Newmarket
Now, i know everyone on here will disagree with me, but come on, remember when we were all kids, the thrill of guy fawkes, letting a few off. I know, people with horses and pets, i understand that. But horses get spooked by lightning, thunder, wind and everthing else everyday, thats just part of it. So dont ban, but only allow small fireworks into the country, those that a family can have a bit of fun with, but dont sound like world war 2 is on again. Keep large public displays, but the hoods that do the crazy shit with the boom box you seen now, wont find it cool to let off the little ones.
Freda
Nope. Sorry, disagree...keep public displays but ban over-the-counter sales for the use of fkwits.
barryb
I am not into banning anything, but the time for this must be near an end. I have had a horse injured from Fireworks and its like a lot of things, its the f--kwits letting them off thats the issue. If you live on a lifestyle block or a farm then logic says DON'T Farking do it, but I am afraid the average Kiwi today is a dumb farker and selfishly thinks of his own pleasure and not the risk faced to others. I said to my family do you want Fireworks this yr?, normally I buy far too much and its me alone outside still letting them off when everyone else has gone inside bored. The Mrs normally says get a small amount, her def of small is not the same as mine, hahaha. 1

Maybe if you asked every kiwi, more would vote to ban horse racing than fireworks? 1
jess
Sorry NM - I am ruled by my self-interest on this one. I hate the darned things and would gladly see them gone. I have wonderful neighbors who "get it" and pretty much due to a couple of us who have horses - the whole lot of us don't indulge. I am very grateful for their consideration. My sister is not as lucky - has rural neighbors with townie ways - they go nuts with pyrotechnics every year and it is a nightmare for her. I know I sound like the fun-Police but just because horses get spooked by lots of other things it doesn't mean adding a once-a-year, guaranteed dead-set-scare-the-living-daylights-outta-them occasion is a good idea. I have a horse who initially hated the local topdressing pilot's low passes and the neighbor's chainsaw. Clearly those things rightfully continued and I worked through it with my big 16.2hh scaredy-cat who is now wary rather than panicked by those stimuli. Fireworks are a bridge too far. Yep, i see your point Jess, and i knew that i would be in the minority. But lets face it, guy fawkes have been celebrated for ever in nz. Seems recent years, it is just easier to ban things. Even in chch, they want to get rid of E scooters?? Maybe we need to ban xmas, busiest time of the year for hospital staff, most acc claims, domestic violence. FeelTheFear
Keep large displays but ban rest. Too many scared animals/pets and also fires. Perhaps councils could subsidise the displays so that it is cheap for families to go. The offset against costs associated with fires, injuries would be a positive I would think. Also brings the community together.

Actually it didn't start like that at all, but no worries, ds In regards to the Melbourne Cup thread, lots of people have read it, they are merely my thoughts on THE BIGGEST HORSE RACE in the SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE ... I doubt you have any useful input.

The possibility is endless if the bullshit talked about banning fireworks gets any traction, loons like Thomass will be banned from shagging inflatable dolls next.
barryb
Didn’t take long did it, check out stuff tonight regarding Greyhound Racing. There days are numbered, won’t be around in 2 yrs is my guess. Throughbreds will be next, those wishing for fireworks to be banned be bloody careful what you wish for, loons are everywhere in society, Thomass is a clear example of it.

barryb
Nope quite the opposite, re-read my post. Theres a point in anything where a lines crossed and you need to ask is it worth sacrificing basic rights to contain a few idiots, idiot numbers are increasing in our society as idiots are allowed unabated breeding . Look at this forum and our mentally ill representative in the community (Thomass) whom is harmless enough until technology allows inflatable dolls to bear children. NZ greyhound demise may accelerate the demise of NZ gallops, some of it for the same reasons and some of it due to greyhounds helping support NZ gallops. What will be the stance of NZRB? Will they continue to offer betting on greyhounds or would that be considered unethical if NZ had taken a stance to ban greyhounds? Greyhound punters may simply shift to a different provider.
