Chief Stipe
I remember about 27 years ago in a bar in Christchurch talking to a pretty young woman (I was a handsome young man then) who said her new job was working for the Met Club and HRNZ as a Marketing person. So having an interest in Harness Racing I promptly took the opportunity to give her some ideas. Always good when chatting a bird up to focus on their job and passion. So you could say I was knocking two birds off with one idea. Anyway my suggestion was that Addington should have a series where there were races that were just over one lap in distance aimed at lower class horses. 3 heats on the night 20 mins apart with a final the last race. First 3 horses from each heat going to the final. A bit harder then to organise the TAB but today it is so much easier. Benefits: Kicks a nights racing off with a kick fire punting splurge - so attracts interest; Provides an opportunity for horses in the lower grades that are never going to make it at the top but those that can sprint over a shorter distance. Keep horses racing longer and owners with a chance to get some coin back; Provides a lot of new novel betting opportunities - e.g. pick the first 3 winners and the final (before it is declared); Maintains interest throughout the programme. 1
