Trotter of Year - Who will take the trophy?

Karrots

Recommended Posts

Not long ago, heard on Box-seat or maybe read somewhere, that 1 of the owners of Majestic M rang Williamson while he in quarantine, to ask him if he thought the horse after Oz campaign could win Trotter of The Year.

Thinking after the most recent BIG trot race, it could actually be a bit more open now. Had just thought Sundees Son would take it.

Of course the key to the answer is in the future, with still a BIG trot race or 2 to go.

Thoughts?

Think Sundees Son is Shoo-in already Karrots , and you are on the money.

You win the big 3 x NZ Group 1's and you 'are the best'. Sundee's Son already taken home the Dominion Hcp in Nov, and the National Trot on New-years eve. Just needs the Rowe Cup to complete the set for a grand slam !!

p.s. Sundees Son is already the current Rowe Cup champion , having won it when race last run 2019.

You beauty MM is back, 4 genuine winning chances if they all accept I reckon.... If any of the lads in the syndicate are around no trials or workouts for MM and hasn't raced for 6 weeks since AUS did he go home to Oamaru or has he been with Tony H in Auckland?

Cheers.

Drawn 1 - this gets interesting

This draw is going to make for a fantastic race! Because will MM lead and how much pressure from B4B and SS. Hopefully OB is better and he will just sit in the trail.

Race on! 😄😄😄

Will MM have a regrown scene of confidence after his Oz trip?

Has Oscar improved after his 2 recent runs?

Is Sundees back to his brilliant best?

How about the magical 4y-o Jewels colours wearer for race B4B, how will he go?

And lets not forget Temporale who downed B4B not long ago.

Be an exciting race to watch.

Good luck all!

Oscar will be improved but will probably need more runs yet to be at his best. He hadn't raced for 12 months before resuming two starts ago.

Sundee's Son would be my pick but I'm no expert when it comes to Alexandra Park. 😄

Yeah I don't know, think all runners in race have a chance - gotta be in it to win it. Im looking forward to see how MM goes, if he reverses the result on Sundees Son this time. Sundees seems slightly down on his best. And MM may have come back with a bounce in his step. But I'm no expert either. MM has the drop on them with the draw & If he wins, just IF ... then maybe  I re-ask the original thread question ... BUT best of all

We can all root for our favourites 😁

Sundees Son probably got the worst draw for himself, but still extremely hard to see him not win unless there is driving to keep him on markers if he isn't quick enough from #1

Whoever invented a FFA stand ? goodness me . the current Rowe Cup holder SSon should be off 10 metres surely? .

Plenty of great trotters have had to come around the whole field to 'Prove' their greatness over the years in this great race over 2 miles , with a fair handicap after prior big results.

Having won the Dominion and the last Rowe Cup SS should be on 20m behind IMO

Just a near gift off the front for Sundee'sSon. Weak as piss handicappers these days!!!!!  lol......

Agree it's the worst possible draw he could have.He will get crossed  by a few and i have mapped him potentially 4 back and will need alot of luck or a superb drive .As the commentator will probably say,he may be all dressed up with nowhere to go

A horse draws one and everyone is getting it beaten ?? Crikey if he can't win from there doesn't deserve it.

Vinny couldn't win from 1 alley with Popular Alm either at Auckland. hehehe

Lyell Creek won 2 of his 3 Rowe Cups off 15m ? bit harder than drawing One alley lol. The great Aussie La Coocharacha won off 15m 2002 same as Lyell Creek the 2 previous years, looping the field half-way to grind Take A Moment (who won 2003 Rowe Cup the following year also off 15m!!) into the ground in a spectacular staying effort.

The great Handicap now for Sook's only and grizzling because they drew 1. hahahaha

I disagree about it being harder to win from 15m than drawing 1 from a stand.Sundees Son is a work around the field sort of a horse not get a cost run on the fence and hope for a gap.If SS was off 15m he would be 1.90 shot but with a few great beginners outside him I would have him a 3.20 shot.Best horse in the race but one of slowest beginners.May still win but a non betting race for me at this stage

You're a hard man. trot 4.06 off the front , or come around the field from 15m having to trot 4.04.6 covering extra ground as well. Know which one I'd rather be doing and have anyway. wink.

Must say it was a Stonking Win by Sundee's Son in the last Rowe Cup. He started Unruly position and would of been 20m behind Pole marker then anyway. and settled 30m from lead. looped to get lead at bell, and won under a hold.

He's a superstar.

Pole position not ideal for him but I think he will still win. Those drawn outside him can be tardy from a stand,  Temporale, One Apollo (very iffy from a stand but can make a flyer when in the mood)  and Anditover. Let's face it, the field is not that strong OB, MM and BfB only horses in field that are close to Sundees Son in ability. He should get a good run and the gaps will open up during the 3200m. He will get a cosy run close to the pace and bolt in again.

Like you, I won't bet but looking forward to watching the race.

Go Sundee's Son!

One of the best Rowe Cups I have seen was won by Yankee Loch trained and driven by master trainer/driver Jack Carmichael. I was oncourse that night on a rare trip to Auckland. The race was memorable because Yankee Loch could be very fractious at the start. Since taking over the horses' training Carmichael had improved him in this regard, but that night he really played up. He wouldn't line up, rearing and backing away from the tape and caused a false start. But on the second go he was on his best behaviour and made a flyer, led all the way and bolted in. Yes, I backed him.🙃

My first Rowe Cup live, was "No Response" off 10m 1981. He also won the Interdominion trot in blistering fashion for Richard Brosnan (now in Vic) in the most thrilling win I can remember at Addington in 1979 , storming home from near last turning for home to beat the 2 Aussies in front of the huge NZ crowd. amazing.

A good friend of mine won the Interdominion trot Final with one of your fav's "Yankee Loch" too ! Jimmy O'Sullivan driving him to victory at Moonie Valley in 1989 for Jack Carmichael. Alas I didn't back him and missed out, but hope you were on. !

Was watching the 2018 replays Jewels looking for a fun pre-bonus Jewels questions & stumbled across the 3y-os trotters.

Incidentally noticed M Man and Sundees Sun didn't feature in the top 4 & neither did O. B who was in 2 y-o Jewels.

Now fast forward approx 2 years and they are at the TOP of the open class ranks. The ranks have changed guard.

The 2018 Jewels winners were Winterfell 3 y-o and Enhance Your Calm 2y-o.

Matty Williamson should have stayed on O.B after his sale just before the jewels. Knew the horse, was only with Purdon/Rasmussen for a week

As he proved again last night. There have been quite a few very good NZ trotters since Lyell Creek — Monbet, Stig, Icandoosit and Take A Moment come immediately to mind — but Sundee's Son would have to be right up there with them.
