Guest CrossCodes
When you look at the time that this race was run in today you have to seriously consider the ability of the jockeys who ride in behind, nearly 2 seconds slower than the other mile races run, everyone clearly thought they could just sit and sprint, including the favourite who was never given a chance. Guest CrossCodes
Actually was over 2 seconds slower than the other mile races won. Quick Thinker 1.37.44 Tightlign 1.34.63 Endless Drama 1.33.45 Incantessimo 1.35.07 The variance in all the times just shows the inability of kiwi jockeys to ride to a decent pace, it’s all just down to a few riders as to who sets a decent pace or not. Newmarket
Yeah, no wonder we have so much interference, falls etc. Chimp jockeys get the front, ease the pace quick, dangerous.
Freda
Been happening for years, guys....I had a Guineas runner brought down and hurt by the abrupt easing of the pace from the leader. Nothing was done then either despite such tactics being 'against the rules' . Until the feds start stamping on the practice, it will carry on...and the few - very few - riders who can judge speed will win more than their share of races. The U.K practice of 'pacemakers' is not such a bad option IMO. Edited April 20, 2019 by Freda
Weasel
Has anyone considered that these are babies running 1600m for the first time? Not many 2yos are going to go at a strong clip and then sprint hard for 300m, so there's quite an incentive for the 'sit and sprint' option in this case. I'd be quite happy for the race to be over 1400m not 1600m (despite its history), making it the upper North Island equivalent to the Sires in the CD. Imagine if they invested some $$ in it and had an autumn version of the Karaka Million (even if it were worth half a million!) I thought the field yesterday was distinctly average, small field, a poor betting race and therefore a big yawn.

And that's the point, most of theses 2yos had never raced past 1200m and asked to step straight up to 1600m for the first time. Hence you weren't going to get a solid tempo and it ended up a sprint home.
Freda
I disagree. It is a race, after all. Point taken about the babies being, well, babies...but if the mile wasn't suitable, or too tough, why enter? The fact of being the 'first time over 1600 ' means that there is all the more likelihood of someone going out pretty smartly I should have thought. A worthy winnner, regardless, IMO. Weasel
I'm not disrespecting the winner, you can only beat what else lines up, BUT...I think the 'powers that be' should relook where this race sits in the overall pattern for 2yos... it would in my view be much better as a Gp 2 or even Gp 1 1400m race. Keep it at 1600m if they must but for goodness' sake elevate its stake/status so its attractive to some of the best 2yos in the land. As an aside, Castalvecchio won the Champagne Stakes at Randwick yesterday, also over 1600m ona Good track...but he ran over 4 seconds faster ..what's that, about 15-20L? Freda
Can't answer that, and hard to compare on different tracks...but agree re. status. In Japan, and Europe, 2 year olds have the opportunity to compete over 1800. - and further I think.
Fred
Yes Freda, 2000m not uncommon. Musty -imo times are best ignored because there is no way you can compare track conditions or track configuration -in your comparison that Dundeal pony would have blitzed our Easter field.
