Chief Stipe
My Dad talked incessantly about the beauty of the "three-legged" pacer. I got to see one win the NZ Trotting Cup in 1974 - Robalan. I then realised Dad was actually saying FREE legged i.e. NO hobbles! 3

We had McShane on course that day. I sat in the Trainers stand to watch the race. They all had stopwatches and were speechless after the race - a world record. They couldn't believe the time he had run. The previous week the crowd were throwing cans at him but that night they were at least 7 deep around the birdcage cheering! We popped into the Drivers room on our way back to the stables and saw Jack Smolenski sitting down looking stuffed - he had blood on his silks that was how bad Lord Module's quarter cracks were. 1

Yes it was a World Record that night , to Lord Module. What an amazing animal he was. The Gammalite of NZ really ! Quite a brutal stallion though. Cecil trained him with 'Chains' at one part of it. He didn't play the game at times. Cecil was from Tasmania like myself, my grandfather drove against him down there near on a century ago. He had to leave Tasmania for some funny reasons and went to Canterbury , where it took him a few seasons to get established. Eventually winning NZ Cups with THUNDER and FALSE STEP to be an icon of the sport.
