hesi
Racing industry Ministerial Advisory Committee established The Office of Minister for Racing 13 December 2018 Racing Minister Winston Peters has announced a five-member Ministerial Advisory Committee to inform next steps on the Messara Review of the New Zealand Racing Industry. “This government is committed to reforming the racing industry. The Ministerial Advisory Group will develop a plan to operationalise the Messara Report to deliver better governance and economic outcomes,” said Mr Peters. “The five people appointed to the Ministerial Advisory Committee bring their personal expertise and ability to provide independent, strategic assessments of the business change proposals for the racing industry. Between them they have experience across the three racing industry codes,” he said. Mr Peters has appointed Dean McKenzie as Chair. Mr McKenzie is an experienced racing administrator whose dedication and passion to improving the industry make him the ideal choice to lead this very important work. He will be well-supported by Committee members Bill Birnie, Liz Dawson, Kristy McDonald and Sir Peter Vela. “Collectively, they will identify the technical, legal, financial and process-oriented decision points for racing reform and return the industry to a well-managed and sustainable economic growth path. They will also take into account the feedback received during the public submission process.” said Mr Peters The Committee will provide an interim report to the Minister for Racing by the end of February 2019, to be followed by Cabinet decisions, and legislation to modernise the industry. The Committee is being created as a potential precursor to the establishment of a Racing Industry Transitional Agency (RITA), subject to future government decisions Edited December 13, 2018 by hesi
mardigras
What makes him think they will act 'independent'.
The Diceman's Been
Deano - Tick Liz Dawson - Has a track record in sports administration, some of which have failed spectacularly (Adelaide Rams comes to mind) Sir Pete was 100/1 on to be included as he and Whisky Winn are joined at the hip. Independent ????? Absolutely and pigs can fly don't you know. Bill Birnie - Billy boy is more at home as a male ballet dancer that a TAB user. I doubt he has ever had a bet in his life. Kiwifruit Kristy has the legal smarts - I'll give her a tick Deano, it will be like herding cats. good luck
Weasel
Can anyone explain why it has taken months for this BIG MAC to be announced? Why didn't Winnie announce the formation of said MAC soon after the announcement of the Messara Report? Their mandate could easily have included the coordination of 'feedback' from the consultation with stakeholders in the industry...and they'd have been months further head in their planning by now.. Amazing that they are required to present an interim report by the end of Feb 2019 - how much they gonna get done between now and mid-Jan? Stuff all, I'd say ... so they'll have about 6 weeks to "identify the technical, legal, financial and process-oriented decision points for racing reform and return the industry to a well-managed and sustainable economic growth path." Big job, that...Merry Christmas to the Famous Five

Shows you how dumb they all are by thinking that everyone would just lie down and be walked all over "for the sake of the industry".
Kopia
I dont see anyone from the 'coalface' of racing. Someone who actually physically works in the industry. Can't tell me there aren't any. This woman macdonald was sucking $250,000 per year out of the j.c.a. when she was the chairlady of it..for doing sweet f.a. So this 'committee' is more of the same. Political bullshit.
hesi
Peters clearly wants/needs a slick legal mind on the committee to handle the biggest issue, that being the amending of legislation to allow assets and land to be transferred to the national body. This is obviously going to be challenged, by Avondale in particular. If speculative development prices are to be believed, then that land is worth 200 million. That in itself is enough to cover the whole infrastructure budget of 190 million. If you were Avondale, would you challenge it, of course you would, or at least demand a pretty big pound of flesh to go along with it. Weasel
Personally, I wouldnt be appointing to a Ministerial Advisory Board a person who left multi-million dollars debts six years ago.
