When France was liberated and once the initial euphoria was over, things turned very nasty. The people knew who all the collaborators were and they were swiftly dealt with. Heads shaved, tar and feathering and their own punishments meted out. De Gaulle came in with a strong hand or France would have descended into anarchy. Not a pleasant time to be around Quote
