaller clubs need to make it attractive for people to come along.

I also agree with Basil....leader had a clear lead, around $3600 mid way thru the day.

Seems rather than let others chase him....he offloaded..maybe a thousand each race??

Yes, this is what I was referring to. Given that the typical winning score (or so we were told) was in the $2000-$3000 range, I'd have thought that the optimal strategy for anybody getting to $3600 by halfway would be to have $50 place bets for the rest of the card (preferably on a scratching!) and let the odds work in your favour. Instead, they seemed to go ballistic. Very generous of them to let the rest of us back into it.?

Of course, I see that one team (not sure if it was the early leader) had six live quaddie chances going into the last race, including Johnnie White. If he'd stuck his nose out a little more, it'd have been all over red rover!

I agree with this at courses like Waikouaiti where there's a natural grass embankment, or even Kaikoura where you can get up on the hill. But on flat courses (which is most of them), it's nice to have the bit of elevation provided by a stand'.

Agreed. Just not a big old stand like the old days. Something like a viewing platform with a roof over it.

Just an idea but something like these. Could work with some seats.

These with a roof.

Yes, something like this could work, although it'd probably need to be on a hill (or at least have an unimpeded view) and there might need to be a couple of them.

As it happens, Methven did have a smaller version of this on the course, but it (i) was in a bad place — past the winning post and (ii) was decidedly flimsy — so much so that when a 20-stoner climbed on, I promptly got off!

The team that had live quads, was not the team in front mid way through the day.

But we did have a chat to the mid way leader after last, didn't seem to concerned.Think he finished up with about $1200
