Lovely gentleman - had the pleasure of being John's guest at Trentham on Steeplechase day over the last few years - huge fun, huge intellect, hundreds of genuine friends.

Some years back  I asked John how he was doing. He replied, "Okay from the neck up." Later I asked him what I should do. He fired back, "Stick to your guns, deny, deny, and shut up." He described himself as, "Non-conciliatory, non-compromising and argumentative by nature." That was his persona. In reality he sought solutions. There was no better bloke to have in your corner when things got tough.

I met him a couple of times through another character of the bar (both legal and public).  Both loved their race horses and were equally colourful.  Sadly it seems we don't have a place for those characters anymore.

I remember fondly providing Rumpoles avatar on another channel.

He certainly lived life.  RIP

Been in THE box at Trentham for the Winter carnival a number of times with various characters, including Rumpole, always a great day.   ?
