Colin Wightman obviously has seen the risk and gone for the insurance. However its taken away a bit of the underdog emotion for Saturday's race.

That's being smart.  As I said in an earlier post (which was derided by some) Wightman wins both ways.  However it seems it is easy to switch lanes and swim with the whales!

I guess that is one of the intrigues of these slot races - the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing.  But it isn't transparent so doesn't really add anything other than giving the impression there is a small number of wealthy people playing poker.

Remember when the offers for Imperatriz to run in The Everest were rumoured?  The deal that was turned down didn't weigh up with the potential return from a broodmare sale.  Those offering a slot wanted to buy her and share the a small part of the winnings.

I firmly believe, with her racing pattern, racing at The Valley would be perfect. She wouldn't give them a chance to run her down, and it always favors on-pace runners that can sustain a high cruising speed. Her worst track would surely be down the Flemington straight, where she won't have a tight turn to hug the rail and kick clear.

I reckon the Ellerslie track will be her undoing.  Are the track gallops tomorrow or has she had hers?

AS I pointed out previously there is a risk Pivotel Ten could flop in Satuday's race. Its all very well getting carried away with the South Island wins but none of the horses PT has beaten have done much. Only 3 have ever won more than 1 race. In the races PT has won none of the second placed horses have even subsequently placed.

There can be no more softer experience for a horse of PT style of racing than running around Gore or even Invercargill. Colin Wightman obviously has seen the risk and gone for the insurance. However its taken away a bit of the underdog emotion for Saturday's race.

Loose Sally did follow up a placing behind Pivotal Ten in the listed fillies race at Wingatui with a win in the listed Dunedin Guineas at its very next start. Won easily too. So that does stamp the form a bit. And there a couple of northern filles with a bit of a wrap on them in the Dunedin Guineas and they failed to feature.

I think any public interest in the race revolves totally around the three Aussies and the southerner. Without them it would have taken an incredible PR create effort to create any excitement around the race, other than by harping on about the stake.

And everyone seems to conveniently forget that the owners of the slot winner will most likely go away with less money than the owners of the Derby winner. Unless the slot holder owns the horse outright, then they might do slightly better than the Derby winner, minus the Group status. An awful lot of the total stake is paid out to the also rans, back to $100,000 for last.

But there was always going to be some decent OZ TRAINED horses (still NZ bred) in the race.

Another twist, 'their' Jockey rides! :)

Where did you hear/see that?

Wynne and Pivotal Ten hoping to take winning form into NZB Kiwi

Media Release - Monday March 3
......... Wynne will don Cambridge Stud’s familiar colours when she rides Pivotal Ten in the southern hemisphere’s richest three-year-old race, after they recently bought into the filly, with Colin Wightman remaining in the ownership.

“It (Cambridge Stud ownership) was a confidence boost going into this week, which was needed,” Wynne said.

Do you think it will be a good or bad thing going forward if the Aussies dominate the race?

Does it matter?  If NZ Trainers need to lift their game so be it. The OZ trained horses are NZ bred.  Just as was the Quinella in the OZ Guineas last Saturday.
