Ellerslie's racebook on Saturday had a page with all previous winners of Auckland Cup .

The list began in 1972 with South Island mare Sailing Home. The previous year Southern bred Artifice ridden by EJ Didham[Otago] had won.

Can't Southerners run 3200m now ?

Or do they just don't try..that for other folk .

In 1965 a horse called Lucky Son had won the Cup....At end of 3yr old season his Otago owner/trainer sent him North to be trained by top jockey WD Skelton [Levin]

Bustling Bill at that stage trained just the one horse , Lucky Son.

His Owner Jim Brown was a brother of Joe Brown who had O/T the Wellington Cup winner and 3rd in Melbourne Cup Reformed ,a few years earlier.

Joe ran the Dunedin Town Hall Dance , Miss NZ and managed musicians like John Hore, Eddie Low , Howard Morrison etc.

Jim's son Syd , preferred Harness having some top liners like Fieldmaster and Foreal.

Syd's horse won the first race at Auckland on Friday night with a horse called Skipper.

Sea swift, samasan, ed, and sounderation, a few 2 miles to win a cups race from the south, sea swift maybe the only one to win an Auckland Cup, not many true two milers in nz anymore, the races are just a glorified hack race, when you look at the fields, most of the field struggled to run the 3200m race, the time very slow 3.24, the appeal of the stayers not the same these days, most want to get to the races as soon as they can, and target the classic races, lots of time and effort goes into a stayer, I don't think most have the patience, sea swift went around 3.15 or so, when in the last ten years has anyone gone close to that time, or are our tracks slower.

Sadly, yes, most 'staying' races have become very pedestrian affairs.

Structure and programming have to be a part of this; not the sole reason, there are several factors, but it seems that, as you say, very few relish the time and money that must be spent to develop such horses.

Been some great stayers come out of the South Island… ED was my fav.

No money in stayers in NZ, sadly jumping races will be a thing of the past soon
