Now there is a minimum requirement of 25 trials. An improvement I guess.
Joe Bloggs
I had 15 rides [I think] before being allowed to carry a whip, and to ride a 2yo, but that was when racing was run by real racing people....real, real etc etc.
Joe Bloggs
Oh and NO matinee [barrier trials] either, if BF Deacon said you were ready to ride in races, you were. How many BF Deacon's are there out there now though.

Still not enough , look what young ones have to go through to get a drivers license . They wouldn't be allowed on the road after a few spins around the block in a car . I wrote this earlier today , just watched R Elliot make a decision to ease Marscapone 3 back on the rail in the Sweynesse Stakes , jumped from 1 , jumped first but allowed 2 to cross him , could have quite easily held the trail but made a decision not to , cost him the race , a 2.10 fav , he would have his arse dragged into the stipes in Aus and asked to explain himself , be interesting to see if they question his decision not hold a better position , Punters deserve better . 2

Wondered how long before this came up. It was a shocker.

May not have been an official requirement regarding number of trial rides but there was an expectation that young riders were as well educated as the horses before they went to race day and 60/70 wouldn't have been considered excessive . I have seen some apprentices in recent years that have gone to the races after 6 months of riding track and a little over 20 or so trial and jumpout rides , with your experience how many jockeys have you known that were good enough to go race riding with that amount of experience . i know the riding ranks are thin and kids are in a hurry to do everything , but looking at the standard now , for me 1/2 of apprentices shouldn't be riding .
Freda
And, 40+ years ago trainers educated their own apprentices, ok not all were good teachers but at least most if not all had race ridden.

I think you were a lot different to Taranaki back then, the first barrier trials I rode in were at Fielding when I transferred my apprenticeship to Jim Didham......he'd saddle them up, bring them up to the mounting yard, I'd ride em, he'd have another one ready...we trialed about 9 I think, I lost count of how many won...Holiday Wynn, Four Leaf, Hyperbole, were winners and the only ones I remember......and they all came to Australia and won, Four Leaf should have won the Melbourne Cup he was slaughtered by Midge and Jim never spoke to him for ages....he won the CB Fisher plate [Now the Sundown Classic] at his next start with Wayne Trealor on.......I can remember all this years ago but can't remember what I had for dinner last night...FFS. 2
