Yankiwi
As a countermeasure against recent greyhound racing media reports, depicted here is an image of GRNZ's media manager measuring track moisture content for greyhound safety. Rest assured, GRNZ is all over this one. 1
BitofaLegend
24 dogs in 6 months is not too much. NZGRA should have gone in their and backed these findings. Certainly doesnt correspond with the number they were using a few years ago. instead, the nzgra let them do this willy nilly without any back bone what so ever. I have always said however that their should be a fund in place so that these dogs can be saved when they hurt themselves. Even if its $50 or $100 a race so that these dogs are saved. Fully agree... They should have openly accepted those numbers and then put the numbers into context. 24 dogs in 6 months... How many races in those 6 months? How many starters in those races in the 6 months that were not put down? How many dogs (predominantly non-greyhound) have been put down by the SPCA in those 6 months? Local counsels? How many family pets have been killed crossing the street by cars? How many HUMAN fatalities from traffic accidents in those same 6 months? Play the game the anti's play.. deflection... Yankiwi
This won't help from last night... GOTCHA MAJENTA in race 6 began awkwardly and ran with a very awkward action until making contact with the rail and falling before the first turn. In the opinion of the Vet, she had suffered a severe leg injury soon after leaving the boxes and was euthanased. https://www.grnz.co.nz/catch-the-action/13131/stewards-report.aspx I won't post a link to the video, but is being available on the GRNZ website a good idea? I think people who be stunned if they knew the numbers of dogs were regularly put down in the pounds. And that's the number of reported. I think we have to be careful not to underplay the sentiment and as always put a positive focus on animal welfare but there has to be some valid comparisons for the public to get a balanced perspective. Dazzer
Here's just a couple of links https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11425504 https://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503438&objectid=11236942 It's not scientific but on the basis of the above 1000s of dogs are euthanised each and every year. Using the logic the anti greys brigade apply, people should be banned from having domestic dogs due to the number of dogs put down
